Implantation Strategy of the Atrial Dipole Impacts Atrial Sensing Performance of Single Lead VDD Pacemakers

2002

WIEGAND, U.K.H., et al.: Implantation Strategy of the Atrial Dipole Impacts Atrial Sensing Perfor-mance of Single Lead VDD Pacemakers. Intermittent atrial undersensing is observed in a considerable percentage of patients with single lead VDD pacemakers. Analyzing the 2-year data of the Saphir Multicenter Follow-Up Study, the authors investigated predictors for the occurrence of undersensing. The study included 194 patients with high degree AV block who received a VDD pacemaker system with an identical sensing amplifier. Placement strategy of the atrial dipole was left to the discretion of the implanting physician. At the final position, atrial potential amplitudes were measured during deep …

Results of the performance verification of the CoaguChek XS system.

2008

Abstract Background This is the first paper reporting a performance verification study of a point-of-care (POC) monitor for prothrombin time (PT) testing according to the requirements given in chapter 8 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17593:2007 standard “Clinical laboratory testing and in vitro medical devices — Requirements for in vitro monitoring systems for self-testing of oral anticoagulant therapy”. The monitor under investigation was the new CoaguChek XS system which is designed for use in patient self testing. Its detection principle is based on the amperometric measurement of the thrombin activity generated by starting the coagulation cascade using a rec…

Clinical evaluation of a wireless ECG sensor system for arrhythmia diagnostic purposes

2013

Accepted version of an article in the journal: Medical Engineering and Physics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.medengphy.2013.03.002 In a clinical study, a novel wireless electrocardiogram (ECG) recorder has been evaluated with regard to its ability to perform arrhythmia diagnostics. As the ECG recorder will detect a "non-standard" ECG signal, it has been necessary to compare those signals to "standard" ECG recording signals in order to evaluate the arrhythmia detection ability of the new system. Simultaneous recording of ECG signals from both the new wireless ECG recorder and a conventional Holter recorder was compared by two independent cardiology specia…

Economic evaluation of prolonged and enhanced ECG Holter monitoring in acute ischemic stroke patients

2019

Objective: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major cause for recurrent stroke, has severe impact on a patient's health and imposes a high economic burden for society. Current guidelines recommend 24 h ECG monitoring (standard-of-care, SoC) to detect AF after stroke to reduce the risk of future events. However, paroxysmal AF (PAF) is difficult to detect within this period as it occurs infrequently and unpredictably. In a randomized controlled trial (Find-AF(RANDOMISED)), prolonged and enhanced Holter ECG monitoring (EPM) revealed a significantly higher detection rate of AF compared to SoC, although its cost-effectiveness has not yet been investigated. Methods: Based on the data of FIND-AF(RANDOM…

Repeated sugammadex reversal of muscle relaxation during lumbar spine surgery with intraoperative neurophysiological multimodal monitoring

2016

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring during spine surgery is usually acomplished avoiding muscle relaxants. A case of intraoperative sugammadex partial reversal of the neuromuscular blockade allowing adequate monitoring during spine surgery is presented. A 38 year-old man was scheduled for discectomy and vertebral arthrodesis throughout anterior and posterior approaches. Anesthesia consisted of total intravenous anesthesia plus rocuronium. Intraoperatively monitoring was needed, and the muscle relaxant reverted twice with low dose sugammadex in order to obtain adequate responses. The doses of sugammadex used were conservatively selected (0.1 mg/kg boluses increases, total dose neede…

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of the Antidepressant Mirtazapine and Its N-Demethylated Metabolite in Human Serum

2004

Mirtazapine is a novel antidepressant that acts by enhancing serotonergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission. Because very little is known about serum concentrations in relation to clinical effects, the use of therapeutic drug monitoring is so far unclear. A rapid automated HPLC method with fluorescence detection was developed for routine quantification of mirtazapine and its demethylated metabolite N-desmethylmirtazapine in human serum. The precision of the method was suitable because the day-to-day (n = 7) coefficient of variation (CV) of mirtazapine was 9.8, 4.2, and 5.1% for concentrations of 10, 40, and 80 ng/mL, respectively, and the CV for N-desmethylmirtazapine were 11.6, 10.3, and…

External and internal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) among workers in the production of fire-proof materials – Proposal of a biol…

2006

In 1999, we introduced the German polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) study. The study was designed as a nation-wide investigation on workers exposed to PAH. One aim of the study was to establish biological monitoring guidance values (BMGVs) for different branches. Here, we report on the production of fire-proof materials. This branch of industry is typically confronted with high exposure to PAH and with PAH-induced occupational (cancer) diseases. One hundred and thirty-five employees participated in the course of seven sampling dates in four different plants in Germany. External exposure was determined by personal air monitoring of the 16 EPA-PAH. Human biological monitoring was accompl…

Exposure to non-persistent pesticides in the Spanish population using biomonitoring: A review

2021

Abstract Although Spain does not have a regular national human biomonitoring program yet, different research groups are active in evaluating the exposure of children and adults to chemicals. In the last seven years, several studies in Spain have evaluated the internal exposure of the population to currently used pesticides. The present review analyzes the scope of these studies, the employed analytical methods and the main results of the exposure and risk, mainly for children and mothers. The frequency of exposure to biomarkers of exposure to organophosphate pesticides is high. Some non-specific dialkyl phosphate metabolites (DAPs), such as the diethyl phosphate (DEP), present Detection Fre…

Biomonitoring of bisphenols A, F, S in human milk and probabilistic risk assessment for breastfed infants

2019

The present study addresses the presence of bisphenols A (BPA) and its analogs bisphenol F (BPF) and S (BPS) in milk of 120 mothers living in Valencia (Spain) and participating in the BETTERMILK project (year 2015). We also studied the factors that could influence the BPA levels and estimated the exposure and the risk for breast fed infants. The frequency of detection of total (conjugated + unconjugated) and unconjugated-BPA were 83% and 77%. with a geometric mean of 0.29 ng/mL and 0.15 ng/mL, respectively. The frequency of detection was much lower for total-BPF (22%) and total-BPS (1.1%). The place of residence of the mother and the use of personal care products showed significant associat…

Recombinant hirudin as a periprocedural antithrombotic in coronary angioplasty for unstable angina pectoris

1996

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is often complicated by thrombotic abrupt vessel closure in patients with unstable angina pectoris. The present multicentre trial was performed to determine the feasibility of two-dose regimens of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) compared to standard heparin in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty for unstable angina, and to investigate the effects of the different treatment regimen on markers of coagulation activation. At five participating centres, 61 patients were randomly enrolled in one of two sequential groups of r-hirudin (group 1: 0.3 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.12 mg.kg-1.h-1 i.v. infusion; 21 patients; group 2: 0.5 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.…
