Teaching English through Arts in upper secondary school : a photographic teaching material package
2017
Lukion opetussuunnitelma uudistui vuonna 2015. Uudistuneessa OPS:ssa kannustetaan oppiainerajat ylittävään laaja-alaiseen oppimiseen. Tämä tarjoaa uusia ja mielenkiintoisia lähestymistapoja kielenopettamiseen lukiossa. Tämä materiaalipaketti yhdistää kuvataiteen ja englannin kielen opettamisen valokuvauksen avulla. Valokuvia on tänä päivänä helppo ottaa, sillä lähes jokaisella on älypuhelin, johon on tavallisesti integroitu kamera. Kameran avulla oppilaat pääsevät toteuttamaan luovuuttaan, jota tällä hetkellä ei painoteta tarpeeksi opiskelussa. Valokuvaukseen pohjautuvan oppimateriaalipaketin peruspilarit ovat kommunikatiivisessa kielenopetuksessa, oppijakeskeisyydessä ja motivaation löytäm…
A fordítás és közvetítés változó szerepe az idegennyelv-oktatásban: a tudományos nézőpontok közeledése
2014
In multilingual and multicultural contexts, individuals who speak foreign languages but are not translation professionals increasingly engage in oral or written translation and language mediation activities both at the workplace and in everyday life. These formal or informal translational actions are connected to various formal or informal interactions for a variety of purposes, and are often done on an ad hoc basis. In applied linguistics, more and more authors emphasize that integrating translation with foreign language learning and teaching not only has a number of benefits related to language learning, but can serve more general educational purposes as well. Unfortunately, translation h…
Valuing Variability: Dynamic Usage-based Principles in the L2 Development of Four Finnish Language Learners
2020
The general aim of this study is to trace the second language (L2) development of four beginner learners of Finnish over one academic year from a dynamic usage-based perspective. Contrary to many previous studies, this study starts out from meanings, not forms. In other words, an onomasiological approach is adopted. The aim is to investigate what kind of constructions the learners use to express 1) evaluation and 2) existentiality. In line with a dynamic usage-based approach, the goal is to investigate three aspects of development: 1) the interaction between different linguistic means used to express a certain meaning and between the instruction and learning trajectories, 2) variability pat…
"Välillä mua on melkein itkettäny mennä luennolle" : advanced language learners' experiences with foreign language anxiety
2014

Language learning strategies and teaching practices in adult L2 education : The case of Swedish for Immigrants
2019
This article highlights the use and co-construction of language learning strategies (LLS) in second language education for adults with short previous education. In a case study, we explore how LLS are used and co-constructed by one student and one teacher. The data for the article was created in an action research programme comprising two Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) schools, and the methodology used was classroom observation based in linguistic ethnography. In accordance with Griffiths (2013, p. 15) LLS are defined as “activities consciously chosen by learners for the purpose of regulating their own language learning”. For the analysis of LLS, Oxford’s (1990) taxonomy was chosen. In the ch…
Fostering general and specific competences through online language learning materials
2011
This paper addresses how general and specific competences are dealt with and fostered through the Online First Certificate Course and Tester, designed by the CAMILLE Research Group in Spain. The debate and research on the role of competences is an ongoing issue within the field of higher education. Moreover, the new framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has made it more visible and has contributed towards designing and implementing new educational curricula based on a competence-based approach. Keywords: online language learning materials; planning; methodology; innovative approach
Feedback on individual academic presentations: exploring Finnish university students’ experiences and preferences
2015
With an increasing emphasis on measuring the outcomes of learning in higher education, assessment is gaining an ever more prominent role in curriculum design and development as well as in instructional practices. In formative assessment, feedback is regarded as a powerful pedagogical tool driving student engagement and deep learning. The efficacy of feedback, however, depends on a multitude of factors. From a learning cultures perspective (James 2014), assessment strives for an appropriate balance between structural constraints and individual agency. To have a better grasp of how feedback functions in practice, it is useful to investigate students’ views and preferences as well as the immed…
