Painful Cutaneous Syncytial Myoepithelioma: From Nonspecific Symptoms to Histopathologic Diagnosis
2020
Contracting striated muscle fibres differentiated from primary rat pituitary cultures.
1982
Whole pituitaries or adenohypophyses alone of adult female Wistar/ Furth rats were dissociated into single cells by means of two different enzymic disintegration methods. The single-cell suspension was then seeded out and cultured for up to 8 months in tissue culture dishes with untreated and polylysine coated surfaces. The cells were cultured in different sera (horse serum, newborn-calf serum, fetal-calf serum, mixtures of horse and newborn-calf serum, and isogenic rat serum) and also in a serum-free, hormone-supplemented medium. When the cells were cultured in medium containing horse serum (15 %) plus fetal-calf serum (3%) on polylysine-treated surfaces, cell fusion and the development of…

Core Content for Undergraduate Medical Education in Spain: Recommendations of the Instructors’ Group of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venere…
2014
Abstract Background Skin problems are among the most frequent reasons for seeking medical attention in primary care. In recent years, as a result of the process of adapting medical curricula to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area, the amount of time students spend learning the concepts of dermatology has been reduced in many universities. Material and methods In order to reach a consensus on core content for undergraduate education in dermatology, we sent a survey to the 57 members of the instructors’ group of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), asking their opinions on what objectives should be set for a dermatology course in Spain. A total of 131 …

Extrafacial Lentigo Maligna: A Report on 14 Cases and a Review of the Literature
2016
Lentigo maligna is the most common form of in situ melanoma. It is most often found on the head and neck, and its clinical and dermoscopic features in this location have been extensively described in the literature. We present a series of 14 patients diagnosed with extrafacial lentigo maligna and lentigo maligna melanoma at Hospital General de Valencia and Hospital de Manacor in Spain, and describe the clinical, dermoscopic, and histologic features observed. Most of the melanomas were located on the upper limbs; the next most common locations were the trunk and the lower limbs. The dermoscopic patterns were consistent with facial lentigo maligna and superficial spreading melanoma. Extrafaci…
Strategies for identifying dysplasia in Barrett's oesophagus
2012
Abstract Early neoplastic changes in Barrett's oesophagus are often only recognizable visually as discrete mucosal irregularities. With timely diagnosis, the prognosis is excellent, in contrast to advanced tumours in Barrett's oesophagus. The international specialist societies therefore recommend regular endoscopic surveillance for patients who have been diagnosed with Barrett's oesophagus. Following the 1993 Seattle Protocol, the various guidelines consistently require four-quadrant biopsy sampling every 1–2 cm over the entire Barrett's segment and additional biopsies from visually suspicious-appearing areas. This approach is time-consuming and costly, and inevitably involves sampling erro…

Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Benzocaine: The Importance of Concomitant Positive Patch Test Results
2013
Local anesthetics are widely used in clinical practice, and adverse effects are not uncommon. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions are among the most common effects, but immediate-type reactions may also occur. Patch testing should be considered in patients with hypersensitivity reactions. We present a case of allergic contact dermatitis to benzocaine that was detected incidentally by patch testing and highlight the importance of correctly interpreting patch test results when there are concomitant positive reactions.
