The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano

International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.
Primary structure and unusual carbohydrate moiety of functional unit 2-c of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH)

Abstract The complete amino acid sequence of the Megathura crenulata hemocyanin functional unit KLH2-c was determined by direct sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry of the protein, and of peptides obtained by cleavage with EndoLysC proteinase, chymotrypsin and cyanogen bromide. This is the first complete primary structure of a functional unit c from a gastropod hemocyanin. KLH2-c consists of 420 amino acid residues. Circular dichroism spectra indicated approx. 31% β-sheet and 29% α-helix contents. Slowly progressive aphasia: a four-year follow-up study

This paper reports the long-term follow-up of GC, a patient with primary progressive aphasia of the fluent type. GC presented at onset with an anomia characterized by sparing of first letter knowledge, that applied mainly to proper names and living categories. No semantic deficits were observed in the first stage of the disease, and MRI showed a left temporal lobe atrophy with a gradient from the pole to the posterior regions, the latter being less involved. We now report the clinical evolution of GC from the 2nd to the 4th year of disease. Statins are highly efficacious lipid modifying agents that reduce the risk for cardiovascular (CV) events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. However, statins affect molecular mechanisms which adversely impact on insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, thereby increasing risk for new onset diabetes mellitus (NOD). Defining the mechanisms involved is the focus of considerable current investigation. The statins reduce the risk for CV events in normoglycemic patients as well as in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and their benefits outweigh the risk of inducing NOD. BackgroundSelf-efficacy and enjoyment are two main constructs proposed within many motivational theories in any human endeavor, sport and physical activity included.MethodsThe purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of two pictorial scales measuring self-efficacy and enjoyment levels in a sample of 14,035 Italian schoolchildren (7,075 boys and 6,960 girls, 6- to 7-year-olds). JUNO sensitivity to low energy atmospheric neutrino spectra

Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. Reconstruction of events recorded with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

Cosmic rays arriving at Earth collide with the upper parts of the atmosphere, thereby inducing extensive air showers. When secondary particles from the cascade arrive at the ground, they are measured by surface detector arrays. We describe the methods applied to the measurements of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory to reconstruct events with zenith angles less than 60 using the timing and signal information recorded using the water-Cherenkov detector stations. In addition, we assess the accuracy of these methods in reconstructing the arrival directions of the primary cosmic ray particles and the sizes of the induced showers.
