A Magnetohydrodynamic Generator for Marine Energy Harvesting
2018
In this article we present an approach to the description of Magneto-hydrodynamic Marine Energy Harvesting (MHMEH) system. Preliminarly, a general discussion on the principle of operation is presented. Successively, in order to move beyond the analytical model, a 3-D MHD modeling tool and a Runge Kutta method based solver are presented and they are used to investigate an alternative MHD solutions. Some numerical analyses are given.
Radiolabelling and preliminary evaluation of 68Ga-tetrapyrrole derivatives as potential tracers for PET
2013
article i nfo Tetrapyrroles are multisided natural products which are of relevance in clinical medicine. Owing to their specific accumulation in tumour tissue, porphyrins, metalloporphyrins and chlorins have been used as in photodynamic therapy and optical imaging. Moreover, their specific uptake into inflammatory atheromatous plaques via LDL endocytosis has been reported. The present study is concerned with the synthesis of 68 Ga labelled porphyrin derivatives and an in vitro assessment of the utility of radiotracers in positron emission tomography. A set of five porphyrin derivatives were labelled using 68 Ga from a commercially obtained radionuclide generator. Dedicated post-processing o…

Tailoring of the electrical and thermal properties using ultra-short period non-symmetric superlattices
2016
Thermoelectric modules based on half-Heusler compounds offer a cheap and clean way to create eco-friendly electrical energy from waste heat. Here we study the impact of the period composition on the electrical and thermal properties in non-symmetric superlattices, where the ratio of components varies according to (TiNiSn):(HfNiSn), and 0 n 6 unit cells. The thermal conductivity () showed a strong dependence on the material content achieving a minimum value for n = 3, whereas the highest value of the figure of merit ZT was achieved for n = 4. The measured can be well modeled using non-symmetric strain relaxation applied to the model of the series of thermal resistanc…
Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads
2016
AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…
High Electron Mobility and Disorder Induced by Silver Ion Migration Lead to Good Thermoelectric Performance in the Argyrodite Ag8SiSe6
2017
Superionic chalcopyrites have recently attracted interest in their use as potential thermoelectric materials because of extraordinary low thermal conductivities. To overcome long-term stability issues in thermoelectric generators using superionic materials at evaluated temperatures, materials need to be found that show good thermoelectric performance at moderate temperatures. Here, we present the structural and thermoelectric properties of the argyrodite Ag8SiSe6, which exhibits promising thermoelectric performance close to room temperature.
Design and experimental validation of a high voltage ratio DC/DC converter for proton exchange membrane electrolyzer applications
2019
Abstract This paper deals with hydrogen production via water electrolysis, which is considered the most attractive and promising solution. Specifically, the use of renewable energy sources, such as wind electric power generators, is hypothesized for supplying the electrolyzer, aiming to strongly reduce the environmental impact. In particular, micro-wind energy conversion systems (μWECSs) are attractive for their low cost and easy installation. In order to interface the μWECS and the electrolyzer, suitable power conditioning systems such as step-down DC-DC converters are mandatory. However, due to the requested high conversion ratio between the DC bus grid, i.e. the output of a three-phase d…
Series and parallel resonant inverters for induction heating under short-circuit conditions considering parasitic components
1999
Series and parallel resonant inverters are the common structures in high power industrial generators for induction heating applications. In practical working conditions, short-circuit of the heating coil is very common, normally producing overvoltages that can damage the power transistors of the inverter if no special precautions are taken. The aim of the paper is to show the mechanism of how overvoltages are generated under short-circuit conditions of the heating coil for series and parallel inverters.
High voltage stabilisation for an on-line isotope separator
1981
Abstract Stabilisation for a high voltage generator up to 60 kV has been developed. The voltage is stable within ±0.1 V. This allows the very accurate acceleration of charged particles.
A Magnetostrictive Electric Power Generator for energy harvesting from traffic: Design and experimental verification
2015
In the last decades, the growth in energy demand, the decrease of fossil fuels available in the market and the impact of anthropogenic factors on climate change has given new impulse to research on renewable energy systems, particularly those known as energy harvesting devices (EHDs) [1]. A large number of EHDs have been proposed, using different operating principle [1-4]. Among them, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive seem to be particularly suitable for the application in EHD. In these materials the application of external mechanical stress induces a change in the level of magnetization and therefore an electromotive force (emf) can be generated and collected in order to produce electrica…
