Comparison between simulated and observed LHC beam backgrounds in the ATLAS experiment at E beam =4 TeV
2018
Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared qua…
Preliminary results for application of culture-independent molecular methods to olive brines bacterial communities.
2006
Transformation of green table olives requires a brining stage during which olives ferment. In naturally transformed olives, both flavour improvement and debittering are associated to fermentation. Because of brine features, naturally occurring bacteria and yeasts are progressively selected by the high salt concentration, low pH and phenolic compounds with antimicrobial activity. The establishment of an adequate fermenting microflora is essential to obtain a good and safe product; then, during transformation, control of chemical and microbiological parameters is crucial. Currently, microflora is periodically monitored by plate-counting of main groups. These routine analyses, however, don’t s…

Open science as a better gatekeeper for science and society: a perspective from neurolaw
2018
Results from cognitive neuroscience have been cited as evidence in courtrooms around the world, and their admissibility has been a challenge for the legal system. Unfortunately, the recent reproducibility crisis in cognitive neuroscience, showing that the published studies in cognitive neuroscience may not be as trustworthy as expected, has made the situation worse. Here we analysed how the irreproducible results in cognitive neuroscience literature could compromise the standards for admissibility of scientific evidence, and pointed out how the open science movement may help to alleviate these problems. We conclude that open science not only benefits the scientific community but also the le…
"The same thing over and over again in many different ways. " : case study about bilingual teaching methods in the Family Centre Klubíčko, Czech Repu…
2017
Opettajat haastateltiin pareina teemahaastattelun periaatteita noudattaen. Tutkimus analysoitiin sisällöanalyysin keinoin huomioiden myös tutkimuksen visuaalinen tutkimusmateriaali. Tulokset kertovat, kuinka opettajilla on käytössään monipuolinen joukko opetusmetodeja, …
Lisämateriaali julkaisuun: Genetic colour variation visible for predators and conspecifics is concealed from humans in a polymorphic moth
2022
The definition of colour polymorphism is intuitive: genetic variants express discretely-coloured phenotypes. This classification is however elusive as humans form subjective categories or ignore differences that cannot be seen by human eyes. We demonstrate an example of a ‘cryptic morph’ in a polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis), a phenomenon that may be common among well-studied species. We used pedigree data from nearly 20000 individuals to infer the inheritance of hindwing colouration. The evidence supports a single Mendelian locus with two alleles in males: WW and Wy produce the white and yy the yellow hindwing colour. The inheritance could not be resolved in females as thei…
Cluster and Periodic Calculations of the Ethene Protonation Reaction Catalyzed by theta-1 Zeolite: Influence of Method, Model Size, and Structural Co…
2001
The protonation of ethene by three different acid sites of theta-1 zeolite was theoretically studied to analyze the extent and relevance of the following aspects of heterogeneous catalysis: the local geometry of the Bronsted acid site in a particular zeolite, the size of the cluster used to model the catalyst, the degree of geometry relaxation around the active site, and the effects related to medium- and long-range interactions between the reaction site and its environment. It has been found that while the reaction energy is very sensitive to the local geometry of the site, the activation energy is mainly affected by the methodology used and by electrostatic effects on account of the carbo…

An interactive surrogate-based method for computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation
2019
Many disciplines involve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. Surrogate-based methods are commonly used in the literature to alleviate the computational cost. In this paper, we develop an interactive surrogate-based method called SURROGATE-ASF to solve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. This method employs preference information of a decision-maker. Numerical results demonstrate that SURROGATE-ASF efficiently provides preferred solutions for a decision-maker. It can handle different types of problems involving for example multimodal objective functions and nonconvex and/or disconnected Pareto frontiers. peerReviewed
