Water maze performance, exploratory activity, inhibitory avoidance and hippocampal plasticity in aged superior and inferior learners

In 28- to 30-month-old rats, in vitro short-term and long-term potentiation (STP and LTP) were measured in area CA1 of the hippocampus in seven superior and seven inferior learners, that were selected from a pool of 40 rats based on water maze escape performance over a period of 9 days. The aim was to examine whether levels of STP and LTP could account for group differences in learning of water maze escape, spatial preference and wall (thigmotaxis)-avoidance and in short-term retention of an inhibitory avoidance task. Characterization of choline efflux from the perfused heart at rest and after muscarine receptor activation.

The resting efflux of choline from perfused chicken hearts varied from 0.4 to 2.6 nmol/g min, but was constant for at least 80 min in the individual experiments. The rate of choline efflux was found to be equal to the rate of choline formation in the heart, which, from the following reasons, was essentially due to hydrolysis of choline phospholipids. Cardiac content of choline phospholipids (7,200 nmol/g) was much higher than that of acetylcholine (5.5 nmol/g). Resting release of acetylcholine was 0.016 nmol/g min and, after inhibition of cholinesterase, only about 0.1 nmol/g min. Selected peptides targeted to the NMDA receptor channel protect neurons from excitotoxic death

Excitotoxic neuronal death, associated with neurodegeneration and stroke, is triggered primarily by massive Ca2+ influx arising from overactivation of glutamate receptor channels of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype. To search for channel blockers, synthetic combinatorial libraries were assayed for block of agonist-evoked currents by the human NR1-NR2A NMDA receptor subunits expressed in amphibian oocytes. A set of arginine-rich hexapeptides selectively blocked the NMDA receptor channel with IC50 approximately 100 nM, a potency similar to clinically tolerated blockers such as memantine, and only marginally blocked on non-NMDA glutamate receptors. Abstract The human brain can automatically detect auditory changes, as indexed by the mismatch negativity of event-related potentials. The mechanisms that underlie this response are poorly understood. We recorded primary auditory cortical and hippocampal (dentate gyrus, CA1) local-field potentials to serial tones in urethane-anesthetized rats. In an oddball condition, a rare (deviant) tone ( p  = 0.11) randomly replaced a repeated (standard) tone. The deviant tone was either lower (2200, 2700, 3200, 3700 Hz) or higher (4300, 4800, 5300, 5800 Hz) in frequency than the standard tone (4000 Hz). Signaling through BMPR-IA regulates quiescence and long-term activity of neural stem cells in the adult hippocampus.

SummaryNeural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult hippocampus divide infrequently, and the molecules that modulate their quiescence are largely unknown. Here, we show that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is active in hippocampal NSCs, downstream of BMPR-IA. BMPs reversibly diminish proliferation of cultured NSCs while maintaining their undifferentiated state. In vivo, acute blockade of BMP signaling in the hippocampus by intracerebral infusion of Noggin first recruits quiescent NSCs into the cycle and increases neurogenesis; subsequently, it leads to decreased stem cell division and depletion of precursors and newborn neurons. Background Propofol reduces neuronal damage from cerebral ischemia when investigated for less than 8 postischemic days. This study investigates the long-term effects of propofol on neuronal damage and apoptosis-related proteins after cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned as follows: group 1 (n = 32, control): fentanyl and nitrous oxide-oxygen; group 2 (n = 32, propofol): propofol and oxygen-air. Radiotherapy for Graves’ ophthalmopathy

The interest in the treatment of benign diseases with radiation therapy has grown particularly in the Western part of the world. In 1996, a questionnaire was sent to 1348 institutes worldwide listed in the directory of the Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology asking whether the respondents considered a list of 28 most common benign disorders as being a good indication for orbital radiotherapy.1 Questions concerned the frequency of such treatments and the treatment schedules used. The prevention of keloid formation was the most widely accepted indication, followed by Graves’ ophthalmopathy. Thus, radiotherapy for this orbital disorder is generally accepted and applied worldwide.

Slowed abduction saccades in bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia

Horizontal eye movements were investigated in 65 patients with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia utilizing direct current electro-oculography. Abduction saccades were slowed in 35 patients (53.8%), being hypermetric in 65.7% of them. Slowing of abduction saccades is attributed to impaired inhibition of the tonic resting activity of the antagonistic medial rectus muscle. Experimental data indicate that this slowing results from a lesion of an uncrossed connection between the pontine reticular formation and the oculomotor nucleus. Thromboelastography (TEG) is a global test of coagulation that records the viscoelastic changes in blood during clot formation. Cardiosurgery and liver transplantation are established fields of application for TEG. Severe sepsis is often characterized by an imbalance of the haemostatic equilibrium between clot formation and fibrinolysis in favor of a procoagulant status, especially in the first phase.
