Hydrophobin (HFBI): a potential fusion partner for one-step purification of recombinant proteins from insect cells
2008
Hydrophobins play an important role in binding and assembly of fungal surface structures as well as in medium-air interactions. These, hydrophobic properties provide interesting possibilities when purification of macromolecules is concerned. In aqueous micellar two-phase systems, based on surfactants, the water soluble hydrophobins are concentrated inside micellar structures and, thus, distributed to defined aqueous phases. This, one-step purification is attractive particularly when large-scale production of recombinant proteins is concerned. In the present study the hydrophobin HFBI of Trichoderma reesei was expressed as an N-terminal fusion with chicken avidin in baculovirus infected inse…
Analysis of Prey Composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers' Acrocephalus scirpaceus Droppings at Four Breeding Sites in Italy
2022
Our aim was to investigate the among-populations diversity of prey composition in Eurasian Reed Warblers’ diets via their droppings, both to assess the ecological validity of this sampling method and to test whether the prey species most abundant in fecal samples were also the most present in the Italian study site. We collected fecal samples at four sites throughout Italy, for a total of 144 samples. Within reedbeds, the breeding habitat of the Eurasian Reed Warbler, we also collected arthropods by carrying out entomological sweepings at one of the study sites. Within the fecal samples, we identified dozens of prey species, belonging mainly to Araneae, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and …
Invasive mussels directly threat intertidal vermetid reef: some evidences from a Sicilian MPA
2009
Biological invasions pose a great threat to natural communities. Brachidontes pharaonis is an Eritrean mussel that has accessed in the Mediterranean sea shortly after the opening of the Suez Canal. At the beginning it had a restrained distribution with small local populations along the Israeli intertidal coast. More than a hundred years later it spread westward as far as NW Sicily, colonizing some hyperaline and natural habitats. Previous studies along the Israeli coast have proved that anthropogenic habitat modi#- cations occurring on vermetid reefs may promote the colonization of this invasive mussel causing a reduction of the indigenous mussel Mytilaster minimus. This study focuses on a …
Substratum recognition as settlement cue for larvae of Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859)
2017
Despite the ecological relevance of the vermetid bioconstructions in the Mediterranean, little is known about the early life stage of Dendropoma cristatum. This study describes the preference for settlement substrata from D. cristatumlarvae. A field experiment was carried out to test the suitability of crustose coralline algae (CCA), D. cristatumadults and two inorganic substrata as settlement surfaces. The number of settling larvae varied among the four treatments with higher settlement success on organic surfaces. CCA and D. cristatumindividuals seem to promote attachment of young larvae and to induce the metamorphosis in recruits. This is probably due to biological or physical properties…
Global and local stressors on community succession in the Mediterranean intertidal zone
Primera liberación de juveniles de mero Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834) (Serranidae: Teleostei) cultivados en criadero en arrecifes artificiales …
2008
A pilot experiment of stock enhancement based on the release of hatchery-reared juveniles of dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, was carried out at two artificial reefs located 0.9 km offshore the south-western Sicilian coast (Central Mediterranean). The fish assemblages inhabiting the reefs were characterized using underwater visual census (UVC) surveys. Despite some differences in fish species richness, diversity and abundance, both artificial reefs provide suitable feeding resources and shelter opportunities for the settlement of dusky grouper juveniles. A total of 95 dusky grouper juveniles, which were 3 and 4 years old, were released. No stress-related effects on fish swimming or be…
Asiakasraportointiprosessin uudistus finanssiyhtiöissä
2017
Finanssialan yritysten asiakasraportointi on yksi selkeimmin asiakkaille näkyvistä prosesseista. Tässä tutkielmassa toteutettiin suomalaiselle finanssiyhtiöille uusi asiakasraportoinnin kuukausittaiseen massa-ajoon tarkoitettu sovellus. Tutkielmassa rinnastettiin Business Process Reengineering-malli (BPR) suunnittelutieteellisen tutkimuksen malliin. Näiden mallien avulla uudistusprojekti pystyttiin viemään läpi syste…
First assessment of the epifauna associated with macroalgae of the vermetid reef along the coasts of Favignana Island (South Tyrrhenian Sea)
2017
With this study we provide a first baseline assessment of the epifauna associated with the macroalgae of the vermetid reefs present along the coasts of the Island of Favignana (Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, Italy). A total of 14 taxa were identified. Epifaunal assemblages differed according to structure and composition of algal communities. The amphipod group presented the highest number of individuals. The tubicolous species Ampithoe ramondi Audouin, 1826 (Ampithoidae) was the most abundant species.
