Real-world evidence from a European cohort study of patients with treatment resistant depression: Baseline patient characteristics: Patient character…

2021

Background: Treatment resistant depression (TRD; failure to respond to ≥2 treatments) affects ~20% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Real-world data could help describe patient characteristics and TRD disease burden, to assess the unmet needs of TRD patients in Europe. Methods: This observational study collected data from adults with moderate to severe TRD initiating a new treatment for depression, according to local standards of care. At baseline, socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, prior and current treatments were recorded. Disease severity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), functionality and productivity were assessed. Results: Overall, 411 eligible…

A Hyaluronic acid-pentamidine bioconjugate as macrophage mediated drug targeting delivery system for the treatment of Leishmaniasis

2015

Leishmaniasis is still a serious public health problem worldwide, especially in tropical areas where this infectious disease is endemic. The most severe form of the disease (i.e. visceral) can claim victims if left untreated and the few accessible drugs have several drawbacks including major side effects and parenteral administration. In this context, the investigation of new delivery modalities which might reduce the toxicity and increase the bioavailability of the drugs currently on the market represents a valid strategy to counter these problems. Herein we present the development of a macrophage mediated drug targeting delivery system by conjugating the anti-leishmanial drug pentamidine …

Same work, lower grade? Student ethnicity and teachers’ subjective assessments

2010

Previous research shows that ethnic minority students perform poorer in school when they are taught by ethnic majority teachers. Why this is the case was unclear. This paper focuses on one important potential explanation: I examine whether ethnic majority teachers grade minority and majority students differently for the same work. Using an experiment, I rule out the existence of such a direct grading bias. I do find indirect evidence for alternative explanations: teachers report lower expectations and unfavorable attitudes that both likely affect their behavior towards minority students, potentially inducing them to perform below their ability level. Effects of having majority teachers on m…

Los oficiales y subalternos de la Real Audiencia de Mallorca (1716-1808)

2019

The objective of this work is to know the organic structure of the officers and subordinates of the Royal Court of Majorca during the 18th century, which was the essence of the high judicial administration insular. Because of that, we approached through these relatively extensive professionals, with the description of their functions, who they were and how they obtained their charges. The article ends with an epilogue dedicated to the enlargement of the Royal Court with the creation of the second chamber during the reformist stage of Charles III to improve the high judicial administration insular.

Detection of Ventricular Fibrillation Using the Image from Time-Frequency Representation and Combined Classifiers without Feature Extraction

2018

Due the fact that the required therapy to treat Ventricular Fibrillation (V F) is aggressive (electric shock), the lack of a proper detection and recovering therapy could cause serious injuries to the patient or trigger a ventricular fibrillation, or even death. This work describes the development of an automatic diagnostic system for the detection of the occurrence of V F in real time by means of the time-frequency representation (T F R) image of the ECG. The main novelties are the use of the T F R image as input for a classification process, as well as the use of combined classifiers. The feature extraction stage is eliminated and, together with the use of specialized binary classifiers, …

U.I.R.D.A. – Unbuilt Italian Rationalism Digital Archive

2018

For twenty years, the architecture of Italian rationalism through the digital modelling has been investigated. Very often, the production of a model and the consequent representation of tridimensional views, in many case studies, as outcome of the research on architecture have been considered. Actually, the digital model, intended as a critical tool, has to be conceived as a ‘starting point' for graphic analysis of architecture and not as the outcome. Indeed, it is associated to other graphics, sometimes not ‘deducted' from the model, useful for the understanding/translation of architecture. The construction of the model is not the construction of a simple image, operation, which is often c…

Digital Archive: Cataloging of drawings obtained through the implementation of digital modeling software within a database that collects graphic elaborations acquired from archive drawings. Golden Ratio: Indicates the ratio between the two dimensions of which the major is the mean proportional between the minor and the sum of the two. Graphic Reading: Reading and understanding operation of an architecture through its decomposition into volumetric and geometric parts graphically expressed through an additional language. Harmonic Ratios: Geometric ratios between pure shapes traceable also in music that enable us to understand the spatial logic of drawn architecture. Hermeneutic Analysis: Interpretive approach adopted in the graphic analysis of an architecture drawing leading to the seeking of further key interpretations of the work itself. Redrawing: Graphic restitution of one or more archive drawings obtained by an interpretative practice of the project and expressed through the codes of representation that provide new information on architecture. Value of genetic and epigenetic testing as biomarkers of response to antidepressant treatment

2013

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent and disabling psychiatric disorders worldwide and therefore an important public health priority. The selection process of antidepressant treatment is primarily guided by trial and error, and the outcomes with current antidepressant strategies are disappointing. The biological background of the disease is heterogeneous with presumably multiple biological systems involved. With the aim to individualize antidepressant treatment, multiple candidate gene and a few genome-wide association studies have been performed, but so far with very limited success. To address the dynamic changes of depressive symptoms and their response to treatme…

Effects of Large-Scale Releases on the Genetic Structure of Red Sea Bream (Pagrus major, Temminck et Schlegel) Populations in Japan.

2014

Large-scale hatchery releases are carried out for many marine fish species worldwide; nevertheless, the long-term effects of this practice on the genetic structure of natural populations remains unclear. The lack of knowledge is especially evident when independent stock enhancement programs are conducted simultaneously on the same species at different geographical locations, as occurs with red sea bream (Pagrus major, Temminck et Schlegel) in Japan. In this study, we examined the putative effects of intensive offspring releases on the genetic structure of red sea bream populations along the Japanese archipelago by genotyping 848 fish at fifteen microsatellite loci. Our results suggests weak…

Brominated flame retardants and organochlorines in the European environment using great tit eggs as a biomonitoring tool

2009

Large-scale studies are essential to assess the emission patterns and spatial distribution of organohalogenated pollutants (OHPs) in the environment. Bird eggs have several advantages compared to other environmental media which have previously been used to map the distribution of OHPs. In this study, large-scale geographical variation in the occurrence of OHPs, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), was investigated throughout Europe using eggs of a terrestrial residential passerine species, the great tit (Parus major). Great tit eggs from 22 sampling sites, involving urban, rural and remote areas, in 14 Europea…
