Present research concerning the efficiacy of therapeutic strategies for squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and the oropharynx profits from former observational studies. The so-called retrospective German, Austrian, and Swiss Association for Head and Neck Tumors (DOSAK) study (Platz et al. 1986) served to review existing proposals for classification (UICC 1973, 1978; AJC 1978) and to develop a statistical classification which enables the head and neck oncologist to define prognostically homogeneous patient collectives. The treatment-dependent prognostic index (TPI) was the corresponding result (Platz et al. 1982).

The effects of E-64 (Cathepsin B and L inhibitor) and Pepstatin A (Cathepsin D inhibitor) on spontaneous and experimental metastasis formation were investigated in mice with MCa mammary carcinoma, M5076 ovarian sarcoma and L1210 leukemia. Pepstatin induced a marked decrease in the number of spontaneous metastasis in MCa or M5076 tumor bearing mice. This phenomenon was also noted with E-64 but only in M5076 tumor bearing mice. Mapping and quantification of biomolecules in tumor biopsies using bioluminescence

Quantitative bioluminescence and single-photon imaging have been applied for mapping concentration distributions of metabolites, such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), glucose and lactate, in biopsies of cervical cancers in patients. Biopsies were taken before a conventional radiation treatment, and a number of clinically relevant data, such as local tumor control, patient survival, metastatic spread and so forth, were documented. New cell lines of gastric and pancreatic cancer: distinct morphology, growth characteristics, expression of epithelial and immunoregulatory antigens.

Two new cell lines from stomach cancers and one from a pancreatic carcinoma are presented. MZ-GC-1 was established from a hepatic metastasis of a well differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-2 was derived from ascites induced by a poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-PC-1 originated from the pleural effusion of a moderately well differentiated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-1 cells were adherent and partially polarized, connected tightly via desmosomes. In contrast MZ-GC-2 cells consisted of slightly adherent or floating subpopulations and displayed no desmosomes. Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, squamous cell carcinoma and axillary metastasis.

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an aggressive form of oral leukoplakia with multifocal presentation, high rates of recurrence and malignant transformation. Although development of regional lymph node metastasis is relatively frequent in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, axillary metastasis is quite uncommon. This paper presents a case of a 64-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with PVL and developed five oral squamous cell carcinomas and later an axillary lymph node metastasis.

MMP-13 stimulates osteoclast differentiation and activation in tumour breast bone metastases

INTRODUCTION: The increased bone degradation in osteolytic metastases depends on stimulation of mature osteoclasts and on continuous differentiation of new pre-osteoclasts. Metalloproteinases (MMP)-13 is expressed in a broad range of primary malignant tumours and it is emerging as a novel biomarker. Recent data suggest a direct role of MMP-13 in dissolving bone matrix complementing the activity of MMP-9 and other enzymes.
