Cloning of Two Putative Ecdysteroid Receptor Isoforms from Tenebrio Molitor and their Developmental Expression in the Epidermis during Metamorphosis

Using the Drosophila EcR-B1 cDNA as a probe, we have cloned the putative ecdysteroid receptor from the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. We have isolated two cDNAs with different 5' termini that contain a complete open reading frame. These two cDNAs encode two proteins with distinct N-terminal regions corresponding to two isoforms. The coleopteran receptor is obviously related to the ecdysteroid receptor of other insects, but shares only 89% and 61% amino acid identities with the DNA-binding and ligand-binding domains of the Drosophila receptor, respectively. Individual variability of mytimycin gene expression in mussel

The antifungal peptide mytimycin (MytM) is synthesized by hemocytes of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis. In addition to sequence and gene structure diversities previously reported from pooled hemocytes, the present report focused on the expression of mytm gene in individual M. galloprovincialis, before and after challenge. Within untreated mussel, MytM mRNA was observed by ISH in about 42% of circulating hemocytes, characterized by large, diffuse nucleus. Injection with Fusarium oxysporum increased such percentage, but in only some of the mussels. MEF2s transcription factors and class IIa HDACs compose a fundamental axis for several differentiation pathways. Functional relationships between this axis and cancer are largely unexplored. We have found that class IIa HDACs are heterogeneously expressed and display redundant activities in breast cancer cells. Applying gene set enrichment analysis to compare the expression profile of a list of putative MEF2 target genes, we have discovered a correlation between the down-regulation of the MEF2 signature and the aggressiveness of ER(+) breast tumors. The directly light-sensitive chick pineal gland contains at least two photopigments. Pinopsin seems to mediate the acute inhibitory effect of light on melatonin synthesis, whereas melanopsin may act by phase-shifting the intrapineal circadian clock. In the present study we have investigated, by means of quantitative RT-PCR, the daily rhythm of photopigment gene expression as monitored by mRNA levels. Under a 12-h light/12-h dark cycle, the mRNA levels of both pigments were 5-fold higher in the transitional phase from light to dark than at night, both in vivo and in vitro. Abstract Several bis-cyclohexyl-crown-ethers have been synthesized and used as carriers for alkaline cations. These compounds should all show negative allosteric cooperativity, but only 1 exhibits an odd cation transport behavior across the liquid organic membranes.

The bud-to-cap stage transition during early tooth development is a time when the tooth-inducing potential becomes restricted to the mesenchyme. Several key genes, expressed in the mesenchyme at this stage, are an absolute requirement for the progression of tooth development. These include the transcription factors Msx1 and Pax9. Abstract It is established that Porifera (sponges) represent the earliest phylum which branched off from the common ancestor of all multicellular animals, the Urmetazoa. In the present study, the hypothesis is tested if, during this transition, pluripotent stem cells were formed which are provided—similar to the totipotent cells (archaeocytes/germ cells)—with a self-renewal capacity. As a model system, primmorphs from the sponge Suberites domuncula were used.
