A Survey on Nature-Inspired Medical Image Analysis: A Step Further in Biomedical Data Integration
2019
Natural phenomena and mechanisms have always intrigued humans, inspiring the design of effective solutions for real-world problems. Indeed, fascinating processes occur in nature, giving rise to an ever-increasing scientific interest. In everyday life, the amount of heterogeneous biomedical data is increasing more and more thanks to the advances in image acquisition modalities and high-throughput technologies. The automated analysis of these large-scale datasets creates new compelling challenges for data-driven and model-based computational methods. The application of intelligent algorithms, which mimic natural phenomena, is emerging as an effective paradigm for tackling complex problems, by…
Counterdiabatic vortex pump in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates
2017
Topological phase imprinting is a well-established technique for deterministic vortex creation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali metal atoms. It was recently shown that counter-diabatic quantum control may accelerate vortex creation in comparison to the standard adiabatic protocol and suppress the atom loss due to nonadiabatic transitions. Here we apply this technique, assisted by an optical plug, for vortex pumping to theoretically show that sequential phase imprinting up to 20 cycles generates a vortex with a very large winding number. Our method significantly increases the fidelity of the pump for rapid pumping compared to the case without the counter-diabatic control, leadin…
Indefinite integrals of products of special functions
2016
ABSTRACTA method is given for deriving indefinite integrals involving squares and other products of functions which are solutions of second-order linear differential equations. Several variations of the method are presented, which applies directly to functions which obey homogeneous differential equations. However, functions which obey inhomogeneous equations can be incorporated into the products and examples are given of integrals involving products of Bessel functions combined with Lommel, Anger and Weber functions. Many new integrals are derived for a selection of special functions, including Bessel functions, associated Legendre functions, and elliptic integrals. A number of integrals o…
A quantum mechanics-molecular mechanics study of dissociative electron transfer : The methylchloride radical anion in aqueous solution
2002
The dissociative electron transfer reaction CH3Cl+e−→CH3•+Cl− in aqueous solution is studied by using a QM/MM method. In this work the quantum subsystem (a methylchloride molecule plus an electron) is described using density functional theory while the solvent (300 water molecules) is described using the TIP3P classical potential. By means of molecular dynamics simulations and the thermodynamic integration technique we obtained the potential of mean force (PMF) for the carbon–chlorine bond dissociation of the neutral and radical anion species. Combining these two free energy curves we found a quadratic dependence of the activation free energy on the reaction free energy in agreement with Ma…
Methodological advances in brain connectivity
2012
Determining how distinct neurons or brain regions are connected and communicate with each other is a crucial point in neuroscience, as it allows to investigate how the functional integration of specialized neural populations enables the emergence of coherent cognitive and behavioral states. The general concept of brain connectivity encompasses different aspects: structural connectivity is related to the description of anatomical pathways and synaptic connections; functional connectivity investigates statistical dependencies between spatially separated brain regions; effective connectivity refers to models aimed at elucidating driver-response relationships. The study of these different modes…
Thermal sensation and cell adaptability
2013
Whole person adaptive comfort is discussed with reference to recent findings in molecular scale systems biology. The observations are upscaled to hypotheses relating to less traditional interpretations of thermal processes, which have new implications for indoor climate management and design. Arguments are presented for a revision of current focus, model and paradigm. The issue is seen as a problem of integrating theoretical development, conceptual modeling and as an investigation of the extent to which environments and acclimatization can be used to achieve individual fitness and health, not only at the subjective comfort level, as hitherto promoted. It is argued that there are many questi…
The Southern African Development Community (SADC): An Analytical Overview of Its History, Policies and Institutional Framework
2017
This chapter gives fundamental background information about the history and development of regionalism in Southern Africa and about the current state of the SADC as a modern regional integration organisation. In terms of an analytical overview, Muntschick reflects briefly on the formation, character and objectives of the region’s old regionalisms such as the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), the Frontline States (FLS) and particularly the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) as predecessors of the SADC. Also, this chapter turns to the new regionalism and provides detailed information on the SADC as an organisation, its member states, key agenda and central poli…
Sylvén, L. K. (2019). Investigating Content and Language Integrated Learning. Insights from Swedish High Schools. Bristol, UK: Multilingual Matters
2019
This volume presents a three-year research project on Content and Language Integration in Swedish Schools (CLISS). CLISS particularly focused on sciences and economics programs in senior high schools (Grades 10-12; 245 participants), which intended to prepare students for higher education. Divided into five sections, the book explores the language, rather than content, side of CLIL. The volume starts with background information concerning CLISS and CLIL in Sweden. The following four sections of the book concern assessment and motivation (Chapters 4-5); English vocabulary, reading comprehension and exposure to English (Chapters 6-9); students’ L1 proficiency and development through CLIL (Cha…
Power Grid Integration and Use-Case Study of Acid-Base Flow Battery Technology
2021
There are many different types of energy storage systems (ESS) available and the functionality that they can provide is extensive. However, each of these solutions come with their own set of drawbacks. The acid-base flow battery (ABFB) technology aims to provide a route to a cheap, clean and safe ESS by means of providing a new kind of energy storage technology based on reversible dissociation of water via bipolar electrodialysis. First, the main characteristics of the ABFB technology are described briefly to highlight its main advantages and drawbacks and define the most-competitive use-case scenarios in which the technology could be applied, as well as analyze the particular characteristi…
