Applications of xylochemistry from laboratory to industrial scale
2020
Xylochemicals and their utilisation in total synthesis and industrial applications are highlighted in this review. This class of chemicals consists of bio-based molecules or building blocks derived from renewable feedstocks like plant-biomass, lignocellulose as well as waste-streams. The advantages over petroleum-based chemicals are presented with the aid of specific examples ranging from the total synthesis of natural products, relevant industrial applications to the exploitation of CO2 as a C1 feedstock. This review contributes to the trend of a “greener” and a more sustainable chemistry.
What distance do university students walk and bike daily to class in Spain
2016
Abstract Introduction Physical activity levels are low in the general population and these levels decrease from childhood to adolescence, as well as from adolescence to adulthood. Active commuting (AC) is an opportunity to increase the physical activity levels. The distance between home and destinations is a main correlate of AC; however, the distance that university students walk or cycle to university is unknown. Methods Participants self-reported their modes and time of commuting to and from university in a questionnaire, and the main mode of commuting was identified. Moreover, they reported their home address, and the Spanish version of Mapquest software was used to measure street-netwo…
Teaching and learning in consumer behavior: a class activity supporting real decision-making in cultural management
2010
Abstract Problem-based learning has been suggested as a useful tool to foster student-centered learning and increase student motivation. Students of Business Administration are not familiar with Research on Consumer Behavior, its contents and techniques, since this subject is traditionally linked to Psychology. In order to facilitate the teaching-learning process in this subject, this paper presents an application of problem-based learning in the context of Consumer Behavior. Results of this pilot experience are assessed under a qualitative and a quantitative basis. The evidence obtained allow us to conclude that this collaboration project enable students to obtain and to process informatio…
Environmental Humanities in pre-service teachers' Education
2018
Aim: The aim of the reserch is to explore the possibility of integrating Sciences and Humanities in the Faculty of Education using Ecocriticism books and literary workshops with didactic activities of interdisciplinary nature.
Methods: The experience was carried out with 100 students of the Faculty of Education of the University of Valencia from the subjects “Natural Sciences for teachers” and “Literary training for teachers”, where different didactic activities around two literary works, a novel and a short story, were proposed.
Results: After the activities, the vast mayority of the students consider that Literature can help to learn Science. 41'7% of the students of “Literary…
The function of contextual knowledge: A videotaped class session in France
2015
This paper concerns seeing; specifically, what should and what can be seen in a classroom situation in a progressive school in Paris. It focuses on a lesson given in a foreign cultural context and the possibility of documenting it and reconstructing it: first, as far as possible, unaffectedly and out of context, to achieve comparative and interpretative classroom research. The emphasis will be on the way the subject matter is set up and the role the learners assume. It will become apparent that technical recordings, which are helpful in allowing literal transcriptions and descriptions, tempt us into abandoning objectiveness, thereby overlooking certain facts and circumstances. Only contextu…
Becoming a Language Teacher
2015
In this qualitative study the author examined personal narratives written by 14 Finnish speaking student teachers of Swedish, in order to find out what they tell about their thoughts and feelings concerning their future work as language teachers. The following three themes were in focus: firstly, what university students tell about their reasons for wanting to become teachers in the first place; secondly, what kinds of worries concerning their future work they mention in their narratives; and thirdly, how student teachers could be supported during transition from teacher education to teaching. According to the study, students choose teaching for reasons that are related to: (a) teacher iden…
A Map-Based Visualization Tool To Support Tutors In E-Learning 2.0
2009
Web 2.0 regards essentially the social issues about the new usage of web applications, but participative web and user generated contents induce a new way to think about the design of the web applications themselves. This is particularly true in the field of educational systems that are all web based applications. Many researchers are now devoted to study what is called e-learning 2.0 both as regards the technological issues in the field of computer science, and in relation to the impact of the web 2.0 social and psychological issues on the education process itself. One of the most crucial topics in e-learning 2.0 is the way to provide support to the teacher/tutor to avoid cognitive overload…
Benefits of computer screen-based simulation in learning cardiac arrest procedures
2010
Medical Education 2010: 44: 716–722 Objectives What is the best way to train medical students early so that they acquire basic skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as effectively as possible? Studies have shown the benefits of high-fidelity patient simulators, but have also demonstrated their limits. New computer screen-based multimedia simulators have fewer constraints than high-fidelity patient simulators. In this area, as yet, there has been no research on the effectiveness of transfer of learning from a computer screen-based simulator to more realistic situations such as those encountered with high-fidelity patient simulators. Methods We tested the benefits of learning cardiac arre…
Quranic app practices among multilingual Muslim youth in Denmark
2019
This article sheds light on a set of religious literacy practices which have so far received very little scientific attention, namely ‘quranic app practices’. Quranic app practices are conceptualized as ways of engaging with the Quran through religious apps on smartphones or tablets. The article is based primarily on an explorative group interview with four young people from a Year 8 class in a multilingual lower secondary school in Denmark. The youth have Somali and Afghan background, consider themselves practicing Muslims and can be described as ‘religious heritage learners of Arabic’ (Temples 2013). The article explores the quranic app practices of the young people as reported in the int…
