On the interpretability and computational reliability of frequency-domain Granger causality

2017

This Correspondence article is a comment which directly relates to the paper “A study of problems encountered in Granger causality analysis from a neuroscience perspective” (Stokes and Purdon, 2017). We agree that interpretation issues of Granger causality (GC) in neuroscience exist, partially due to the historically unfortunate use of the name “causality”, as described in previous literature. On the other hand, we think that Stokes and Purdon use a formulation of GC which is outdated (albeit still used) and do not fully account for the potential of the different frequency-domain versions of GC; in doing so, their paper dismisses GC measures based on a suboptimal use of them. Furthermore, s…

Revealing the pace of river landscape evolution during the Quaternary: recent developments in numerical dating methods

2016

During the last twenty years, several technical developments have considerably intensified the use of numerical dating methods for the Quaternary. The study of fluvial archives has greatly benefited from these enhancements, opening new dating horizons for a range of archives at distinct time scales and thereby providing new insights into previously unanswered questions. In this contribution, we separately present the state of the art of five numerical dating methods that are frequently used in the fluvial context: radiocarbon, Luminescence, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), 230Th/U and terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) dating. We focus on the major recent developments for each technique th…

Accelerating bioinformatics applications via emerging parallel computing systems [Guest editorial]

2015

The papers in this issue focus on advanced parallel computing systems for bioinformatics applications. This papers provide a forum to publish recent advances in the improvement of handling bioinformatics problems on emerging parallel computing systems. These systems can be characterized by exploiting different types of parallelism, including fine-grained versus coarse-grained and thread-level parallelism versus datalevel parallelism versus request-level parallelism. Hence, parallel computing systems based on multi- and many-core CPUs, many-core GPUs, vector processors, or FPGAs offer the promise to massively accelerate many bioinformatics algorithms and applications, ranging from computeint…

A Mosaic of Suburbs: The Historic Boroughs of Palermo

2013

Palermo suburbs have grown and developed at the expense of becoming isolated from other parts of the city. Ancient boroughs have been eradicated, alongside their urban identities. The challenges of a cosmopolitan and global world are felt even in middle-sized, fringe cities like Palermo, as its suburbs are forced to become tiles of an urban mosaic that is created by urban development. It is the duty of urban scholars to clarify and strengthen the relationships between these urban parts, and in the process restore the neglected notion of neighborhood. By overcoming the distinction between cities and urban sprawl, the controversial dispute may be resolved by urban scholars. Through historica…

Space and Light, Towards an Interactive Simulation of Lighting

2003

Preface

2023

This volume of Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) contains the post-proceedings of HELMeTO 2022, the fourth International Conference on Higher Education Learning Methodologies and Technologies Online, which took place during September 21–23, 2022 in Palermo, Italy. The conference was organized by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Palermo and by the Institute of Educational Technology of the National Research Council of Italy. The 2022 edition of HELMeTO also marked the return of the event in presence, as the previous two editions had been held entirely online due to the Covid-19 emergency

Experiment of Indoor Thermal Optimization of an Old Historic Building of Cluny through Digital Mock-up Simulation

2013

International audience; Improving energy efficiency is the first and most important step toward achieving sustainability in buildings. Buildings designed with sustainable solutions are usually energy-efficient because sustainable design is aimed at producing green buildings. In the case of historic buildings, however, this is quite challenging. Integrated building energy simulation programs have been used in various ways by building professionals to respond to these challenges and to improve building design with respect to sustainability. This poster presents a new approach toward optimizing thermal indoor energy using a digital mock-up simulation of a historical building to explore its pot…

Implementación del método del caso en la asignatura de Ingeniería de Procesos y Productos II del grado en Ingeniería Química

2021

[EN] In this work, the case method has been used in the subject Process and Product Engineering II, which belongs to the fourth course of the Chemical Engineering Degree of the Universitat de València. Different cases have been proposed in the classroom practices in order to students acquire the competences of the subject and improve the results of the exam. A rubric was designed to evaluate the cases which was accessible to the students. The cases were proposed in the exam, in particular, cases related to four lessons which are usually complicated to students and the results obtained for these cases were compared with the results obtained in the questions (presented in a theoretical way) o…

Utilización de Kahoot! en las clases teóricas de Anatomía Patológica: mejorando la motivación e interacción en la docencia virtual

2021

[EN] Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, education has had to adapt to online teaching, trying to preserve the essential student-teacher interaction. In this project we used the interactive tool Kahoot! in the theory lectures of Special Anatomical Pathology of the Degree in Medicine, which were fully taught online. The games consisted of questions about the lesson´s contents, to strengthen learning and self-evaluation. After playing Kahoot!, results were discussed to highlight important concepts and explain doubts. The perception of the students was evaluated through an online survey. The results indicate that using Kahoot! in the theory classes has been very satisfactory and has en…

La dimensión social del lenguaje como una oportunidad educativa para la promoción del diálogo intercultural en el aula de Educación Superior

2021

[EN] For some time, it has been considered the need to approach the educational experience to the student sociocultural reality in the context of a classroom in Higher Education. This need is even more evident in the context of international exchange programs, in which the main objective is precisely to provide a space for mutual enrichment between the student's culture of origin and the host culture. In this sense, the “Grup d’Acompanyament Lingüístic” (GRUPal) works to promote the intercultural dialogue that inevitably and spontaneously takes place in and outside the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to present a didactic intervention based on inclusion and cooperative exchange as w…
