Pd nanoparticles formation inside porous polymeric scaffolds followed by in situ XANES/SAXS

International audience; Simultaneous time-resolved SAXS and XANES techniques were employed to follow in situ the formation of Pd nanoparticles from palladium acetate precursor in two porous polymeric supports: polystyrene (PS) and poly(4-vinyl-pyridine) (P4VP). In this study we have investigated the effect of the use of different reducing agents (H-2 and CO) from the gas phase. These results, in conjunction with data obtained by diffuse reflectance IR (DRIFT) spectroscopy and TEM measurements, allowed us to unravel the different roles played by gaseous H-2 and CO in the formation of the Pd nanoparticles for both PS and P4VP hosting scaffolds
Branch Points of Algebraic Functions and the Beginnings of Modern Knot Theory

Many of the key ideas which formed modern topology grew out of “normal research” in one of the mainstream fields of 19th-century mathematical thinking, the theory of complex algebraic functions. These ideas were eventually divorced from their original context. The present study discusses an example illustrating this process. During the years 1895-1905, the Austrian mathematician, Wilhelm Wirtinger, tried to generalize Felix Klein's view of algebraic functions to the case of several variables. Modified post-bifurcation dynamics and routes to chaos from double-Hopf bifurcations in a hyperchaotic system

In order to understand the onset of hyperchaotic behavior recently observed in many systems, we study bifurcations in the modified Chen system leading from simple dynamics into chaotic regimes. In particular, we demonstrate that the existence of only one fixed point of the system in all regions of parameter space implies that this simple point attractor may only be destabilized via a Hopf or double Hopf bifurcation as system parameters are varied. Saddle-node, transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations are precluded. The normal form immediately following double Hopf bifurcations is constructed analytically by the method of multiple scales. Cavity solitons in nondegenerate optical parametric oscillation

Abstract We find analytically cavity solitons in nondegenerate optical parametric oscillators. These solitons are exact localised solutions of a pair of coupled parametrically driven Ginzburg–Landau equations describing the system for large pump detuning. We predict the existence of a Hopf bifurcation of the soliton resulting in a periodically pulsing localised structure. We give numerical evidence of the analytical results and address the problem of cavity soliton interaction.
Turing Instability and Pattern Formation for the Lengyel–Epstein System with Nonlinear Diffusion

In this work we study the effect of density dependent nonlinear diffusion on pattern formation in the Lengyel---Epstein system. Via the linear stability analysis we determine both the Turing and the Hopf instability boundaries and we show how nonlinear diffusion intensifies the tendency to pattern formation; in particular, unlike the case of classical linear diffusion, the Turing instability can occur even when diffusion of the inhibitor is significantly slower than activator's one. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, followed by density functional theory/molecular mechanics (DFT/MM) calculations, provided a detailed structure of the binding site between the cationic metallointercalator (dipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine)(glycinato)copper(II), [Cu(gly)(dppz)](+), and the two dodeca-deoxynucleotide duplexes [dodeca(dG-dC)]2 and [dodeca(dA-dT)]2. A Rainfall Simulator Laboratory Approach to Determine the Impact of Ash Depth on Runoff Generation and Soil Losses

Ash cover the forest fire affected soil for some weeks or months and act as a key factor to determine the soil and water losses. Ash depth is researched here to determine how affect the soil detachment and the runoff generation. Seventy rainfall simulation experiments on paired 0.50 m2 plots (five plots with 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15- and 30-mm ash depth), and repeated one week later) under thunderstorms of 48 mmh-1 for one hour were carried out under laboratory conditions. In the first experiment, after the bed of ash was applied, the results show that ash depth determines the runoff rates as they reduce the discharge from 23.1% to 13.9%. Testing the Outflow Process over a Triangular Labyrinth Weir

In this paper, the dimensionless stage-discharge relation for a sharp-crested triangular labyrinth weir, determined in a previous study, is initially tested by some experimental runs carried out in a laboratory flume. According to this relationship, the flow magnification is affected by the length-magnification ratio and the head to one cycle width ratio. The measurements allowed to test the applicability of this dimensionless relation for different values of both the angle of the sidewall to the main flow direction and the weir height. Finally, the proposed dimensionless equation was also tested by using experimental measurements carried out for broad-crested triangular labyrinth weir.
Osteogenesis imperfecta and hyperplastic callus formation: light- and electron-microscopic findings.

In rare cases of osteogenesis imperfecta, an "overshoot" growth of new bone may occur, which, clinically gives the impression of a tumour. This condition is known as hyperplastic callus formation. Morphology showed an excessive mixed desmal-chondral osteoneogenesis. Atypical collagen fibrils in non-callus tissue represent an indicator for this callus formation in individual patients.
