In the indirect developing sea urchin embryo, the primary mesenchyme cells (PMCs) acquire most of the positional and temporal information from the overlying ectoderm for skeletal initiation and growth. In this study, we characterize the function of the novel gene strim1, which encodes a tripartite motif-containing (TRIM) protein, that adds to the list of genes constituting the epithelial-mesenchymal signaling network. We report that strim1 is expressed in ectoderm regions adjacent to the bilateral clusters of PMCs and that its misexpression leads to severe skeletal abnormalities. In the present study we analyzed gene expression profiles of primary breast cancer cells in culture in order to highlight genes related to EMT. BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was the immunohistological assessment of VEGF-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-related angiogenic activity in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in correlation with prognosis. METHODS: Fifty OSCC samples were immunostained with CD31-antibodies. Mean microvessel density (MVD) and staining intensity were determined and associated with clinicopathological/prognostic features as well as with the VEGF +936C/T SNP. RESULTS: A significant higher MVD could be seen for T3 and T4 compared with T1 and T2, N > 0 vs. N0 as well as G3–G4 vs. G1–G2 OSCCs (all: P < 0.05). Uterine glomeruloid hemangioma in a patient without POEMS syndrome.

Cutaneous glomeruloid hemangioma is a hallmark of POEMS syndrome. These patients have elevated serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor. The authors report an extracutaneous uterine glomeruloid hemangioma in an 82-year-old woman with a history of breast and endometrial carcinomas. Within the lumen of myometrial vessels, a lobular, glomeruloid proliferation of capillary-like CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1-positive endothelial cells was found.
