Multimodal treatment approaches for children with tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) have markedly contributed to improved survival. Before 1970, the survival rate among children with medulloblastoma, the most common malignant CNS tumor in children, was about 20%. At present, in contrast, cure can be achieved in more than 75% of children with a favorable constellation of risk factors. In this review article for clinicians, we give an overview of the current understanding of the pathology, presenting manifestations, early diagnosis, and treatment of CNS tumors in children and adolescents.We report the research findings of the German Treatment Network "HIT" and selectively review the …

Abstract Let F be a field of characteristic zero and U J 2 ( F ) be the Jordan algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices over F . In this paper we give a complete description of the space of multilinear graded and ordinary identities in the language of Young diagrams through the representation theory of a Young subgroup of S n . For every Z 2 -grading of U J 2 ( F ) we compute the multiplicities in the graded cocharacter sequence and furthermore we compute the ordinary cocharacter.
Polynomial identities for the Jordan algebra of a degenerate symmetric bilinear form

Let J(n) be the Jordan algebra of a degenerate symmetric bilinear form. In the first section we classify all possible G-gradings on J(n) where G is any group, while in the second part we restrict our attention to a degenerate symmetric bilinear form of rank n - 1, where n is the dimension of the vector space V defining J(n). We prove that in this case the algebra J(n) is PI-equivalent to the Jordan algebra of a nondegenerate bilinear form.
Same work, lower grade? Student ethnicity and teachers’ subjective assessments

Previous research shows that ethnic minority students perform poorer in school when they are taught by ethnic majority teachers. Why this is the case was unclear. This paper focuses on one important potential explanation: I examine whether ethnic majority teachers grade minority and majority students differently for the same work. Using an experiment, I rule out the existence of such a direct grading bias. I do find indirect evidence for alternative explanations: teachers report lower expectations and unfavorable attitudes that both likely affect their behavior towards minority students, potentially inducing them to perform below their ability level. Ependymoma tumors likely derive from the ependymal cells lining the CNS ventricular system. In grade II ependymomas, tumor cells resemble typical ependymocytes, while anaplastic ependymomas are poorly differentiated. We studied three grade II and one anaplastic ependymoma, focusing on the ciliary structures. To unambiguously characterize the ultrastructure and number of cilia, we performed electron microscopy serial section analysis of individual cells. Differentiated ependymomas contained large basal bodies and up to three cilia, and lacked centrioles. Objective: To assess inter and intra observer variability in grading oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) using Smith and Pindborg grading system, WHO classification system and Brothwell DJ et al. classification system. Study design: In the study 45 histological tissues of dysplasia, 15 each of mild, moderate and severe dysplasia were coded and blindly graded by three observers in three grading systems. Quantification of characteristic bone marrow biopsy features includes basic parameters such as cellularity and fiber content. These are important to assess the dynamics of disease processes with a significant impact on risk stratification, survival patterns and, especially, therapy-related changes. Gradings on the algebra of upper triangular matrices and their graded identities

Abstract Let K be an infinite field and let UT n ( K ) denote the algebra of n × n upper triangular matrices over K . We describe all elementary gradings on this algebra. Further we describe the generators of the ideals of graded polynomial identities of UT n ( K ) and we produce linear bases of the corresponding relatively free graded algebras. We prove that one can distinguish the elementary gradings by their graded identities. We describe bases of the graded polynomial identities in several “typical” cases. Although in these cases we consider elementary gradings by cyclic groups, the same methods serve for elementary gradings by any finite group.
