Comparing Performance of Ensemble-Based Machine Learning Algorithms to Identify Potential Obesity Risk Factors from Public Health Datasets

2021

Societal factors such as globalization, supermarket growth, rapid unplanned urbanization, sedentary lifestyle, economical distribution, and social position gradually develop behavioral risk factors in humans. Behavioral risk factors are unhealthy habits (consumption of tobacco and alcohol), improper diet (consumption of high calorific discretionary fast foods, sweet beverages), and physical inactivity. The behavioral risks may lead to physiological risks, body–energy imbalance. Obesity is one of the foremost lifestyle diseases that leads to other health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease (CVDs), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer, diabetes type II, hypertension, an…

Characteristics of Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Their Correlation with the Sex and Age of Patients in the Latvian Population

2009

Characteristics of Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Their Correlation with the Sex and Age of Patients in the Latvian Population Various cardiovascular risk factors (RFs) were determined in 773 out-patients (mean age 55.8 ± 14.5 years). Male individuals had a larger waist circumference (WC) than did female patients (99.1 ± 13.6 cm vs 93.3 ± 15.2 cm), higher diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (83.6 ± 9.6 mmHg vs 81.8 ± 9.6 mmHg), and higher levels of blood glucose (5.73 ± 1.4 mmol/L vs 5.49 ± 1.3 mmol/L) and triglycerides (TG) (1.89 ± 1.3 mmol/L vs 1.60 ± 1.0 mmol/L), but lower levels of total cholesterol (TC) (5.54 ± 1.2 mmol/L vs 5.79 ± 1.2 mmol/L) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-…

Diet to Reduce the Metabolic Syndrome Associated with Menopause. The Logic for Olive Oil

2020

The rates of metabolic syndrome are increasing in parallel with the increasing prevalence of obesity, primarily due to its concomitant insulin resistance. This is particularly concerning for women, as the years around menopause are accompanied by an increase in visceral obesity, a strong determinant of insulin resistance. A fall in estrogens and increase in the androgen/estrogen ratio is attributed a determining role in this process, which has been confirmed in other physiological models, such as polycystic ovary syndrome. A healthy lifestyle, with special emphasis on nutrition, has been recommended as a first-line strategy in consensuses and guidelines. A consistent body of evidence has ac…

Gender differences in the battle against COVID‐19: Impact of genetics, comorbidities, inflammation and lifestyle on differences in outcomes

2020

Abstract It has been over six months now since the entire globe was struck by the new Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19; aka severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS‐CoV‐2]), which has affected 215 nations. The medical and scientific communities continue to search for and study potential treatments for COVID‐19 as well as an effective vaccine. As of 21 June 2020, 11.4 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, with approximately 530,000 deaths. A large number of scientific papers have been produced, hundreds of thousands of patients have been hospitalized and studied, several treatments and vaccines are being tested in randomized clinical trials, social distancing regulation…

Uztura izvēles veidošanās pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem kā veselīga dzīvesveida elementi

2019

Bakalaura darbs izstrādāts par tēmu “Uztura izvēles veidošanās pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem kā veselīga dzīvesveida elements”. Ielikt pamatus bērnu veselīgam dzīvesveidam- svarīgs pedagogu uzdevums. Tomēr šī uzdevuma izpildi kavē pedagoģiskās sistēmas attīstības nepietiekamība, vides un resursu nepietiekamība, ar kuriem nodrošināt veselīga dzīves veida pamatus. Nepietiekama uzmanība veltīta pedagogu darba plānošanai, savstarpējai sadarbībai ar ģimenēm. Lai veidotu veselīga dzīves veida pamatus, pieaugušo lomas realizācija šajā procesā ļoti nepieciešama. Pētījuma mērķis ir pētīt pirmsskolas vidēja vecuma bērnus veselīga dzīvesveida izpratnes veidošanas pirmsskolas pedagoģiskajā procesā. Pētīju…

An Automatic Ontology-Based Approach to Support Logical Representation of Observable and Measurable Data for Healthy Lifestyle Management: Proof-of-C…

2020

Background Lifestyle diseases, because of adverse health behavior, are the foremost cause of death worldwide. An eCoach system may encourage individuals to lead a healthy lifestyle with early health risk prediction, personalized recommendation generation, and goal evaluation. Such an eCoach system needs to collect and transform distributed heterogenous health and wellness data into meaningful information to train an artificially intelligent health risk prediction model. However, it may produce a data compatibility dilemma. Our proposed eHealth ontology can increase interoperability between different heterogeneous networks, provide situation awareness, help in data integration, and discover…

Health Promotion in Sport Coaching: Coaches and Young Male Athletes’ Evaluations on the Health Promotion Activity of Coaches

2015

Sport coaches have paradoxical attitudes towards addressing health promotion as a part of their coaching practice: health is recognized as an important factor, but not greatly invested in. Overall, the extent to which youth sport coaches take health promotion into account has been unclear. Therefore, it is the intention of this study to clarify this situation. The results show that coaches evaluate their own activity on health promotion as being relatively active, whereas young male athletes' evaluations reveal a wide gap in how they perceived the coaches' activity. Young male athletes perceived their coaches as being substantially more passive in comparison to coaches' self-evaluations. T…
