Finite index subgroups of mapping class groups

2011

Let g ≥ 3 and n ≥ 0, and let Mg,n be the mapping class group of a surface of genus g with n boundary components. We prove that Mg,n contains a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g − 1) up to conjugation, a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g + 1) up to conjugation, and the other proper subgroups ofMg,n are of index greater than 2g−1(2g+1). In particular, the minimum index for a proper subgroup of Mg,n is 2g−1(2g − 1). AMS Subject Classification. Primary: 57M99. Secondary: 20G40, 20E28. 0 Introduction and statement of results The interaction between mapping class groups and finite groups has long been a topic of interest. The famous Hurwitz bound of 1893 showed that the mapping class group of a clo…

On the tensor degree of finite groups

2013

We study the number of elements $x$ and $y$ of a finite group $G$ such that $x \otimes y= 1_{_{G \otimes G}}$ in the nonabelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ of $G$. This number, divided by $|G|^2$, is called the tensor degree of $G$ and has connection with the exterior degree, introduced few years ago in [P. Niroomand and R. Rezaei, On the exterior degree of finite groups, Comm. Algebra 39 (2011), 335--343]. The analysis of upper and lower bounds of the tensor degree allows us to find interesting structural restrictions for the whole group.

Embeddings of graph braid and surface groups in right-angled Artin groups and braid groups

2003

We prove by explicit construction that graph braid groups and most surface groups can be embedded in a natural way in right-angled Artin groups, and we point out some consequences of these embedding results. We also show that every right-angled Artin group can be embedded in a pure surface braid group. On the other hand, by generalising to right-angled Artin groups a result of Lyndon for free groups, we show that the Euler characteristic -1 surface group (given by the relation x^2y^2=z^2) never embeds in a right-angled Artin group.

On the CAT(0) dimension of 2-dimensional Bestvina-Brady groups

2002

Let K be a 2-dimensional finite flag complex. We study the CAT(0) dimension of the `Bestvina-Brady group', or `Artin kernel', Gamma_K. We show that Gamma_K has CAT(0) dimension 3 unless K admits a piecewise Euclidean metric of non-positive curvature. We give an example to show that this implication cannot be reversed. Different choices of K lead to examples where the CAT(0) dimension is 3, and either (i) the geometric dimension is 2, or (ii) the cohomological dimension is 2 and the geometric dimension is not known.

On the Frattini subgroup of a finite group

2016

We study the class of finite groups $G$ satisfying $\Phi (G/N)= \Phi(G)N/N$ for all normal subgroups $N$ of $G$. As a consequence of our main results we extend and amplify a theorem of Doerk concerning this class from the soluble universe to all finite groups and answer in the affirmative a long-standing question of Christensen whether the class of finite groups which possess complements for each of their normal subgroups is subnormally closed.

The action of a compact Lie group on nilpotent Lie algebras of type {{n,2}}

2015

Abstract We classify finite-dimensional real nilpotent Lie algebras with 2-dimensional central commutator ideals admitting a Lie group of automorphisms isomorphic to SO 2 ⁢ ( ℝ ) ${{\mathrm{SO}}_{2}(\mathbb{R})}$ . This is the first step to extend the class of nilpotent Lie algebras 𝔥 ${{\mathfrak{h}}}$ of type { n , 2 } ${\{n,2\}}$ to solvable Lie algebras in which 𝔥 ${{\mathfrak{h}}}$ has codimension one.
