From Historical Silk Fabrics to Their Interactive Virtual Representation and 3D Printing
2020
The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. In this paper, we bring a new methodology to virtually represent such heritage and produce 3D printouts, also making it highly interactive through the tool Virtual Loom. Our work involves sustainability from different per…
The Studio: Reflections and Issues Arising
1999
An advanced Telematic Studio was built at the University of Jyvaskyla to combine the latest technologies for local and distributed work and/or meetings. The objectives were to combine leading edge technologies with ethnographic design principles derived from CSCW and HCI to support a broad range of activities. We informed the design by studies of similar facilities on other sites. The Studio is popular, and it is easy to give glowing accounts of its use. Nevertheless, over three years a significant number of problems have arisen with both technologies and uses. Some of these are local. Others may be generalisable to any ‘cooperative building’. For example: problems with videoconferencing; i…
TP53 codon 72 polymorphism and cervical cancer
2009
Background Cervical cancer is caused primarily by human papillomaviruses (HPV). The polymorphism rs1042522 at codon 72 of the TP53 tumour-suppressor gene has been investigated as a genetic cofactor. More than 80 studies were done between 1998 and 2006, after it was initially reported that women who are homozygous for the arginine allele had a risk for cervical cancer seven times higher than women who were heterozygous for the allele. However, results have been inconsistent. Here we analyse pooled data from 49 studies to determine whether there is an association between TP53 codon 72 polymorphism and cervical cancer. Methods Individual data on 7946 cases and 7888 controls from 49 different st…
Un caso limite di persuasione. Strategie argomentative in Metafisica Gamma
2014

Dirichlet Boundary Value Problem for the Second Order Asymptotically Linear System
2016
We consider the second order system x′′=f(x) with the Dirichlet boundary conditions x(0)=0=x(1), where the vector field f∈C1(Rn,Rn) is asymptotically linear and f(0)=0. We provide the existence and multiplicity results using the vector field rotation theory.
Assessment of the Operating Temperature of Crystalline PV Modules Based on Real Use Conditions
2014
Determining the operating temperatureTcof photovoltaic panelsPVis important in evaluating the actual performance of these systems. In the literature, different correlations exist, in either explicit or implicit forms, which often do not account for the electrical behaviour of panels; in this way, estimatingTcis based only on the passive behaviour of thePV. In this paper, the authors propose a new implicit correlation that takes into account the standard weather variables and the electricity production regimes of aPVpanel in terms of the proximity to the maximum power points. To validate its reliability, the new correlation was tested on two different PV panels (Sanyo and Kyocera panels) and…
In vitro assessment of a novel additive manufactured titanium implant abutment
2021
Background Dental implant temporization remains a clinical challenge. A novel abutment simplifying the procedure was developed, but conventional fabrication was costly and unpredictable. A workflow was developed to fabricate the novel abutment using additive manufacturing. This in vitro investigation assessed the additive manufactured (AM) novel abutments to conventionally manufactured (CM) abutments. Material and methods The AM abutments were fabricated in dental-grade titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) using Selective Laser Melting and were post-processed. The CM abutments were milled and subsequently laser welded manually. Pin strength of the abutments was assessed using a universal loading machine. T…
CostNet: An End-to-End Framework for Goal-Directed Reinforcement Learning
2020
Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a general framework concerned with an agent that seeks to maximize rewards in an environment. The learning typically happens through trial and error using explorative methods, such as \(\epsilon \)-greedy. There are two approaches, model-based and model-free reinforcement learning, that show concrete results in several disciplines. Model-based RL learns a model of the environment for learning the policy while model-free approaches are fully explorative and exploitative without considering the underlying environment dynamics. Model-free RL works conceptually well in simulated environments, and empirical evidence suggests that trial and error lead to a near-opti…
