50 mJ/30 ns FTIR Q-switched diode-pumped Er:Yb:glass 1.54 μm laser

Abstract 50 mJ Q-switched output at 30 ns pulse duration was demonstrated with a transversely diode-pumped bulk Er 3+ :Yb 3+ :glass 1.54 μm laser system of uncomplicated and compact design, using a piezoelectrically driven FTIR shutter. In long-pulse operation, 360 mJ output was obtained for 2.65 J incident optical pump energy. Maximum optical slope efficiencies of 20.5% and 5.4% were measured in long-pulse and Q-switched operation, respectively. Optimum Q-switch timing was studied taking into account the Yb 3+ →Er 3+ energy transfer process and was correlated with free-running delay parameters.

Approximate Solution on Large Deflection of Glass Panels Subjected to Uniform Pressure

The estimation of the deflection of glass panels under wind pressure is important in designing external facades of buildings. A direct method to compute the large deflections of glass panels under uniform loads such as wind pressure is presented. The model allows for derivation of the load-deflection response of square or rectangular multilayered glass panels subject to uniform loads. The boundary conditions examined are those of four-point discontinuous supports or continuous supports along the four sides. Electrical connections and driving electronics for piezo-actuated x-ray thin glass optics

Use of thin glass modular optics is a technology currently under study to build light, low cost, large area X-ray telescopes for high energy astrophysics space missions. The angular resolution of such telescopes is limited by local deviations from the ideal shape of the mirrors. One possible strategy to improve it consists in actively correcting the mirror profile by gluing thin ceramic piezo-electric actuators on the back of the glasses. A large number of actuators, however, requires several electrical connections to drive them with the different needed voltages. Low Temperature Afterglow from SrAl <sub>2</sub>O <sub>4</sub>: EU, Dy, B Containing Glass

SrAl2O4: Eu, Dy, B particles were added in a phosphate glass (90NaPO3-10NaF (in mol%)) using the direct doping method. For the first time, the composition of the particles prior to and after embedding them in the glass was analysed using EPMA analysis. Boron was found to be incorporated in already distorted surroundings creating new trapping centers in the particles which are thought to be favourable for the tunnelling process and so for the afterglow at 10K. Despite the partial decomposition of the particles, the glass exhibit afterglow at low temperature confirming to be promising materials for low temperature applications.

An aging evaluation of the bearing performances of glass fiber composite laminate in salt spray fog environment

The aim of the present paper is to assess the bearing performance evolution of pinned, glass-composite laminates due to environmental aging in salt-spray fog tests. Glass fibers/epoxy pinned laminates were exposed for up to 60 days in salt-spraying, foggy environmental conditions (according to ASTM B117 standard). Structural organization of silanol and silicon hydride groups in the amorphous silicon dioxide network

We present a study on the effects of an isothermal annealing treatment on a-SiO 2 having a significant content of silanol hydride groups (Si-H). We examined the properties of the IR absorption bands of silanol (Si-OH) and silicon hydride groups as a function of the duration of the thermal treatment. We showed that the Si-OH and Si-H groups contents decrease in a linearly correlated way. The annealing dynamics suggest that the two species are close to each other in the amorphous network. Electron microprobe technique for the determination of iron oxidation state in silicate glasses

We present a new calibration for the determination of the iron oxidation state in silicate glasses by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) with the "flank method." This method is based on the changes in both intensity and wavelength of the FeLα and FeLβ X-ray emission lines with iron oxidation state. The flank method utilizes the maximum difference for the FeLα and FeLβ spectra observed at the peak flanks between different standard materials, which quantitatively correlates with the Fe2+ content. Provided that this correlation is calibrated on reference materials, the Fe2+/ΣFe ratio can be determined for samples with known total Fe content. Suspended core tellurite glass optical fibers for infrared supercontinuum generation

International audience; We report the fabrication and characterization of tellurite TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O (TZN) microstructured suspended core optical fibers (MOFs). These fibers are designed for infrared supercontinuum generation with zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) at 1.451 mu m. The measured losses at this wavelength are approximately 6 dB/m for a MOF with a 2.2 mu m diameter core. The effective area of a particular fiber is 3.5 mu m(2) and the nonlinear coefficient is calculated to be 437 W(-1)km(-1). By pumping a 20 cm long fiber at 1.56 mu m with a sub-nj femtosecond laser source, we generate a supercontinuum (SC) spanning over 800 nm in the 1-2 mu m wavelength range.

Chalcogenide glass hollow core photonic crystal fibers

International audience; We report the first hollow core photonic crystal fibers (HC PCF) in chalcogenide glass. To design the required HC PCF profiles for such high index glass, we use both band diagram analysis to define the required photonic bandgap and numerical simulations of finite size HC PCFs to compute the guiding losses. The material losses have also been taken into account to compute the overall losses of the HC PCF profiles. These fibers were fabricated by the stack and draw technique from Te20As30Se50 (TAS) glass. Tellurites fibers for infrared supercontinuum sources : opto-geometric profiles and extrinsic absorptions management

This PhD thesis work focuses on the synthesis and purification of vitreous materials used for the development of waveguides with varied profiles, dedicated to supercontinuum (SC) generation between 1 and 5 μm.Concerning the purification of tellurite glasses, several leads were followed, but best results are obtained for the purification of the TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glassy system by the means of zinc fluoride.
