High-Gradient issues in S-band RF Acceleration Structure for Hadrontherapy accelerators and Radio Frequency Quadrupoles
2020
A Specialized Architecture for Color Image Edge Detection Based on Clifford Algebra
2013
Edge detection of color images is usually performed by applying the traditional techniques for gray-scale images to the three color channels separately. However, human visual perception does not differentiate colors and processes the image as a whole. Recently, new methods have been proposed that treat RGB color triples as vectors and color images as vector fields. In these approaches, edge detection is obtained extending the classical pattern matching and convolution techniques to vector fields. This paper proposes a hardware implementation of an edge detection method for color images that exploits the definition of geometric product of vectors given in the Clifford algebra framework to ex…
Univacuolar refractile hemocytes from the tunicate Ciona intestinalis are cytotoxic for mammalian erythrocytes in vitro
1996
A discontinuous, Percoll density gradient was used to separate hemocyte populations from the hemolymph of Ciona intestinalis. Hemocytes from each band were examined for their frequency, morphology, and cytotoxic activity against rabbit and sheep erythrocytes; results were expressed as a percentage of hemolysis. Statistical analysis revealed that only the "univacuolar" granulocytes from Band 5, which contain a vacuole of refractile material, were cytotoxic. Cytotoxic activity was inhibited by sphingomyelin. For the first time in tunicates, lytic activity against erythrocytes was assessed by an assay based on plaque-forming cells. Plaques of lysis were revealed against rabbit erythrocytes but…
Effects of heat treatment on hydrogen production potential and microbial community of thermophilic compost enrichment cultures
2011
Cellulosic plant and waste materials are potential resources for fermentative hydrogen production. In this study, hydrogen producing, cellulolytic cultures were enriched from compost material at 52, 60 and 70°C. Highest cellulose degradation and highest H(2) yield were 57% and 1.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose(-1) (2.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose-degraded(-1)), respectively, obtained at 52°C with the heat-treated (80°C for 20 min) enrichment culture. Heat-treatments as well as the sequential enrichments decreased the diversity of microbial communities. The enrichments contained mainly bacteria from families Thermoanaerobacteriaceae and Clostridiaceae, from which a bacterium closely related to Thermoanaerobiu…
Methodological approach for evaluating the geo-exchange potential: VIGOR Project
2012
In the framework of VIGOR Project, a national project coordinated by the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG) and sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE), dedicated to the evaluation of geothermal potential in the regions of the Convergence Objective in Italy (Puglia, Calabria, Campania and Sicily), is expected to evaluate the ability of the territory to heat exchange with the ground for air conditioning of buildings. To identify the conditions for the development of low enthalpy geothermal systems collected and organized on a regional scale geological and stratigraphic data useful for the preparation of a specific thematic mapping, able to represent in a …
Microbiological investigation of Raphanus sativus L. grown hydroponically in nutrient solutions contaminated with spoilage and pathogenic bacteria
2012
Abstract The survival of eight undesired (spoilage/pathogenic) food related bacteria (Citrobacter freundii PSS60, Enterobacter spp. PSS11, Escherichia coli PSS2, Klebsiella oxytoca PSS82, Serratia grimesii PSS72, Pseudomonas putida PSS21, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia PSS52 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19114T) was investigated in mineral nutrient solution (MNS) during the crop cycle of radishes (Raphanus sativus L.) cultivated in hydroponics in a greenhouse. MNSs were microbiologically analyzed weekly by plate count. The evolution of the pure cultures was also evaluated in sterile MNS in test tubes. The inoculated trials contained an initial total mesophilic count (TMC) ranging between 6.…
Online Hyperparameter Search Interleaved with Proximal Parameter Updates
2021
There is a clear need for efficient hyperparameter optimization (HO) algorithms for statistical learning, since commonly applied search methods (such as grid search with N-fold cross-validation) are inefficient and/or approximate. Previously existing gradient-based HO algorithms that rely on the smoothness of the cost function cannot be applied in problems such as Lasso regression. In this contribution, we develop a HO method that relies on the structure of proximal gradient methods and does not require a smooth cost function. Such a method is applied to Leave-one-out (LOO)-validated Lasso and Group Lasso, and an online variant is proposed. Numerical experiments corroborate the convergence …
Effect of Space charge accumulation inside the thermoplastic insulation of a loaded HVDC model cable
2021
The space charge accumulation phenomenon represents one of the main degradation factors for the dielectrics employed in the field of the HVDC transmission. For this reason, the recommendation IEEE Std 1732-2017 has been proposed. In that standard, due to the importance attributed at the space charge phenomenon, the experts suggest the introduction of the space charge measurement in HVDC cables during the prequalification or type tests, by means of the PEA method. However, despite for tests in flat specimens the PEA technique is well consolidated, for cable specimens difficulties are still present. In particular, the PEA cell output signal is strongly conditioned by the arranged measurement …
Polymorphism of mytilin B mRNA is not traslated into mature peptide
2008
Diversity of mRNAs from mytilin B, one of the five mytilins identified in the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, has been investigated from circulating hemocytes. One mussel expressed simultaneously two to ten different mytilin B mRNAs as observed in denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), defining 10 individual DGGE patterns (named A to J) within the mussels from Messina, Sicily (Italy). Three patterns accounted for 79% of the individuals whereas other patterns were found in only 2-7% of the 57 analyzed mussels. Base mutations were observed at specific locations, mainly within COOH-terminus and 3'UTR, leading to 36 nucleotide sequence variants and 21 different coding …
Antimony-121 mössbauer and infrared spectral study on halophenylantimonate(III) Compounds
1981
Abstract The synthesis and the 121 Sb Mossbauer and infrared spectra of halophenylantimonates(III) M[PhSbX 3 ] (M Me 4 N, Ph 4 As;X Cl, Br, I) are reported, and the spectral data are discussed and compared with those of SbX 4 and other related systems. The results are in accord with the participation of the antimony 5s electrons in the SbPh bond. In the interpretation of the electric field gradient, the contributions to V zz from both the lone pair and the SbPh bond electron densities are assumed to be dominant.
