Immune-Inflammatory Responses and Oxidative Stress in Alzheimers Disease: Therapeutic Implications
2010
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous and progressive neurodegenerative disease which in Western society mainly accounts for clinical dementia. AD has been linked to inflammation and oxidative stress. Neuro-pathological hallmarks are senile plaques, resulting from the accumulation of several proteins and an inflammatory reaction around deposits of amyloid, a fibrillar protein, Abeta, product of cleavage of a much larger protein, the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) and neurofibrillary tangles. Inflammation clearly occurs in pathologically vulnerable regions of AD and several inflammatory factors influencing AD development, i.e. environmental factors (pro-inflammatory phenotype) an…
Transcription factors controlling development and function of innate lymphoid cells.
2014
Abstract Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphocytes, which play an important role in tissue homeostasis at epithelial surfaces. They are scarce in spleen and lymph nodes, but substantial numbers can be found in the intestinal mucosa even at steady state. There, they represent the first line of defence against invading pathogens and contribute to lymphorganogenesis, tissue repair and, when inappropriately activated, immune pathology. Lineage-specific development, function and maintenance of these cells depend on a restricted set of transcription factors that partially emerged as a result of diversification and selection during vertebrate evolution. The differential…
Bakteryjne strategie wykorzystania jonów metali – kulisy chemii koordynacyjnej
2022
n the Biological Inorganic Chemistry Group we are inspired to better understand metal ions acquisition and homeostasis in pathogenic bacteria, and in this review we present three different approaches to the role of these processes. The growing importance of a full understanding of the iron transport system in pathogens prompted us to study synthetic analogs of siderophores, used as structural probes in the process of iron uptake by microorganisms. The ferrichrome biomimetic analogs allowed efficient Fe(III) chelation under biological conditions and were recognized better by P. putida. than E. coli, suggesting differences in uptake mechanisms. Addition of a fluorescent probe to the compound …
Miłosierdzie w praktyce Domu Matki i Dziecka w Opolu
2016
Dom Matki i Dziecka w Opolu jest jedną z instytucji Diecezjalnej Fundacji Ochrony Życia. Powstał on w 1994 r. Artykuł przybliża historie powstania tej placówki, złożenia jej funkcjonowania or…
Virtual Exchange: Future-ready teaching of multiliteracies across borders and cultures
2020
Virtual exchange is an online form of internationalization at home. Students from different countries collaborate in small, international groups on tasks joined by a common theme. They combine their expertise when solving problems together. The teachers act as mentors, providing facilitation and support for the students during the virtual exchange. The student teams work independently by selecting the tools for the collaboration, allocating the tasks and creating the group’s final product. Virtual exchange is a transnational learning opportunity which enables students to learn and practice how to efficiently combine and make use of their digital, visual, critical, linguistic and intercultur…
Training practices of Filipino athletes during the early covid-19 lockdown
2022
The imposition of COVID-19 lockdown restricted the daily activities of many people, including athletes. This study investigated the training practices of athletes in the Philippines during the first COVID-19 lockdown. A total of 442 athletes answered an online survey (May-July 2020), with questions pertaining to training practices, such as training frequency and duration. Data were analyzed according to: athlete classification (world-class, international, national, state, or recreational), sport category (individual or team), and sex (male or female). During lockdown, significant reductions in training frequency (except recreational, i.e., lower pre-lockdown training) and duration were obse…
Systematic Use of Song and Music in Dementia Care: Health Care Providers’ Experiences
2020
Background and Aim Using song and music in a systematic way in residential dementia care may have several positive impacts on the patients, as well as the care providers. The aim of this study was to explore how health care providers experienced taking responsibility for conducting a song and music program in dementia care in nursing homes. Methods An explorative, qualitative study design was used. Focus groups were formed by 17 health care providers from 3 different nursing homes. These providers had experience implementing and using the “Gjenklang” (“reverberation”) song and music program especially developed for people with dementia. Focus group interviews were transcribed verbatim, and …
Modulation of Human Motor Cortical Excitability and Plasticity by Opuntia Ficus Indica Fruit Consumption: Evidence from a Preliminary Study through N…
2022
Indicaxanthin (IX) from Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) has been shown to exert numerous biological effects both in vitro and in vivo, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuro-modulatory activity in rodent models. Our goal was to investigate the eventual neuro-active role of orally assumed fruits containing high levels of IX at nutritionally-relevant amounts in healthy subjects, exploring cortical excitability and plasticity in the human motor cortex (M1). To this purpose, we applied paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation and anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) in basal conditions and followed the consumption of yellow cactus pear fruits containing IX or white ca…
