Measurements on partial discharge in on‐site operating power transformer: a case study

2018

This study presents the case study of a substation in-service power transformer referred to the on-site partial discharge (PD) detection and evaluation methods. An original methodology for simultaneous application of three methods is proposed: electrical, acoustic and ultra-high frequency. Transformer is powered by the power grid and no external generator is required according to the proposed methodology. Furthermore, several possibilities of applying these concurrent measurements and benefits of such solution in terms of result interpretation, interference resistance and on-site measurement applicability are indicated. The proposed methodology allows for a fast, accurate and secure PD diag…

Novel multipactor studies in RF satellite payloads: Single-carrier digital modulated signals and ferrite materials

2017

In this work it is reviewed the most novel advances in the multipactor RF breakdown risk assessment devoted to RF satellite microwave passive devices employed in space telecommunication systems. On one side, it is studied the effect of transmitting a single-carrier digital modulated signal in the multipactor RF voltage threshold in a coaxial line. On the other hand, an analysis of the multipactor phenomenon in a parallel-plate waveguide containing a magnetized ferrite slab it is presented.

The α and γ plasma modes in plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition with O2-N2 capacitive discharges

2017

Two distinguishable plasma modes in the O2–N2 radio frequency capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) used in remote plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) were observed. Optical emission spectroscopy and spectra interpretation with rate coefficient analysis of the relevant processes were used to connect the detected modes to the α and γ modes of the CCP discharge. To investigate the effect of the plasma modes on the PEALD film growth, ZnO and TiO2 films were deposited using both modes and compared to the films deposited using direct plasma. The growth rate, thickness uniformity, elemental composition, and crystallinity of the films were found to correlate with the deposition mode. In re…

Multiple low-frequency broad band gaps generated by a phononic crystal of periodic circular cavity sandwich plates

2017

Abstract We propose a new type of phononic crystal (PnC) composed of a periodic alternation of circular cavity sandwich plates. In the low-frequency regime, the crystal can modulate the propagation of flexural waves. Governing equations are deduced basing on the classical theory of coupled extensional and flexural vibrations of plates. The dispersion relation of the infinite PnC is calculated by combining the transfer matrix method with Bloch theory. The dynamic response of the PnC with finite unit cells is further studied with finite element analysis. An experiment is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the PnC in vibration isolation. Numerical results and experimental results bo…

Power efficiency improvements with the radio frequency H− ion source

2016

CW 13.56 MHz radio frequency-driven H(-) ion source is under development at the University of Jyväskylä for replacing an existing filament-driven ion source at the MCC30/15 cyclotron. Previously, production of 1 mA H(-) beam, which is the target intensity of the ion source, has been reported at 3 kW of RF power. The original ion source front plate with an adjustable electromagnet based filter field has been replaced with a new front plate with permanent magnet filter field. The new structure is more open and enables a higher flux of ro-vibrationally excited molecules towards the plasma electrode and provides a better control of the potential near the extraction due to a stronger separation …

Study of the Secondary Electron Yield in Dielectrics Using Equivalent Circuital Models

2018

[EN] Secondary electron emission has an important role on the triggering of the multipactor effect; therefore, its study and characterization are essential in radio-frequency waveguide applications. In this paper, we propose a theoretical model, based on equivalent circuit models, to properly understand charging and discharging processes that occur in dielectric samples under electron irradiation for secondary electron emission characterization. Experimental results obtained for Pt, Si, GaS, and Teflon samples are presented to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. Good agreement between theory and experiments has been found.

Experimental Investigation of Efficiency Map for an Inverter-Fed Surface-Mount Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

2019

Losses in inverter-fed permanent magnet motors are underestimated by using analytical or numerical approach since additional losses due to extra harmonics of the frequency converter are normally skipped. Further, losses in switches and passive components of the converter and the effect of switching frequencies cannot be numerically taken into consideration. Loss-minimizing control and proper efficiency analysis of inverter-fed permanent magnet motors cannot be achieved if an efficiency map is built based on a numerical investigation of the motors alone. This works first reviews losses in a surface-mount permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) and frequency converters. The efficiency map …

Enhancement of the Multipactor Threshold Inside Nonrectangular Iris

2018

Multipactor breakdown is studied inside the capacitive iris of a rectangular waveguide with a skewed slot along its longitudinal cross section. Both the iris length and height are assumed to be small compared to the electromagnetic wavelength. Therefore, the quasi-static approximation is applied so as to describe the RF field distribution inside the iris gap, whereas a 2-D model is used to analyze the electron motion. The peculiarities of RF field structure are studied using the conformal mapping approach, which shows that the electric field lines can be approximated by circular arcs when the iris length is much larger than its height. The electron motion inside the iris gap is analyzed usi…

Interferences in Locally Resonant Sonic Metamaterials Formed from Helmholtz Resonators

2019

[EN] The emergence of materials artificially designed to control the transmission of waves, generally called metamaterials, has been a hot topic in the field of acoustics for several years. The design of these metamaterials is usually carried out by overlapping different wave control mechanisms. An example of this trend is the so-called Locally Resonant Sonic Materials, being one of them the Phononic Crystals with a local resonant structure. These metamaterials are formed by sets of isolated resonators in such a way that the control of the waves is carried out by resonances and by the existence of Bragg bandgaps, which appear due to the ordered distribution of the resonators. Their use is b…

The role of radio frequency scattering in high-energy electron losses from minimum-B ECR ion source

2021

Abstract The measurement of the axially lost electron energy distribution escaping from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source in the range of 4–800 keV is reported. The experiments have revealed the existence of a hump at 150–300 keV energy, containing up to 15% of the lost electrons and carrying up to 30% of the measured energy losses. The mean energy of the hump is independent of the microwave power, frequency and neutral gas pressure but increases with the magnetic field strength, most importantly with the value of the minimum-B field. Experiments in pulsed operation mode have indicated the presence of the hump only when microwave power is applied, confirming that the origi…
