Informal language in English L2 writing: What are pupils taught from textbooks?

AbstractStudies show that intermediate and advanced learners of English overuse informal features in their academic writing, and researchers recommend that instructional material is developed to raise learners’ awareness of this overuse. In Norway, little research has been done on younger learners’ writing, and no previous study exists of how instructional material such as textbooks deal with informality. The present article investigates how all English textbooks published for lower secondary school under the current curriculum deal with informality in writing. This paper proposes a contrastive analysis of the interlanguage of L2 Italian learners belonging to the category of “unaccompanied foreign minorsˮ, with the same L1 but different levels of education. The profile of unaccompanied foreign minors is complex and sociolinguistically very peculiar, since it is characterized by the frequent coexistence of a plurilingual ability and a (very) low, or zero, level of education. The paper describes some specific textual learning activities developed for an L2 Italian initial literacy classroom and, in particular, for illiterate multilinguals (mostly unaccompanied foreign minors). The activities belong to an experimental proposal. It consists of a specific textual teaching module integrated with a second-language initial literacy course. Le strategie d’intercomprensione tra lingue affini soffrono spesso la piaga della stasi entro un perimetro di comprensione che mai si risolve in produzione, come a sottolineare che l’intercomprensione linguistica facilita la decodifica di un input linguistico presente nella L1 senza necessariamente implicare una ri-codifica o trans-codifca nella L2.

Il contributo si propone di presentare il progetto di tutoring scolastico coordinato dalla Scuola di Lingua italiana per Stranieri dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo dal 2007 ad oggi. L’intervento affronta il problema delle forme e del ruolo della valutazione e dell’autovalutazione nei percorsi di apprendimento linguistico rivolti a utenti bassamente scolarizzati, con particolare riferimento all’italiano lingua non materna.
