D-Galactose binding lectins from the tunicate Ascidiamalaca: Subunit characterization and hemocyte surface distribution

Abstract D-galactose specific lectins purified from Ascidia malaca serum contain a major protein component with an apparent molecular weight of about 58,000 daltons, which moves more rapidly under non-reducing conditions. Intramolecular disulfide linkages can explain this behaviour, suggesting a compact protein structure. Membrane lectins have been demonstrated on the surface of about 34% hemocytes by immunofluorescent methods using a rabbit antiserum against the isolated serum lectins. Small, medium and large hemocytes can be positive, as also shown by binding on Sepharose spherules or by rosette formation with sheep and rabbit erythrocytes. Modeling of growth and lactate fermentation by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis in batch culture

The kinetic behaviour of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis was studied in batch culture under non-limiting conditions that allow high growth and product formation. A model based on laboratory results is proposed for growth and l-lactate fermentation. It shows the necessity for differentiating biomass into three physiological states, two active, Xg (growth + acidification) and Xng (acidification), and one inactive, Xi. Experimental demonstration of phase bistability in a broad-area optical oscillator with injected signal

We demonstrate experimentally that a broad-area laserlike optical oscillator (a nondegenerate photorefractive oscillator) with structured injected signal displays two-phase patterns. The technique [de Valc\'arcel and Staliunas, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 054101 (2010)] consists in spatially modulating the injection, so that its phase alternates periodically between two opposite values, i.e., differing by $\ensuremath{\pi}$.

Hysteretic nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition

We show that a parametrically driven cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation exhibits a hysteretic nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition for large enough quintic nonlinearity. These results help to understand the recent experimental observation of this pheomenon [A. Esteban-Martin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 223903 (2005)].

Black hole lightning due to particle acceleration at subhorizon scales

Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry, but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here, we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC telescopes revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Enthalpies of formation of isoprene’s major oxidation byproducts

Abstract The theoretical enthalpies of formation ( Δ f H 298 . 15 ∘ ) of methyl vinyl ketone (MVK, CH 2 CHC(O)CH 3 ), methacrolein (MACR, CH 2 C(CH 3 )CHO), and the radical products formed in their corresponding OH radical oxidations have been calculated with DFT (MPW1K/6-31+G(d,p)) and multilevel (MCCM-UT-CCSD(T)//MPW1K/6-31+G(d,p)) methods. The bond dissociation energies ( BDE , DH 298 . 15 0 ) of the H-atoms that can be abstracted from the MVK and MACR molecules, and the C–O forming bonds of the OH addition products are also calculated. The regioselectivity of the global reaction is discussed in terms of bond strength.

Preliminary analysis of osteocyte lacunar density in long bones of tetrapods: all measures are bigger in sauropod dinosaurs.

Osteocytes harbour much potential for paleobiological studies. Synchrotron radiation and spectroscopic analyses are providing fascinating data on osteocyte density, size and orientation in fossil taxa. However, such studies may be costly and time consuming. Here we describe an uncomplicated and inexpensive method to measure osteocyte lacunar densities in bone thin sections.
