Summary: Based on recent findings indicating suppression of lymphocytic functions by seminal plasma (SP) we tested the effects of SP from men with normo- and oligozoospermia (n = 7, each) on the generation of luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and monocytes (Mo) stimulated in vitro with zymosan. We found a complete suppression of CL of PMN and Mo by undiluted SP's, 1,000-fold dilutions still induced ≥ 20 percent inhibition. There was no difference between normo- and oligozoospermic men in inhibition of CL both with PMN and Mo. Changes in histone acetylation in the prefrontal cortex of ethanol-exposed adolescent rats are associated with ethanol-induced place conditioning

Alcohol drinking during adolescence can induce long-lasting effects on the motivation to consume alcohol. Abnormal plasticity in reward-related processes might contribute to the vulnerability of adolescents to drug addiction. We have shown that binge-like ethanol treatment in adolescent rats induces alterations in the dopaminergic system and causes histone modifications in brain reward regions. Differential inhibition of biphenyl hydroxylation in perfused rat liver

A differential inhibition of biphenyl hydroxylation by alpha-naphthoflavone and metyrapone was observed in isolated perfused rat liver. alpha-Naphthoflavone inhibited 2- and 4-hydroxylation in livers from beta-naphthoflavone-pretreated animals but had no effect on both reactions in livers from phenobarbital-pretreated animals. Metyrapone inhibited 2- and 4-hydroxylation in phenobarbital-stimulated livers, but only insignificant inhibition of 2-hydroxylation and a slight enhancement of 4-hydroxylation by metyrapone was observed in beta-naphthoflavone-stimulated livers. Temporal patterns in immune responses to a range of microbial insults (Tenebrio molitor).

However, the temporal nature of these responses with respect to different immune insults is less well understood. This study investigated the magnitude and temporal variation in phenoloxidase and antimicrobial activity in the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor in response to a number of different synthetic and real immune elicitors. We found that antimicrobial activity in haemolymph increased rapidly during the first 48h after a challenge and was maintained at high levels for at least 14 days. Hyphal development in Candida albicans was selectively blocked by the ornithine decarboxylase competitive inhibitor 1,4-diaminobutanone (DAB). Inhibition of hyphal development required DAB during both yeast inoculum growth and subsequent incubation at 37 degrees C to induce mycelial growth. This effect was not due to general growth inhibition since DAB did not inhibit yeast growth, and reduced protein synthesis by 30% at most. Moreover, protein synthesis was unaffected by DAB when cells were pre-grown in drug-containing media. Establishment and characterization of a nontumorigenic cell line derived from a human hepatocellular adenoma expressing hepatocyte-specific markers.

In the present study the establishment and characterization of a nontumorigenic liver epithelial cell line (HACL-1) derived from a human hepatocellular adenoma is described. The HACL-1 cells have a finite life span (i.e., they proliferate for a period of 2 months and then senesce), show cell-cell contact inhibition, do not grow in soft agar, are not tumorigenic when injected in nude mice, and possess a normal diploid karyotype. The cultured cells resemble hepatocytes, but exhibit some features of dedifferentiation. In Situ Characterization of Hfq Bacterial Amyloid: A Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Study

Hfq is a bacterial protein that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in Gram-negative bacteria. We have previously shown that Escherichia coli Hfq protein, and more precisely its C-terminal region (CTR), self-assembles into an amyloid-like structure in vitro. In the present work, we present evidence that Hfq unambiguously forms amyloid structures also in vivo. Taking into account the role of this protein in bacterial adaptation and virulence, our work opens possibilities to target Hfq amyloid self-assembly and cell location, with potential to block bacterial adaptation and treat infections. Comparison of Two Schizophyllum commune Strains in Production of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors and Antioxidants from Submerged Cultivation

In recent years, fungi have been recognized as producers of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, agents important for the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study aimed to examine the AChE inhibitory, the antioxidative and antibacterial activity of two different Schizophyllum commune strains that originated from Serbia (SRB) and Italy (IT). Submerged cultivation of grown mycelia (M) and fermentation broth (F) of ethanol (EtOH) and polysaccharide (PSH) extracts lasted for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days.
