Photo-thermal modulation of surface plasmon polariton propagation at telecommunication wavelengths

International audience; We report on photo-thermal modulation of thin film surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) excited at telecom wavelengths and traveling at a gold/air interface. By operating a modulated continuous-wave or a Q-switched nanosecond pump laser, we investigate the photo-thermally induced modulation of SPP propagation mediated by the temperature-dependent ohmic losses in the gold film. We use a fiber-to-fiber characterization set-up to measure accurately the modulation depth of the SPP signal under photo-thermal excitation. Second zero dispersion wavelength measurement through soliton self-frequency shift compensation in suspended core fibre

International audience; A simple experimental technique to evaluate the second zero dispersion wavelength of very small core microstrutured fibres is described. Based on the effect of soliton self-frequency shift and its subsequent compensation in the vicinity of the second zero dispersion. the proposed method is applied to both standard and suspended core microstructured fibres by simply measuring the frequency stabilised soliton spectrum, avoiding any calculation and knowledge of any experimental parameters.

Pulse doubling and wavelength conversion through triangular nonlinear pulse reshaping

International audience; We present a proof of principle experiment demonstrating the benefits of using a triangular temporal profile in the context of copying and wavelength conversion of telecommunication signals. Generated by passive nonlinear reshaping in a set of two carefully chosen fibres, the triangular shape enables efficient temporal and spectral doubling of the signals through self-phase modulation.

Kerr beam self-cleaning in graded-index multimode fibers is accompanied by power-dependent temporal pulse reshaping. We explore the complex nonlinear dynamics with a single long pulse, where the optical power is continuously varied across its profile.

Morphological and chemical dynamics upon electrochemical cyclic sodiation of electrochromic tungsten oxide coatings extracted by in situ ellipsometry.

The sodiation–desodiation process of sputtered amorphous electrochromic tungsten oxide coatings in an aqueous-based medium was simultaneously monitored over 99 cycles by cyclic voltammetry and in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry. This allowed extracting the evolution of optical and geometrical parameters upon cycling. The resulting electrochemical coloring-bleaching process was dynamically fitted in the 1.8–2.8 eV optical range with a four-phase model including a constrained spline parametrization of the dielectric function. Universal soliton pattern formations in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

2011

International audience; We investigate multiple-soliton pattern formations in a figure-of-eight passively mode-locked fiber laser. Operation in the anomalous dispersion regime with a double-clad fiber amplifier allows generation of up to several hundreds of solitons per round trip. We report the observation of remarkable soliton distributions: soliton gas, soliton liquid, soliton polycrystal, and soliton crystal, thus indicating the universality of such complexes.

Molecular alignment echoes probe collision-induced rotational-speed changes

International audience; We show that the decays with pressure of the rotational alignment echoes induced in N 2 O-He gas mixtures by two ultrashort laser pulses with various delays show detailed information about collision-induced changes of the rotational speed of the molecules. Measurements and classical calculations consistently demonstrate that collisions reduce the echo amplitude all the more efficiently when the echo appears late. We quantitatively explain this behavior by the filamentation of the classical rotational phase space induced by the first pulse and the narrowing of the filaments with time. Isotope removal experiment in JET-ILW in view of T-removal after the 2nd DT campaign at JET

Abstract A sequence of fuel recovery methods was tested in JET, equipped with the ITER-like beryllium main chamber wall and tungsten divertor, to reduce the plasma deuterium concentration to less than 1% in preparation for operation with tritium. This was also a key activity with regard to refining the clean-up strategy to be implemented at the end of the 2nd DT campaign in JET (DTE2) and to assess the tools that are envisaged to mitigate the tritium inventory build-up in ITER. Identification of bound alcohols in soil humic acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

International audience; Humic acids are complex, partly macromolecular, yellow-brownish substances occurring in soils, waters and sediments. In order to shed some light on their molecular structure, crop humic acids were cleaved by alkaline hydrolysis (KOH). The products were fractionated by thin layer chromatography to give mono-alcohols which were analysed as acetate derivatives by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Linear alcohols, sterols, stanols and plant-derived triterpenoid alcohols were identified by co-injection of pure standards and by comparison with literature data.
