Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: Results of the SPIN-UTI network

2018

Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to…

Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) position statement and guideline on the treatment of menopausal sleep disorders

2019

Insomnia, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and depression often co-occur after the menopause, with consequent health problems and reductions in quality of life. The aim of this position statement is to provide evidence-based advice on the management of postmenopausal sleep disorders derived from a systematic review of the literature. The latter yielded results on VMS, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Overall, the studies show that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) improves VMS, insomnia, and mood. Several antidepressants can improve insomnia, either on their own or in association with MHT; these include selective serotonin reuptake …

Forecasting Methodology for Qualification and Training Needs in France

1999

The present publication is the first outcome of the European project "Labouratory" which aims at elaborating forecasting methodology applicable in the transition countries of Central Europe. This paper takes stock of the labour market data and methods used to forecast education and training needs in France : at the national level, only one institute (BIPE) suggests a model for calculating recruitement needs according to professional categories ; on the sectoral level, roughly twenty professional branches carried out forecasting study contracts ; OREF Bourgogne works at the regional level with available data national statistics in composition with qualitative school and company surveys, broa…

A criterion for extending morphisms from open subsets of smooth fibrations of algebraic varieties

2021

Abstract Given a smooth morphism Y → S and a proper morphism P → S of algebraic varieties we give a sufficient condition for extending an S-morphism U → P , where U is an open subset of Y, to an S-morphism Y → P , analogous to Zariski's main theorem.

Experiences from Software Maintenance Seminars: Organizing Three Seminars with 127 Groups

2009

Software maintenance and evolution (SME) is an important but problematic topic-area for university-level computer science education. Seminars can be used to provide versatile and up-to-date knowledge for students regarding scientifically relevant issues. We have organized three systematic university-level seminars on SME with a total of 127 seminar groups. Each group has been assigned a task of analyzing one scientific SME-article. The main results include the general confirmed feasibility of the selected seminar-based approach. The paper describes the background of the seminars, their contents, and experiences concerning organization and feasibility of the seminars. The results support org…

Good moments in parents' spousal relationships: A daily relational maintenance perspective

2010

This study examined positively experienced spousal moments among couples with young children. The diary data were gathered from 95 women and 55 men in 95 Finnish families over a seven-day period using an open-ended question. Seven kinds of activities were identified in the descriptions of moments: doings, conversations, presence, positivity, physical intimacy, support, and conflict management. Doings related to shared tasks and favors as well as conversations concerning catching up and family issues were more often mentioned by women than by men. Notably, positive spousal moments also often included children who were described as a landscape for the spousal relationship, as participants in …

Defining the Process for Making Software System Modernization Decisions

2006

This paper outlines a process for software system modernization decisions. The rationale of the process is explained and the process is defined in a way that allows its adaptation for other organizations and situations. The process is a light-weight one and is based on the use of objective data. The procedures for collecting the data are explained. The process has been used to solve a real industrial decision making situation in which the process was successful.

Solunto: dalla conoscenza alla conservazione

2016

To the ancient city of Solunto (Santa Flavia-Palermo), only in the late Eighteenth century, begins a process of analysis aimed at its preservation, through protection and restoration, wh…

Molecular mechanisms of sorafenib action in liver cancer cells.

2012

Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor, recently received FDA approval for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, as the clinical application of sorafenib evolves, there is increasing interest in defining the mechanisms underlying its anti-tumor activity. Considering that this specific inhibitor could target unexpected molecules depending on the biologic context, a precise understanding of its mechanism of action could be critical to maximize its treatment efficacy, while minimizing adverse effects. Two human HCC cell lines (HepG2 and Huh7), carrying different biological and genetic characteristics, were used in this study to examine the intracellular events leading …

Carl Sauer e gli ultimi lavori sul continente americano. The Early Spanish Main

2014
