Contact and contactless diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: potential for recovery monitoring of vascular lesions after intense pulsed light treatment.

2011

Optical fiber contact probe diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and remote multispectral imaging methods in the spectral range of 400 to 1100 nm were used for skin vascular malformation assessment and recovery tracing after treatment by intense pulsed light. The results confirmed that oxy-hemoglobin relative changes and the optical density difference between lesion and healthy skin in the spectral region 500 to 600 nm may be successfully used for objective appraisal of the therapy effect. Color redness parameter a* = 2 is suggested as a diagnostic border to distinguish healthy skin and vascular lesions, and as the indicator of phototreatment efficiency. Valuable diagnostic information on large…

FOCAL LIVER LESIONS: CONTRAST-ENHANCED ULTRASOUND

2008

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) represents a significant breakthrough in sonography and it is being increasingly used for evaluation of focal liver lesions (FLLs). The unique feature of CEUS of non-invasively assessing in real time liver perfusion throughout the vascular phase has led to a dramatic improvement in diagnostic accuracy of US in either detection and characterization of FLLs, as well as in the guidance and evaluation of response of therapeutic procedures. Currently, CEUS is included as a part of the suggested diagnostic work-up of FLLs, resulting in a better patient management and cost-effective therapy delivering. After a brief description of the basis of different CEUS tec…

Evaluation of microbial diversity during the manufacture of Fior di Latte di Agerola, a traditional raw milk pasta-filata cheese of the Naples area

2006

Microbial diversity of the raw milk for the production of Fior di Latte di Agerola and its changes during cheesemaking were studied. Viable counts showed that at the end of curd ripening, loads of lactic acid bacteria, both mesophilic and thermophilic rods and cocci, higher than those commonly evidenced in similar cheeses produced by using natural or commercial starters, were detected. Identification of 272 isolates, supported by molecular diagnostic aids, evidenced representative cultures of a high number of bacterial taxa of interest as participating in the process, although most of the isolates belonged to Lactococcus lactis and Lactobacillus helveticus species. RAPD-PCR and REA-PFGE bio…

Effect of Pulsed Electric Field Pretreatment on Drying Kinetics, Color, and Texture of Parsnip and Carrot.

2018

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment on drying kinetics and on color and textural changes in sliced parsnip and carrot. Cell disintegration index measured in parsnips after PEF pretreatment significantly differed from the ones measured for carrots and, consequently, the reduction of the time needed to dry both samples to a final moisture content up to 5% (wet basis). The drying time of the PEF pretreated parsnip was reduced by up to 28% at 70 °C and by up to 21% at 60 °C in carrot, in comparison to untreated samples. The PEF pretreatment influenced the effective diffusivity of water into the samples going from 50 °C to 70 °C: in carrots…

Identification of SCP2165, a new SCP2-derived plasmid of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2).

2005

Aims:  Characterization of SCP2165, a plasmid identified in the Gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). Methods and Results:  Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of mycelia of a S. coelicolor strain embedded in low melting agarose revealed the presence of a plasmid. Restriction enzyme mapping and sequence analysis of a 2·1 kb fragment revealed that this plasmid could be SCP2. SCP2 and its spontaneous derivative SCP2* are self-transmissible plasmids and have chromosome mobilizing ability (c.m.a.). SCP2* has a c. 1000-fold increased c.m.a. compared with SCP2. Interestingly the plasmid, named SCP2165, shows a c.m.a. from 5 × 10−2 to 1 × 10−1 which is 50–100-fold higher than …

Karyotypic diversity among Blastocystis hominis isolates

1997

Fifteen Blastocystis hominis strains, 13 axenic and 2 monoxenic, have been included in the present study. The chromosomal pattern was analyzed by the contour-clamped homogeneous electric-field (CHEF) system. The number of chromosomes detected ranged between 9 and 13, with sizes from 2200 kbp to 260 kbp. Eleven karyotypic profiles, with a common pattern constituted by 8 chromosomes of 2200, 1280, 890, 840, 700, 650, 540 and 260 kbp, were observed. The Jaccard index demonstrated that the similarity between isolates ranged from 0.5714 to 1. The different isolates were clustered in 3 karyotypes (A: 8 isolates; B: 6 isolates and C: 1 isolate). All isolates grouped in karyotype A presented a char…

Pulsed field gel electrophoresis and genome size estimates

2015

Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is a quick and reliable procedure to resolve DNA molecules larger than 30 kb by applying an electric field that periodically changes direction. This technique can be used to estimate genome size of a microorganism, to reveal if a genome is circular or linear, to indicate the presence of megaplasmids, and to show if a strain contains only one or more chromosomes.
