Integrated analytical methodologies for the study of corrosion processes in archaeological bronzes
2011
Abstract The investigations on structure and micro-chemical composition of archaeological metal alloys are needed in archaeometry. The aim of this study is devoted both to acquire information about their provenance and production technology, and to improve our understanding about the corrosion processes. In this paper we present the study of the corrosion phenomena of bronze samples, laboratory-made according to binary, ternary and quaternary alloys typical of Roman archaeometallurgical production through an integrated methodology based on the use of non or micro invasive physical techniques. Among the analysed samples, two were artificially aged through burial in the archaeological site of…
0.48Tb/s (12x40Gb/s) WDM transmission and high-quality thermo-optic switching in dielectric loaded plasmonics
2012
We demonstrate Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)-enabled transmission of 480Gb/s aggregate data traffic (12x40Gb/s) as well as high-quality 1x2 thermo-optic tuning in Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides (DLSPPWs). The WDM transmission characteristics have been verified through BER measurements by exploiting the heterointegration of a 60 mu m-long straight DLSPPW on a Silicon-on-Insulator waveguide platform, showing error-free performance for six out of the twelve channels. High-quality thermo-optic tuning has been achieved by utilizing Cycloaliphatic-Acrylate-Polymer as an efficient thermo-optic polymer loading employed in a dual-resonator DLSPPW switching structure, …
Colloidal Quantum Dot Integrated Light Sources for Plasmon Mediated Photonic Waveguide Excitation
2016
We operate micron-sized CdSe/CdS core–shell quantum dot (QD) clusters deposited onto gold patches as integrated light sources for the excitation of photonic waveguides. The surface plasmon mode launched by the QD fluorescence at the top interface of the gold patches are efficiently coupled to photonic modes sustained by titanium dioxide ridge waveguides. We show that, despite a large effective index difference, the plasmonic and the photonic modes can couple with a very high efficiency provided the vertical offset between the two kinds of waveguides is carefully controlled. Based on the effective index contrast of the plasmonic and the photonic modes, we engineer in-plane integrated hybrid …
ePTFE functionalization for medical applications
2021
Abstract Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a ubiquitous material used in implants and medical devices in general due to its high biocompatibility and inertness; blood vessels, heart, jawbone, nose, eyes, or abdominal wall can benefit from its properties in the case of disease or injury. Its expanded version, ePTFE, is an improved version of PTFE with better mechanical properties, which extend its medical applications. However, ePTFE implants often lack improvement in properties such as antibacterial, antistenosis, or tissue integration properties. Improvements in these properties by several strategies of functionalization for medical purposes are discussed in this review. Covalent and non-c…
A monte carlo study of dose rate distribution around the specially asymmetric CSM3-a 137Cs source.
2001
The CSM3 137Cs type stainless-steel encapsulated source is widely used in manually afterloaded low dose rate brachytherapy. A specially asymmetric source, CSM3-a, has been designed by CIS Bio International (France) substituting the eyelet side seed with an inactive material in the CSM3 source. This modification has been done in order to allow a uniform dose level over the upper vaginal surface when this `linear' source is inserted at the top of the dome vaginal applicators. In this study the Monte Carlo GEANT3 simulation code, incorporating the source geometry in detail, was used to investigate the dosimetric characteristics of this special CSM3-a 137Cs brachytherapy source. The absolute do…
Photovoltaic facade: Comparison of actual technologies
2017
This article aims to establish the economic contribution of a photovoltaic system placed on a façade of a building, replacing traditional elements such as windows and glass-cement walls with active elements. The aim is to compare the behavior of next-generation systems, which favor architectonical integration, with traditional ones. Two novel systems have been taken into account: a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and blue and grey thin film silicon panels. Different generation systems have been tested and compared in terms of efficiency and fill factor.
10 Gb/s transmission and thermo-optic resonance tuning in silicon-plasmonic waveguide platform
2011
The first system-level experimental results of hybrid Si-DLSPP structures incorporated into a SOI chip are reported. We demonstrate over 7nm thermo-optical tuning of a Si-Plasmonic racetrack-resonator and verify error-free 10Gb/s transmission through 60um Si-Plasmonic waveguide.
Additive Manufacturing of Multi‐Scale Porous Soft Tissue Implants That Encourage Vascularization and Tissue Ingrowth
2021
Medical devices, such as silicone-based prostheses designed for soft tissue implantation, often induce a suboptimal foreign-body response which results in a hardened avascular fibrotic capsule around the device, often leading to patient discomfort or implant failure. Here, it is proposed that additive manufacturing techniques can be used to deposit durable coatings with multiscale porosity on soft tissue implant surfaces to promote optimal tissue integration. Specifically, the “liquid rope coil effect”, is exploited via direct ink writing, to create a controlled macro open-pore architecture, including over highly curved surfaces, while adapting atomizing spray deposition of a silicone ink t…
Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells for Building Integration and Tandem Photovoltaics: Design Strategies and Challenges
2021
Over the past decade, halide perovskite systems have captured widespread attention among researchers since their exceptional photovoltaic (PV) performance was disclosed. The unique combination of optoelectronic properties and solution processability shown by these materials has enabled perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to reach efficiencies higher than 25% at low fabrication costs. Moreover, PSCs display enormous potential for modern unconventional PV applications, since they can be made lightweight, semitransparent (ST), and/or flexible by means of appropriate design strategies. In particular, by enabling transparency and high efficiency simultaneously, ST-PSCs hold great promise for future ve…
