Intrinsic defects induced by β-irradiation in silica

We report an electron paramagnetic resonance study of defects induced by β-irradiation in natural and synthetic samples of high purity commercial silica. Data are collected for the E′ centers and a resonance satellite signal split by 1.36 mT. By comparison with the effects of γ-irradiation it is shown that the mechanisms of defect generation are the same for the two irradiation sources and that in the high-dose limit they involve intrinsic defects of the glassy matrix. Moreover, the high concentration of defects generated by β-irradiation modifies the EPR spectrum due to spin–spin interaction.

Helical Tomotherapy® is a safe and feasible technique for total scalp irradiation

Angiosarcoma of the scalp is a rare aggressive tumor that affects elderly patients. Chemoradiation is the treatment of choice for multicentric and extensive disease. The shape of the scalp represents a dosimetric challenge in terms of achieving a homogeneous concave dose distribution with coverage of the entire target volume and an acceptable organs-at-risk sparing. We report a case of an 81-year-old man with a multifocal angiosarcoma of the scalp treated with Helical TomoTherapy® (Accuray Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA) intensity modulated radiotherapy. This technique allows precise and daily verifiable coverage of the target keeping the dose to the organs at risk within the constraints.

Effects induced by 4.7 eV UV laser irradiation on pure silica core multimode optical fibers investigated by in situ optical absorption measurements

We investigated by in situ optical absorption measurements the effects induced by 4.7 eV UV laser irradiation on pure silica core optical fibers. Laser irradiation with 100 MWcm−2 laser intensity generates in the fiber E′ centers which partially decay after irradiation due to their reaction with diffusing H2. An absorption band peaked at 5.3 eV is observed to grow in the post-irradiation stage with a kinetics anti-correlated to the decay of the 5.8 eV band of the E′ centers. Optical Gating of Photosensitive Synthetic Ion Channels

4-oxo-4-(pyren-4-ylmethoxy) butanoic acid is used as a photolabile protecting group to show the optical gating of nanofluidic devices based on synthetic ion channels. The inner surface of the channels is decorated with monolayers of photolabile hydrophobic molecules that can be removed by irradiation, which leads to the generation of hydrophilic groups. This process can be exploited in the UV-light-triggered permselective transport of ionic species in aqueous solution through the channels. Influence of irradiation on the switching behavior in PZT thin films

Spatially nonuniform imprint behavior induced by X-ray synchrotron, electron and neutron irradiation has been investigated in sol–gel Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films. The analysis of the switching current data reveals the strong influence of irradiation on the switching current shape. The obtained effects have been explained as a result of acceleration of the bulk screening process induced by irradiation. It was shown that the spatial distribution of the internal bias field is determined by the domain structure existing during irradiation. Using ultrasound transmission velocity to analyse the mechanical properties of teeth after in vitro, in situ, and in vivo irradiation.

Ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) in isotropic material as a measure for the modulus of elasticity was correlated to mechanical properties. Changes in micromechanical properties of radiated teeth and influence of the oral cavity were to be evaluated nondestructively. UTV was measured in extracted teeth after 36 Gy and 62 Gy of in situ (enorally, with no contact to the oral cavity) and in vitro irradiation. Relative to controls, teeth subjected to 62 Gy in vivo showed higher UTV values for dentine and enamel. Synthesis of the New Ring System 2-Oxo-[1,4]oxazino[3,2-e]indole, Heteroanalogue of Angelicin

A convenient synthesis of the 2-oxo-[1,4]oxazino[3,2-e]indole ring system, an heteroanalogue of Angelicin, is reported. Our synthetic approach consisted of the annelation of the oxazine ring on the indole moiety using 4-amino-5-hydroxy indoles as building blocks. The antiproliferative activity of the new compounds either in the dark or under UVA irradiation was investigated.

A two-component model for the 2260cm−1 infrared absorption band in electron irradiated amorphous SiO2

Abstract We report an experimental study by infrared absorption (IR) measurements focused on the effects of electron irradiation in the dose range from 1.2 × 10 3  kGy to 5 × 10 6  kGy on the intrinsic band peaked at 2260 cm − 1 in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO 2 ) materials. This IR band is particularly relevant as it is assigned to an overtone of the strong asymmetric stretching vibration of Si–O–Si bridges and consequently it is intimately related to the Si–O–Si bond angle distribution. The addition of interleukin-2 to cyclophosphamide therapy can facilitate tumor growth of B16 melanoma.

The role of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on tumor growth of B16F10 melanoma cells was assessed in two sets of mice with different immune status: normal (immunocompetent) mice and immunodeficient mice. The two sets of animals were treated with cyclophosphamide (CY) or IL-2 alone or with a combined therapy of CY+IL-2. On days 6 and 10 after tumor cell injection, we evaluated the incidence of hepatic B16 melanoma metastases and the percentage of hepatic volume occupied by metastatic tissue.
