Precision Oliviculture: Research Topics, Challenges, and Opportunities—A Review

2022

Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been an increase in the agricultural area devoted to olive growing and in the consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The continuous change in cultivation techniques implemented poses new challenges to ensure environmental and economic sustainability. In this context, precision oliviculture (PO) is having an increasing scientific interest and impact on the sector. Its implementation depends on various technological developments: sensors for local and remote crop monitoring, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), equipment and machinery to perform site-specific management through variable rate application (VRA), implementation of g…

COVID-19, Cation Dysmetabolism, Sialic Acid, CD147, ACE2, Viroporins, Hepcidin and Ferroptosis: A Possible Unifying Hypothesis.

2022

Background: iron and calcium dysmetabolism, with hyperferritinemia, hypoferremia, hypocalcemia and anemia have been documented in the majority of COVID-19 patients at later/worse stages. Furthermore, complementary to ACE2, both sialic acid (SA) molecules and CD147 proved relevant host receptors for SARS-CoV-2 entry, which explains the viral attack to multiple types of cells, including erythrocytes, endothelium and neural tissue. Several authors advocated that cell ferroptosis may be the core and final cell degenerative mechanism. Methods: a literature research was performed in several scientific search engines, such as PubMed Central, Cochrane Library, Chemical Abstract Service. More than 5…

Photochemical genotoxicity: principles and test methods

2004

In recent years, assessing the photogenotoxic potential of a compound became an issue for certain drugs and cosmetical products. Therefore, existing methods performed according to international guidelines (e.g. OECD guidelines) were adapted to the use of concurrent UV-visible (UV-Vis) light irradiation for the assessment of photomutagenicity/photogenotoxicity. In this review, photobiological bases of the processes occurring in the cell after irradiation with UV- and/or visible (vis)-light as well as a compilation of testing methods is presented. Methods comprise cell free investigations on naked DNA and in vitro methods, such as the photo-Ames test, the photo-HPRT/photo-mouse lymphoma assay…

Prosocial and Aggressive Behavior Occurrence in Young Athletes: Field Research Results in Six European Countries

2020

Aggression and violence among youth are researched as social phenomena in sport. This paper was designed to determine the occurrence of these behaviors as well as prosocial behaviors among young athletes. The current paper is a research report aiming to detect the frequency of aggressive behavior, social exclusion, prosocial behavior and cohesion in the youth environment, the frequency of personal experience of peer violence or social exclusion, and to evaluate cross-national differences in terms of occurrence of these phenomena. The field research was conducted in six European countries (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Lithuania, and Serbia) on a sample of 482 children aged…

Photochemical sample treatment: a greener approach to chlorobenzene determination in sediments.

2014

Abstract Due to worker׳s exposure, solvent and stationary phases׳ consumption, sample purification is one of the most polluting steps in analytical procedures for determination of organic pollutants in real samples. The use of photochemical sample treatment represents a valid alternative methodology for extracts clean up allowing for a reduction of the used amount of organic solvents. In this paper we report the first application on the photolytic destruction of organic substances to eliminate some of the interferences in the analysis of Chlorobenzenes in sediment samples. The method׳s efficiency and robustness were compared with classic silica column purification process currently used in …

2009

COMPLESSI DEL GERMANIO TETRACLORURO CON BASI DI SCHIFF: SINTESI E CARATTERIZZAZIONE Alberta Fontana Dipartimento di Chimica Inorganica e Analitica S. Cannizzaro.

Molecular community and population studies of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota)

2014

The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, which appeared at the same time as land plants, 460 million years ago, is a mutualistic beneficial association between most land plants, including those cultivated, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). AMF, from the Glomeromycota phylum, are widespread soil microorganisms needing a photosynthetic host to complete their life cycle (obligate symbionts). The great potential of plant mineral nutrition improvement and crop production increased during this symbiosis, make AMF an asset in the context of an increase in the demand of world food crop production. The control of that symbiosis by ecology engineering in order to improve ecosystem services, especi…

Mapping of corrosion products of highly altered archeological iron using voltammetry of microparticles

2013

The application of the voltammetry of microparticles to identify corrosion products on different localizations of highly altered archeological iron pieces is described. The use of graphite pencil methodology permits to mapping different corrosion products, namely, akaganeite, goethite, hematite, jarosite, magnetite, maghemite and siderite, in iron artifacts. Identification protocols are based on square wave voltammetric measurements performed at sample-modified paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes immersed into aqueous HCl. This methodology is applied for mapping corrosion products on an Iberian Roman shield boss from the Torre la Sal archeological site (Oropesa, Spain) dated in the IVt…

Boosting the methanolysis of polycarbonate by the synergy between ultrasound irradiation and task specific ionic liquids

2021

In an attempt to perform polycarbonate chemical recycling in a more sustainable way, we took into consideration the combined use of ultrasound irradiation and task specific ionic liquids. Towards this aim, the methanolysis of polycarbonate, into dimethylcarbonate and bisphenol A, was carried out in the presence of cholinium-based ionic liquids featuring anions derived from amino acids and other eco-friendly species. The target process was optimized in terms of both energy and material amounts as well as in terms of the nature of the catalysts used. The proposed protocol allowed high conversion and yields of bisphenol A to be obtained, under milder conditions compared to the ones so far repo…
