A statistical monitoring approach for automotive on-board diagnostic systems
2007
The current generation of vehicle models are increasingly being equipped with on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems aimed at assessing the ‘state of health’ of important anti-pollution subsystems and components. In order to promptly diagnose and fix quality and reliability problems that may potentially affect such complex diagnostic systems, even during advanced development prior to mass production, some vehicle prototypes undergo a testing phase under realistic conditions of use (a mileage accumulation campaign). The aim of this work is to set up a statistical tool for improving the reliability of the OBD system by monitoring its operation during the mileage accumulation campaign of a new vehi…
Clean and ordered surfaces of CeNi 2 Ge 2 layers on W(110)
1997
Investigations of the geometric and electronic properties of ternary Ce-based heavy fermion systems CeT2X2 (T : Ni,Pd,Rh; X : Ge,Si) were carried out by means of electron spectroscopic methods. The main problem for these surface-sensitive techniques is the preparation of well-ordered and atomically clean surfaces. The ternary substance CeNi2Ge2 was grown on a W(110) substrate by MBE with subsequent annealing. A nearly layer-by-layer growth mode was detected using MEED. The annealed layers are ordered, but show small Ni2Ge crystalline islands. The composition was characterised by means of AES in dependence of the substrate as well as the annealing temperature. Electronic properties are inves…
Box 5: Surface Crystallography Terminology
2009
The crystalline nature of the surface differs from the bulk because atoms on the surface experience a different force field due to unterminated bonds, oxidation by adatoms etc. [1]. Free energy minimisation leads to reconstruction of the surface layer from the bulk by formation of dimers and displacement of atoms from their normal sites.
Mott transitions in ternary flavor mixtures of ultracold fermions on optical lattices
2009
Ternary flavor mixtures of ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice are studied in the case of equal, repulsive on-site interactions U>0. The corresponding SU(3) invariant Hubbard model is solved numerically exactly within dynamical mean-field theory using multigrid Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We establish Mott transitions close to integer filling at low temperatures and show that the associated signatures in the compressibility and pair occupancy persist to high temperatures, i.e., should be accessible to experiments. In addition, we present spectral functions and discuss the properties of a ``semi-compressible'' state observed for large U near half filling.
Generation of Non-Classical States through QND-like Processes
2007
In the spirit of quantum nondemolition measurement we show that repeatedly measuring the atomic state of a trapped ion subjected to suitable vibronic couplings it is possible to extract interesting nonclassical states. The possibility of generating angular momentum Schrödinger cat is demonstrated.
Making Floryr–Huggins Practical: Thermodynamics of Polymer-Containing Mixtures
2010
The theoretical part of this article demonstrates how the original Flory–Huggins theory can be extended to describe the thermodynamic behavior of polymer-containing mixtures quantitatively. This progress is achieved by accounting for two features of macromolecules that the original approach ignores: the effects of chain connectivity in the case of dilute solutions, and the ability of polymer coils to change their spatial extension in response to alterations in their molecular environment. In the general case, this approach leads to composition-dependent interaction parameters, which can for most binary systems be described by means of two physically meaningful parameters; systems involving …
Magnetic and Electronic Properties ofRENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu) Compounds
2008
Resistivity and magnetic measurements were used to examine the ternary rare earth compounds RENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu). These compounds order antiferromagnetically with TN below 16 K (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm) or are paramagnetic (LuNiBi). For some of these compounds a metal–insulator transition was found. The metal–insulator transition temperature depends strongly on the preparation conditions. Both the magnetic ground states and the resistance behavior are in good agreement with electronic band structure calculations.
Didactical note: probabilistic conditionality in a Boolean algebra
1996
This note deals with two logical topics and concerns Boolean Algebras from an elementary point of view. First we consider the class of operations on a Boolean Algebra that can be used for modelling ``If-then" propositions. These operations, or Conditionals, are characterized under the hypothesis that they only obey to the Modus Ponens-Inequality, and it is shown that only six of them are boolean two-place functions. Is the Conditional Probability the Probability of a Conditional? This problem will be only considered, with the Material Conditional Operation, on a Boolean Algebra endowed with a finite probability and in three different cases: with the Internal-Conditional Probability, with th…
