Associations of black carbon with lung function and airway inflammation in schoolchildren

2019

Background: Few studies have investigated the 24-hour respiratory health effects of personal black carbon (BC) and ultrafine particles (UFP) exposure in schoolchildren. The objective of this study was to investigate these associations with the lung function in children 10-years old with and without persistent respiratory symptoms. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 305 children (147 and 158 with and without persistent respiratory symptoms, respectively) from three European birth-cohorts: PARIS (France) and INMA Sabadell and Valencia (Spain). Personal 24-hour measurements of exposure concentrations to BC and UFP were performed by portable devices, before lung function testing. …

Use of hydroxychloroquine in hospitalised COVID-19 patients is associated with reduced mortality: Findings from the observational multicentre Italian…

2020

Abstract Background Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was proposed as potential treatment for COVID-19. Objective We set-up a multicenter Italian collaboration to investigate the relationship between HCQ therapy and COVID-19 in-hospital mortality. Methods In a retrospective observational study, 3,451 unselected patients hospitalized in 33 clinical centers in Italy, from February 19, 2020 to May 23, 2020, with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, were analyzed. The primary end-point in a time-to event analysis was in-hospital death, comparing patients who received HCQ with patients who did not. We used multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression models with inverse probability for treatme…

The endoscopic spectrum of segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis.

2010

Objective  An endoscopic classification of ‘Segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis’ (SCAD) is lacking. Our aim was therefore to assess the endoscopic spectrum of SCAD, comparing it with the histological and clinical features. Method  A prospective study was performed from January 2004 to October 2007. Diagnosis of SCAD was made on the basis of specific endoscopic and histological patterns. Results  A total of 6230 consecutive colonoscopies were performed during the study period. SCAD was diagnosed in 92 (1.48%) patients, with four endoscopic patterns: pattern A, ‘crescentic fold disease’ (52.20%); pattern B, ‘Mild-to moderate ulcerative colitis-like’ pattern (30.40%); pattern C, ‘…

Series of fibrinous inflammation after implantation of capsular tension rings

2014

Purpose To analyze the cause of fibrinous inflammation in eyes with capsular tension rings (CTRs) after cataract surgery. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Design Retrospective case series. Methods High-performance liquid chromatography was implemented to eliminate impurities. One CTR was explanted for microbiologic examination. The pH values of the CTR and the storage solution were analyzed, Seldi and Maldi tests were performed, as well as toxicity tests with immortal cell lines. Material batches were analyzed. The organic carbon content of CTRs, detergents, and storage solutions was checked. The presence of…

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIETARY INFLAMMATORY INDEX AND INCIDENT FRAILTY: A LONGITUDINAL COHORT STUDY

2017

Objective:\ud \ud Inflammation is key risk factor for several conditions in the elderly. However, the relationship between inflammation and frailty is still unclear. We investigated whether higher dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores were associated with higher incidence of frailty in a cohort of North Americans.\ud \ud Design:\ud \ud Longitudinal, with a follow-up of 8 years.\ud \ud Setting:\ud \ud Osteoarthritis Initiative.\ud \ud Participants:\ud \ud A total of 4421 participants with, or at high risk of, knee osteoarthritis.\ud \ud Measurements:\ud \ud DII scores were calculated using the validated Block Brief 2000 Food-Frequency Questionnaire and categorized into sex-specific quartil…

Heat shock protein 70 in patients with chronic heart failure: relation to disease severity and survival

2004

Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is essential for cellular recovery, survival and maintenance of cellular function. Research into the possible use of Hsp70 as a cytoprotective therapeutic agent is ongoing. Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a state associated with systemic inflammation, particularly in patients with cardiac cachexia. We hypothesised that circulating Hsp70 levels are elevated in patients with CHF, more so in cachechtic patients, and that Hsp70 levels would relate to mortality. We studied 107 patients (28 female, age 67+/-1 years, NYHA class 2.6+/-0.6 and LVEF 29+/-1%, mean+/-SEM) and 21 controls. Cardiac cachexia was present in 32 patients. Hsp70 was detectable in 41% of CHF patient…

When GLP-1 hits the liver: a novel approach for insulin resistance and NASH

2012

nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a spectrum ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis (NASH), increasing fibrosis and eventually, cirrhosis ([22][1]). Importantly, NASH accompanied by fibrosis and severe inflammation is the most relevant predictor for disease progression

Pro-inflammatory dietary pattern is associated with fractures in women: an eight-year longitudinal cohort study

2017

Summary: In this study, during 8 years of follow-up, we reported that higher dietary inflammatory index values were associated with a higher risk of incident fractures in women, but not in men, after adjusting for potential confounders. Introduction: Inflammation is a key risk factor for many adverse outcomes in older people. While diet is a potential source of inflammation, little is known about the impact of inflammatory diet on fractures. Thus, we investigated whether higher Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII)™ ® scores are associated with fractures in a cohort of North American people. Methods: This longitudinal study with a follow-up of 8 years included 3648 participants (1577 males and 2…

Assessment and grading of mucosal inflammation in colonic diverticular disease.

2008

Goal: The aim of this study was to assess and grade the mucosal inflammatory infiltrate in different degrees of diverticular disease (DID) and to compare them with healthy matched controls. Background: Mucosal inflammation in colonic DD has never been investigated. In particular, it is unknown whether inflammation may be found in every degree of DD. Materials and Methods: Thirty consecutive patients with a new endoscopic diagnosis of D-D (10 with asymptomatic diverticulosis, 10 with symptomatic uncomplicated DD, and 10 with acute uncomplicated diverticulitis) and 10 healthy controls were studied. Results: A neutrophilic inflammatory infiltrate was found only in acute uncomplicated diverticu…
