Sex roles and the evolution of parental care specialization

Males and females are defined by the relative size of their gametes (anisogamy), but secondary sexual dimorphism in fertilization, parental investment and mating competition is widespread and often remarkably stable over evolutionary timescales. Recent theory has clarified the causal connections between anisogamy and the most prevalent differences between the sexes, but deviations from these patterns remain poorly understood. Stacking faults in close-packed clusters

Ground state geometries of small hard sphere clusters were studied using two different type of contact interaction, a pair-potential and a many-atom interaction. Monte Carlo method in an FCC lattice with all possible (111) stacking faults was used to obtain the minimum energy geometries for clusters up to 59 atoms. Due to the surface energy, FCC packing is generally favoured as opposite to the HCP structure. However, in most cluster sizes the ground state obtained with the many-atom interaction has one or more stacking faults. The most symmetric geometry is usually not the ground state. Characterization of MEMS accelerometer self-noise by means of PSD and Allan Variance analysis

In this paper, we have studied the sources of error of a low-cost 3-axis MEMS accelerometer by means of Power Spectral Density and Allan Variance techniques. These techniques were applied to the signals acquired from ten identical devices to characterize the variability of the sensor produced by the same manufacturer. Our analysis showed as identically produced accelerometer have somehow variable behavior in particular at low frequency. It is therefore of paramount importance before their use in Inertial Navigation or Earthquakes Monitoring System, a complete characterization of each single sensors.

Their accurate modeling relies on the correct description of the change of nuclear binding energy with deformation. Properties of nuclei in the nobelium region studied within the covariant, Skyrme, and Gogny energy density functionals

We calculate properties of the ground and excited states of nuclei in the nobelium region for proton and neutron numbers of 92 <= Z <= 104 and 144 <= N <= 156, respectively. We use three different energy-density-functional (EDF) approaches, based on covariant, Skyrme, and Gogny functionals, each within two different parameter sets. A comparative analysis of the results obtained for odd-even mass staggerings, quasiparticle spectra, and moments of inertia allows us to identify single-particle and shell effects that are characteristic to these different models and to illustrate possible systematic uncertainties related to using the EDF modelling

Identification of theg92proton and neutron band crossing in theN=ZnucleusSr76

High-spin states in $^{76}\mathrm{Sr}$ have been studied using Gammasphere plus Microball detector arrays. The known yrast band has been extended beyond the first band crossing, which involves the simultaneous alignment of pairs of ${\mathrm{g}}_{\frac{9}{2}}$ protons and neutrons, to a tentative spin of $24\ensuremath{\hbar}$. The data are compared with the results of cranked relativistic mean-field (CRMF) and cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations. The properties of the band, including the ${\mathrm{g}}_{\frac{9}{2}}$ proton/neutron band crossing frequency and moments of inertia, are found to be well reproduced by the CRHB calculations. Anomalous Behavior of High-Spin States inCm248

The ground-state band of $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ has been studied up to spin ${28}^{+}$ and tentatively to ${30}^{+}$ by observing $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays following multiple Coulomb excitation with use of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ ions at 5.3 MeV/u. A smooth, gradual increase in the effective moment of inertia is seen at lower spin with an anomalous forward bend above spin ${22}^{+}$. Calculations are presented which indicate that this behavior including the forward bend can be understood in terms of the alignment of single-particle angular momenta along the rotation axis.

Variable masses in fission and heavy-ion collisions

With the use of the cranking formula, the coordinate-dependent mass parameters of the kinetic-energy operator in fission processes and heavy-ion collisions are calculated in the two-center oscillator model. It is shown that the reduced mass and also the classical moment of inertia are obtained for large separations of the fragments. For small separations, however, the mass parameter for the motion of the centers of mass of the fragments is larger than the reduced mass by an order of magnitude.
