On the Influence of the Evaluation Methods in Conjoint Design — Some Empirical Results

It is the goal of conjoint analysis to explain and predict preferences of customers (Schweikl 1985). Variants of predefined manifestations of attributes of various product concepts (both real and hypothetical) are created, and these are presented to test persons for evaluation. The contributions (partial benefits) the various attributes make to overall preference (overall benefit) are estimated on the basis of overall preference judgments (Green and Srinivasan 1978).

Although supply and demand are perhaps the most fundamental concepts in economics, finding any general form for their behavior has proved to be elusive. Here we discuss our recent findings [1] on the price impact function empirically detected in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Our study builds on earlier studies of how trading affects prices [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. In particular, we look at the short term response to a single trade. This is done by using huge amounts of data and by measuring the market activity in units of transactions rather than seconds, so that we can more naturally aggregate data for many different stocks. A tick size is the smallest increment of a security price. Tick size is typically regulated by the exchange where the security is traded and it may be modified either because the exchange enforces an overall tick size change or because the price of the security is too low or too high. There is an extensive literature, partially reviewed in Sect. 2 of the present paper, on the role of tick size in the price formation process. However, the role and the importance of tick size has not been yet fully understood, as testified, for example, by a recent document of the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR) [1].
Market Timing with a Robust Moving Average

In this paper we entertain a method of finding the most robust moving average weighting scheme to use for the purpose of timing the market. Robustness of a weighting scheme is defined its ability to generate sustainable performance under all possible market scenarios regardless of the size of the averaging window. The method is illustrated using the long-run historical data on the Standard and Poor's Composite stock price index. We find the most robust moving average weighting scheme, demonstrates its advantages, and discuss its practical implementation.
How much should customers be compensated for interruptions in the drinking water supply?

Water supply interruptions directly affect customers, and customers should be compensated accordingly. However, few water regulators have applied compensation policies given the difficulty of estimating the economic value of compensation to customers. In this study, a pioneering approach based on the concept of shadow prices is proposed to determine the compensation that customers should receive for unplanned water interruptions. Yield and profitability of modified spanish bush and Y-trellis training systems for peach

Peach trees trained to modified Spanish bush (MSB) and Y-trellis (Y) were evaluated and compared in the Mediterranean settings of Southern Italy. The observations included two peach (Rich May and Summer Rich) and two nectarine (Big Bang and Nectaross) cultivars. In the MSB system, trees were spaced at 4.5 x 2.5 m (888 trees/ha), whereas in the Y system, trees were spaced at 5.5 x 2 m (909 trees/ha).
