Role of PCR in Diagnosis and Prognosis of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Patients Coinfected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1

ABSTRACT A group of 76 consecutive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with fever of unknown origin ( n = 52) or fever associated with pulmonary diseases was evaluated in order to assess the usefulness of PCR with peripheral blood in the diagnosis and follow-up of visceral leishmaniasis. We identified 10 cases of visceral leishmaniasis among the 52 patients with fever of unknown origin. At the time of diagnosis, all were parasitemic by PCR with peripheral blood. During follow-up, a progressive decline in parasitemia was observed under therapy, and all patients became PCR negative after a median of 5 weeks (range, 6 to 21 weeks). The current study evaluates the clinical effect of sirolimus exposure on the occurrence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia necessitating preemptive antiviral therapy. A total of 167 consecutive recipients of reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) who received sirolimus- and tacrolimus-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis and whose CMV serostatus was positive for donors and/or recipients were included in this multicenter retrospective study. Disentangling the rhizosphere effect on nitrate reducers and denitrifiers: insight into the role of root exudates.

Development of fluorogenic probe-based PCR assays for the detection and quantification of bovine piroplasmids.

This paper reports two new quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays, developed in an attempt to improve the detection of bovine piroplasmids. The first of these techniques is a duplex TaqMan assay for the simultaneous diagnosis of Babesia bovis and B. bigemina. This technique is ideal for use in South America where bovids harbour no theilerids. Food-fermenting lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are generally considered to be non-toxic and non-pathogenic. Some species of LAB, however, can produce biogenic amines (BAs). BAs are organic, basic, nitrogenous compounds, mainly formed through decarboxylation of amino acids. BAs are present in a wide range of foods, including dairy products, and can occasionally accumulate in high concentrations. The consumption of food containing large amounts of these amines can have toxicological consequences. Nasal-pharyngeal swab (NPS), with real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase (PCR), is the gold standard for the diagnosis; however, there are difficulties related to the procedure that may postpone it.
