Influence of Glass Additions on Illitic Clay Ceramics

2020

A mixture of an illitic clay and waste glass was prepared and studied during the sintering process. The illitic clay, from the Liepa deposit (Latvia), and green glass waste (GW) were disintegrated to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The addition of disintegrated GW (5&ndash

Atomic layer deposition and characterization of biocompatible hydroxyapatite thin films

2009

Abstract Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to produce hydroxyapatite from Ca(thd) 2 (thd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato) and (CH 3 O) 3 PO onto Si(100) and Corning (0211). Film crystallinity, stoichiometry, possible impurities and surface morphology were determined. The as-deposited films contained significant amounts of carbonate impurities however, annealing at moist N 2 flow reduced the carbonate content even at 400 °C. The as-deposited Ca–P–O films were amorphous but rapid thermal annealing promoted the formation of the hydroxyapatite phase. Mouse MC 3T3-E1 cells were used for the cell culture experiments. According to the bioactivity studies cell proliferation was enhanc…

Bearing strength and failure behavior of pinned hybrid glass-flax composite laminates

2018

Abstract The aim of the present work is to evaluate the influence of external layers of glass woven fabric on the pin-hole strength of flax/epoxy laminates. Single lap bearing tests were carried out to evaluate the fastened joint performances depending on laminate stacking sequence. In order to better identify the mechanical behavior of the hybrid laminate, full glass and flax laminates were also compared. In particular, bearing stress and failure mechanisms were investigated at varying joint geometry. Furthermore, an experimental failure map, clustering main failure modes of pinned hybrid composite laminate, was used to better clarify the relationship between mechanical failure and geometr…

Compressive behaviour of laminated structural glass members

2011

Abstract Several experimental investigations in the past few years have highlighted the fact that the compressive strength of glass was significantly higher than its tensile strength, allowing new applications of glass in compression members. However, due to the high slenderness of structural glass elements made of thin glass panels, they tend to fail in a brittle manner. A substantial amount of fundamental research has been carried out in the past few years to investigate the stability behaviour of structural glass elements. However, although buckling of glass panels has been quite well studied, a very poor amount of research has been addressed to glass columns, which by contrast represent…

Core-clad phosphate glass fibers for biosensing

2019

Recently, a phosphate glass with composition 20 CaO-20 SrO-10 Na2O-50 P2O5 (mol%) was found to have good potential as a biomaterial and to possess thermal properties suitable for fiber drawing. This study opened the path towards the development of fully bioresorbable fibers promising for biosensing. In the past, this phosphate glass with CeO2 was found to increase the refractive index and the glass stability. Therefore, a new SrO-containing glass was prepared with 1 mol% of CeO2 and core fibers were drawn from it. A core-clad fiber was also processed, where the core was a Ce-doped glass and the clad undoped, to allow for total internal reflection. The mechanical properties of the core and c…

Er3+-doped GeGaSbS glasses for mid-IR fibre laser application: Synthesis and rare earth spectroscopy

2008

International audience; With an infrared transparency extended to 10 µm, low multiphonon relaxation rates and suitable rare earth solubility, sulphide glasses in the Ge-Ga-Sb-S system allow radiative emission from rare earth ions in the mid-IR range. The Er3+ ion, widely studied in glass fibres for optical amplification at 1.5 µm, presents an interesting transition for mid-IR applications around 4.5 µm (4I9/2→ 4I11/2). Thus, the aim of this work is to evaluate the Er3+-doped Ge20Ga5Sb10S65 glass as a potential fibre laser source operating in the 3-5 µm mid-IR spectral region. For that purpose, absorption and emission spectra were recorded from visible to mid-IR and the radiative lifetimes o…

Optical and Vibrational Spectra of CsCl-Enriched GeS2-Ga2S3 Glasses

2016

Optical and FTIR spectroscopy was employed to study the properties of 80GeS2-20Ga2S3-CsCl chalcohalide glasses with CsCl additives in a temperature range of 77–293 K. It is shown that CsCl content results in the shift of fundamental absorption edge in the visible region. Vibrational bands in FTIR spectra of (80GeS2-20Ga2S3)100 − х (СsCl) x (x = 5, 10, and 15) are identified near 2500 cm−1, 3700 cm−1,, around 1580 cm−1, and a feature at 1100 cm−1. Low energy shifts of vibrational frequencies in glasses with a higher amount of CsCl can be caused by possible thermal expansion of the lattice and nanovoid agglomeration formed by CsCl additives in the inner structure of the Ge-Ga-S glass.

Investigation of absorber and heterojunction in the pure sulphide kesterite

2021

This paper aims to study the properties of the absorber layer and the heterojunction in kesterite solar cells. The Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films were layered on a glass substrate from a colloidal solution of metal salts and thiourea dissolved in a mixture of water and ethanol and deposited by spin coating technique. The samples were then heat treated in a furnace, in the presence of sulphur powder and under a nitrogen gas flow. The results revealed the formation of homogeneous layers of a pure kesterite phase of CZTS crystallites after heat treatment with correct stoichiometry and oxidation states. The optical transmission measurements indicate an energy band-gap of 1.4 eV and an absorption c…

Elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering studies in KBr:KCN mixed crystals

1989

Neutron scattering studies in (KBr)1–x(KCN)x mixed crystals are presented utilizing powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction and time-of-flight techniques. Forx>0.6 (KBr)1–x(KCN)x crystals exhibit ferroelastic and ferroelectric low-temperature phases. Crystals withx<0.6 undergo transitions into an orientational glass state. Here we present a detailed phase diagram including new results for x=0.85 and x=0.65. For the latter system a stable rhombohedral low-temperature phase has been detected where the orientational disorder of the plastic phase is only partly removed and quadrupolar relaxations between three body diagonals are still possible. From the powder diffraction experimen…
