Lateral organization of G M1 in phase-separated monolayers visualized by scanning force microscopy
2002
Phase separation of glycolipids in lipid mono- and bilayers is of great interest for the understanding of membrane function. The distribution of the ganglioside GM1 in sphingomyelin (SM)/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), SM/1,2-dipalmitoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) and SM/cholesterol/POPC Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers transferred at 36 mN/m has been studied by scanning force microscopy. Besides lateral organization of the glycolipid in LB monolayers as deduced from topography, material properties have been investigated by phase imaging, pulsed force mode and force modulation microscopy. It was shown that GM1 preferentially clusters in an ordered lipid m…
Inhibition by parasympathetic nerve stimulation of the release of the adrenergic transmitter
1970
Isolated rabbit atria were perfused with Tyrode solution containing (+)-amphetamine. Electrical stimulation of the right postganglionic sympathetic fibres caused an output of noradrenaline which was significantly decreased by simultaneous stimulation of the vagus nerves.
Neuroprotective effect of erythropoietin and darbepoetin alfa after experimental intracerebral hemorrhage.
2009
OBJECTIVE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating clinical syndrome for which no truly efficacious therapy has yet been identified. In preclinical studies, erythropoietin (EPO) and its long-lasting analog, darbepoetin alfa, have been demonstrated to be neuroprotective in several models of neuronal insult. The objectives of this study were to analyze whether the systemic administration of recombinant human EPO (rHuEPO) and its long-lasting derivative darbepoetin alfa expedited functional recovery and brain damage in a rat model of ICH. METHODS: Experimental ICH was induced in rats by injecting autologous blood into the right striatum under stereotactic guidance. Subsequently, animal…
A measure of concurrent neural firing activity based on mutual information
2020
AbstractMultiple methods have been developed in an attempt to quantify stimulus-induced neural coordination and to understand internal coordination of neuronal responses by examining the synchronization phenomena in neural discharge patterns. In this work we propose a novel approach to estimate the degree of concomitant firing between two neural units, based on a modified form of mutual information (MI) applied to a two-state representation of the firing activity. The binary profile of each single unit unfolds its discharge activity in time by decomposition into the state of neural quiescence/low activity and state of moderate firing/bursting. Then, the MI computed between the two binary st…
Interrelations between globus pallidus and hippocampal epilepsy in the cat (1)
1984
AbstractElectrically induced afterdischarge (ADs) were evoked in the cats' dorsal hippocampus. The action of the conditioning prestimulation of the pallidus nucleus on AD duration was studied. A significant facilitatory influence was observed when pallidal conditioning stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The time course of the phenomenon showed a decrease of the conditioning action when the interval between the two stimulations increased: complete disappearance of the effect occurred after about 800 ms. Results are discussed as far as functional relationships between basal ganglia and rhinencephalic system are concerned.
Decreasing dietary linoleic acid promotes long chain omega-3 fatty acid incorporation into rat retina and modifies gene expression
2011
International audience; Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) may be partially prevented by dietary habits privileging the consumption of ω3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3s) while lowering linoleic acid (LA) intake. The present study aimed to document whether following these epidemiological guidelines would enrich the neurosensory retina and RPE with ω3s and modulate gene expression in the neurosensory retina. Rat progenitors and pups were fed with diets containing low or high LA, and low or high ω3s. After scotopic single flash and 8-Hz-Flicker electroretinography, rat pups were euthanized at adulthood. The fatty acid profile of the neurosensory retina, RPE, liver, adipose tis…
SISTEMIC MANIFESTATIONS IN CROHN DISEASE: OUR EXPERIENCE
2009
Arthritis and Crohm's disease has a close link and are frequently associated with aspecific and specific dermatitis. The arthritis is counted as the worst side effect of Crohn's disease. The greatest part of chronic inflammatory bowel disease induce with dermatologic disease, tha are sometimes the first clinical manifestation. In this article the authors desrcibe their clinical observation about orthopaedic, dermatologic and gastroenteric manifestations.
Role of two sequence motifs of mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor in its survival-promoting activity
2015
AbstractMesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) is a prosurvival protein that protects the cells when applied intracellularly in vitro or extracellularly in vivo. Its protective mechanisms are poorly known. Here we studied the role of two short sequence motifs within the carboxy-(C) terminal domain of MANF in its neuroprotective activity: the CKGC sequence (a CXXC motif) that could be involved in redox reactions, and the C-terminal RTDL sequence, an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) retention signal. We mutated these motifs and analyzed the antiapoptotic effect and intracellular localization of these mutants of MANF when overexpressed in cultured sympathetic or sensory neurons. …
Ganglioside GD3 shedding by human malignant melanoma cells
1989
Gangliosides appear to be important target molecules for immunological effector mechanisms on neuro-ectodermal tumors. Therefore in vitro studies were performed to examine whether ganglioside GD3, which is highly expressed on the cell surface of cultured human melanoma cells, is being shed into the culture medium. Measurable quantities of gangliosides GM3 and in particular GD3 were shed by the melanoma cells we have tested as detected on thin-layer chromatograms (TLC) stained with orcinol. Ganglioside GD3 was also evidenced by immunostaining with anti-GD3 MAb and by ELISA. The concentration of GD3 in the supernatant of human melanoma cells depended on the ganglioside pattern of the cell lin…
