An Open Innovation Decision Support System to Select a Biopharmaceutical R&D Portfolio

2015

Drugs available in the market today, selected several years ago under very uncertain future scenario, have experienced a long and expensive process of research and development carried out following both a closed and an open innovation path. To support this critical selection process, we propose a Decision Support System, able to choose among different candidates the most promising drugs along their best development path. The Decision Support System, based on a real options portfolio optimization model, mapping tools, and what-if rules as well, has been applied to a numerical example available in literature, and the research findings show interesting managerial and academic implications. Stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis using the data envelopment model

2006

Abstract Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA-2) are methods for evaluating alternatives based on multiple criteria. While DEA is mainly an ex-post tool used for classifying alternatives into efficient and inefficient ones, SMAA-2 is an ex-ante tool for supporting multiple criteria decision-making. Both methods use a kind of value function where the importance of criteria is modeled using weights. Unlike many other methods, neither DEA nor SMAA-2 requires decision-makers’ weights as input. Instead, these so-called non-parametric methods explore the weight space in order to identify weights favorable for each alternative. This paper introd…

Decision support for centralizing cargo at a Moroccan airport hub using stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis

2010

The geographical location of Morocco places it at the heart of important sea, air, rail and motorway transport routes between four continents. In this study we evaluate different alternatives to centralize multimodal cargo at a Moroccan airport hub. The choice depends on different socio-economical criteria, the geographical location, and the environmental impacts. Some of the criteria can be measured quantitatively, while for others only qualitative assessment is feasible. Furthermore, significant uncertainty is present in both the criteria measurements and the preferences. We aided this decision process using Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA). SMAA is a method that all…

Feature selection for KNN classifier to improve accurate detection of subthalamic nucleus during deep brain stimulation surgery in Parkinson’s patien…

2017

The tremor and dystonia associated with Parkinson’s disease can be treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) implanted into the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The accurate STN detection is a complex neurosurgeon task during a DBS surgery since a proper fixing of stimulating electrodes will impact on the patient’s future life. The brain electrical signals obtained with Micro Electrodes Register (MER) are acquired at different depths of the brain during DBS surgery to detect STN. In our previous work, we found good accuracy performance to improve the localization of STN using K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) supervised learning algorithm. However, for real-time classification, it is essential to reduce…

Adaptive rational interpolation for cell-average

2020

Abstract In this paper, we extend the rational interpolation introduced by G. Ramponi et al. (1997, 1998, 1996, 1995) to the cell average setting. We propose a new family of non linear interpolation operator. It consists on constructing new approximations using a non linear weighted combination of polynomials of degree 1 or 2 to obtain new interpolations of degree 2 or 4 respectively. New weights are proposed and analyzed. Gibbs phenomenon is studied and some experiments are performed comparing the new methods with classical linear and non linear interpolation as Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO).

Towards a kinetic theory for fermions with quantum coherence

2008

A new density matrix and corresponding quantum kinetic equations are introduced for fermions undergoing coherent evolution either in time (coherent particle production) or in space (quantum reflection). A central element in our derivation is finding new spectral solutions for the 2-point Green's functions written in the Wigner representation, that are carrying the information of the quantum coherence. Physically observable density matrix is then defined from the bare singular 2-point function by convoluting it with the extrenous information about the state of the system. The formalism is shown to reproduce familiar results from the Dirac equation approach, like Klein problem and nonlocal re…

Heisenberg Uncertainty Relation in Quantum Liouville Equation

2009

We consider the quantum Liouville equation and give a characterization of the solutions which satisfy the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. We analyze three cases. Initially we consider a particular solution of the quantum Liouville equation: the Wigner transformf(x,v,t) of a generic solutionψ(x;t) of the Schrödinger equation. We give a representation ofψ(x,t) by the Hermite functions. We show that the values of the variances ofxandvcalculated by using the Wigner functionf(x,v,t) coincide, respectively, with the variances of position operatorX^and conjugate momentum operatorP^obtained using the wave functionψ(x,t). Then we consider the Fourier transform of the density matrixρ(z,y,t) =ψ∗(z,t)…

Alternative Methods of Sterilization in Dental Practices Against COVID-19

2020

SARS-CoV-2, and several other microorganisms, may be present in nasopharyngeal and salivary secretions in patients treated in dental practices, so an appropriate clinical behavior is required in order to avoid the dangerous spread of infections. COVID-19 could also be spread when patients touches a contaminated surface with infected droplets and then touch their nose, mouth, or eyes. It is time to consider a dental practice quite similar to a hospital surgery room, where particular attention should be addressed to problems related to the spreading of infections due to air and surface contamination. The effectiveness of conventional cleaning and disinfection procedures may be limited by seve…

Role of ambient light in the detection of contrast elements in digital dental radiography.

2018

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different ambient light levels on observer detection of small contrast differences in a contrast phantom by using a high-end liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Study Design An aluminum step wedge was converted into a contrast phantom by the addition of bore holes. Radiographic images of the contrast elements were presented to 20 observers. Images were displayed in random order under different ambient light levels (0, 50, 200, and 500 lux) twice, and the observers had to determine if contrast elements were visible. Sensitivity and specificity were determined to calculate areas under receiver operating characteristic curves and Friedmann…

Ontological supports of knowledge: knowledge creation and analytical knowledge

2011

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine, from the perspective of different theoretical approaches, the relationship that exists between different ontological supports of knowledge and knowledge itself (the way it is created and its characteristics).Design/methodology/approachThe paper proposes two different types of knowledge (knowledge of concrete situations and abstract knowledge) and two approaches (the constructivist view and the cognitive view) and provides a general classification of the different knowledge types. Second, it examines the underlying ontological support‐knowledge creation, characteristics or types of knowledge relationship in different approaches. Finally, conclu…
