Heuristics for a Real-World Mail Delivery Problem
2011
We are solving a mail delivery problem by combining exact and heuristic methods. The problem is a tactical routing problem as routes for all postpersons have to be planned in advance for a period of several months. As for many other routing problems, the task is to construct a set of feasible routes serving each customer exactly once at minimum cost. Four different modes (car, moped, bicycle, and walking) are available, but not all customers are accessible by all modes. Thus, the problem is characterized by three interdependent decisions: the clustering of customers into districts, the choice of a mode for each district, and the routing of the postperson through its district. We present a t…
Teaching and learning gross anatomy using modern electronic media based on the visible human project
2002
This article reviews online (Internet) anatomy projects and multimedia productions (books and CD-ROMs) based on the Visible Human Project (VHP) of the United States National Library of Medicine. The focus of these projects and productions is on the teaching of 3D anatomy using the digitized sections of the visible human male and female. The article also provides information about the VHP, its goals and what it has achieved thus far.
Classification of Actual Sensor Network Deployments in Research Studies from 2013 to 2017
2020
Technologies, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT), have captured the imagination of researchers, businesses, and general public, due to breakthroughs in embedded system development, sensing technologies, and ubiquitous connectivity in recent years. That resulted in the emergence of an enormous, difficult-to-navigate body of work related to WSN and IoT. In an ongoing research effort to highlight trends and developments in these technologies and to see whether they are actually deployed rather than subjects of theoretical research with presumed potential use cases, we gathered and codified a dataset of scientific publications from a five-year period from 2013 t…
Access to scientific information. A national survey of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (SIBioC).
2016
Abstract Background: Digital libraries are typically used for retrieving and accessing articles in academic journals and repositories. Previous studies have been published about the performance of various biomedical research platforms, but no information is available about access preferences. Methods: A six-question survey was designed by the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (SIBioC) using the platform Google Drive, and made available for 1 month to the members of the society. The information about the survey was published on the website of SIBioC and also disseminated by two sequential newsletters. Results: Overall, 165 replies were collected throughout the …
Avoimuudella on merkitystä! Kirjaston julkaisuyksikkö Jyväskylän yliopiston vaikuttavuuden edistäjänä
2012
Julkaisuyksikkö on toimintansa alusta alkaen tähdännyt Jyväskylän yliopiston näkyvyyden ja menestymisen sekä tieteen avoimuuden tukemiseen. Pekka Olsbo käy artikkelissaan läpi julkaisuyksikön toiminnan keskeisiä virstanpylväitä. Julkaisuyksikkö on vuosien saatossa vakiinnuttanut asemansa yliopiston keskeisenä palveluyksikkönä. Yliopistossa tuotettavien moninaisten digitaalisten aineistojen verkkojulkaisemisen myötä se myös jatkaa työtään kansallisen open access -työn eturintamassa. nonPeerReviewed

Enabling a culture for IT services; the role of the IT infrastructure library
2016
Building on process management and service climate theories, this paper investigates the pertinent issues of whether firms that implement ITIL best practices for IT service management will also experience growth in their process management activities and IT service climate. First, ITIL practices imply that processes in the IT department should be managed on a daily basis; without process management, ITIL will fail beyond its initial implementation. Second, two of the main reasons for adopting ITIL are to become a service-oriented organisation and to deliver IT services that meet business needs. Thus, we hypothesise that as the implementation status of ITIL increases, process management and …

KPD: An Investigation into the Usability of Knowledge Portal in DMAIC Knowledge Management
2016
Knowledge is considered as a resource that contributes an important role in the success of Six Sigma DMAIC methodology. However, knowledge resides brain of the individuals and exists in various forms and different places. This rise the problem of how to collect and share DMAIC knowledge everywhere all time. In this paper, we introduce a proposed Knowledge Portal named KPD that had been designed as a tool to manage DMAIC knowledge. Through the deployment of the Knowledge Portal, this paper aims at investigating its impacts on DMAIC execution based on experiments and appreciation of experts who are working in the areas of quality management and information technology. The results of the surve…
