The medial cortex of lizards is a simple three-layered brain region displaying many characteristics that parallel the hippocampal fascia dentata of mammals. Its principal neurons form a morphologically diverse population, partly as a result of the prominent continuous growth of this nervous center. By using the classic Golgi impregnation method, we describe here the morphology of the principal neurons populating the medial cortex of Podarcis hispanica. These were projection neurons giving off descending axons. Recent work identified L-asparaginase (L-ASP) as a putative therapeutic target for ovarian cancer. We suggest that L-ASP, a dysregulator of glycosylation, would interrupt the local microenvironment, affecting the ovarian cancer cell-endothelial cell interaction and thus angiogenesis without cytotoxic effects. Neuroglobin, a vertebrate oxygen-binding protein, is expressed in many regions of the adult brain. We examined the cell type-specific expression of neuroglobin in neurons and astroglial cells in primary cultures of fetal hippocampal cells and sections of the adult mouse brain using neuroglobin-specific polyclonal antibodies and cell type-specific markers NeuN and GFAP to differentiate between neurons and glial cells. Neuroglobin is exclusively expressed in neurons, but not in astroglial cells. We investigated the immune response induced by mucosal immunization of BALB/c mice with virus-like particles (VLPs) of a genogroup II norovirus, Dijon171/96 virus, produced in the baculovirus system. VLPs administered alone by the intranasal route induced a high serum antibody response as well as fecal IgA, which were enhanced when the heat-labile Escherichia coli toxin or its non toxic mutant LT(R192G) was coadministered. The molecular layer of the dentate gyrus appears as the main entrance gate for information into the hippocampus, i.e., where the perforant path axons from the entorhinal cortex synapse onto the spines and dendrites of granule cells. Mast cell (MC)-deficient c-Kit mutant Kit(W/W-v) mice are protected against experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis, suggesting a detrimental role for MCs in this disease. To further investigate the role of MCs in EAE, we took advantage of a recently characterized model of MC deficiency, Kit(W-sh/W-sh).
