Temperature is a very important parameter during nitritation, having a direct effect on ammonia oxidation rate (AOR) and enzymatic activities which relate to both N2O and NO emission. This study aims at investigating the effect of temperature on AOR, N2O and NO production in an enriched ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performing partial nitrification (PN) of synthetic reject wastewater. To achieve that, a SBR was subject to several shifts in temperature (in the range of 30 to 15 °C, 5 °C for each decrease). Abstract The effect of the flavonoid and saponin fractions from the leaves and root bark of Zizyphus lotus (200 mg/kg) was evaluated on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and on acetic acid-induced algesia in mice. In addition, two methanolic extracts from the plant (1 mg/ear) were tested on oxazolone-induced contact-delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice. The effect of the different fractions was also evaluated in vitro on the nitrite production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Cercarial Production of the Trematode Rhipidocotyle fennica in Clams Kept in the Field

The numbers of cercariae that trematodes produce have been previously investigated in the laboratory but not in the field. I studied cercarial production of the bucephalid trematode Rhipidocotyle fennica in the freshwater unionid clam Anodonta piscinalis kept under natural conditions. Naturally infected clams (n = 180) were collected and marked in early June 1996. Every 14 days, starting from the collection date and ending in October, these clams were taken to the laboratory where they were monitored for the emergence of trematode cercariae. Mepanipyrim haptens and antibodies with nanomolar affinity

Mepanipyrim is an anilinopyrimidine fungicide used worldwide for crop protection. With the aim of developing useful immunoreagents for mepanipyrim immunoanalysis, two new functionalized derivatives were prepared and antibodies were generated. Affinity and specificity were assessed by direct and indirect competitive ELISA using homologous and heterologous conjugates. Although all antibodies were selective for the target analyte, the immunizing hapten structure was revealed as a determinant for high-affinity antibody production (IC50 = 3 nM). © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The effect of the crystalline phase of TiO 2 (anatase, rutile and brookite) on its photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production from methanol-water vapours has been investigated by testing a series of both home-made and commercial TiO 2 photocatalysts, either bare or surface-modified by deposition of a fixed amount, i.e. 1 wt%, of platinum as co-catalyst. For all of the TiO 2 samples the rate of hydrogen production increased by one order of magnitude upon Pt deposition, because of the ability of Pt to enhance the separation of photoproduced electron-hole pairs. β-Lactoglobulin (β-lg) is the major whey milk protein and it represents the main allergen in cow and sheep milk (1). Microbial fermentation produces some proteolytic enzymes and leads to the degradation of milk protein allergens. In this study, the results of a screening on the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from typical Sicilian cheeses to reduce the β-lg are shown. This screening was carried out through an indirect competitive ELISA. The lactic acid fermentation was found to be suitable for decreasing milk immunoreactivity.
