The need and implications of the human capital management system

2021

In an era where technology and innovation seem to take over every organizational process, differentiation in terms of sustainable economic growth is achieved by implementing a human capital management system. In order to develop a proper model that encompasses a long-term perspective and an infinite organizational mindset, using a survey questionnaire collected data from 118 responses and 3 focus groups were conducted. This paper aims to highlight the results regarding the degree of implementation of the human capital management system and the implications for organizational performance arising from this approach. The requisite match between internal resources and network ties to cope with knowledge scarcity

2020

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the internationalization strategies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the interaction between network ties and “soft” internal resources at the foundation of knowledge management (KM). Specifically, it identifies the firms’ internal capabilities that affect KM strategies, and their collective influence on the degree of internationalization; verifies the influence of network ties on the internationalization process itself; and develops a conceptual “preliminary theoretical framework of SME internationalization capabilities and networks.”Design/methodology/approachThe primary research and analysis are based on a proportional stratified s…

Managing Knowledge in Academic Libraries Are we? Should we?

2016

This article gives an overview of the field of knowledge management and suggests how this can be applied to academic libraries. A literature review has been conducted and has been subject to a critical analysis of comparison to IFLAs standard for “Continuing Professional Development: Principles and Best Practices” (IFLA, 2015). Here IFLA has identified 10 points of best practice. These 10 points will be measured against the literature in the field of knowledge management to ascertain if academic libraries would benefit from a stronger relation to knowledge management.

From the Publisher: The Journal Human Technology: An Ongoing Resource for Human-Technology Research

2012

The purpose of this paper is to present the theoretical basis for a measurement and improvement system that will help organizations create a more innovative climate. The role of intangible assets in contributing to organizational innovativeness is clarified within six hypotheses on the basis of a cross-disciplinary literature review combining studies from psychology, human resources management, communication, information technology, and marketing. These factors range from the individual level to interaction with the environment surrounding the organization, and involve (a) individual psychological flexibility, (b) institutional and interpersonal trust, (c) diverse human resources, (d) strat…

Socio-technical innovation in community-based tourism organizations: A proposal for local development

2021

Abstract Socio-technical innovation is based on new patterns of interaction involving a set of new behaviors that have been legitimized in a given context. The approach of socio-technical innovation complements a purely technological innovation focus. However, studies of how to address social and environmental challenges under this approach are scarce. The aim of this paper is to identify the technical and social structures that underpin the socio-technical innovation system of community-based tourism organizations (CBTOs). This paper offers an in-depth case study of a specific type of collective property known as an “ejido”. Through this case study, the paper highlights the aspects that ha…

Objectives and Challenges in Finnish Software Companies 2018 - Interview of 99 Finnish Software Development Firms

2019

The business domain of software development growth increasingly during 2018 and while software companies in Finland are taking benefit of this momentum, they are facing multiple internal and external challenges. We constructed annual software business survey for 99 enterprise to micro-size software companies in Finland. Based on our survey, software development firms aim at growing rather than improving efficiency or changing focus. The focus remains on strengthening the current business instead of aligning it with the market transition, although the lack of competence and resources is remarkable. This poster paper gives a prompt overview of the Finnish software business domain and how soft…

Customer Relationships Management in Organizations

2013

Abstract In recent years, the market for on-demand CRM applications suffered especially in the segment of small and medium companies because of the concerns about the cost and the complexity of on request implementations. CRM on demand is a good choice for companies that want to implement standard processes that can use data structures “out of box” with little or not at all internal IT support and does not require complex or real-time integration with back office systems. However, on-demand CRM software is not always as simple as vendors want us to believe. Customizing can be problematic and interface tools of CRM vendors can not provide desired levels of integration. Implementing a hosted …

Employee shirking and overworking: modelling the unintended consequences of work organisation

2020

Underworking (i.e. shirking) and overworking of employees can have detrimental effects for the individual and the organisation. We develop a computational model to investigate how work structure, specifically the way in which managers distribute work tasks amongst employees, impacts work intensity and working time. The model draws on theories from economics, psychology and management, and on empirical observations. The simulations show that when managers correctly estimate task difficulty, but undervalue the employee’s competence, opportunities for shirking are provided due to longer deadlines. Similarly, if managers overvalue the employee’s competence, they set tighter deadlines leading to…

Management Challenges in the Context of a Complex View - SMEs Perspective

2015

Abstract The complexity significantly affects the functioning and development of enterprises and is important in understanding the activities of an organization. The perspective of complexity makes the decisions bringing with them a growing economic risk. One group particularly sensitive to the complexity in internal and external environment are small and medium-sized enterprises. Despite this increasing importance, most SMEs have not introduced or implemented yet a complexity management system/approach or they do not realize of the multitude of management challenges emerging with the phenomenon of complexity. The role of SMEs in each economy encourages to explore this area in order to deve…

User-oriented quality for OER: understanding teachers' views on re-use, quality, and trust

2011

We analysed how teachers as users of open educational resources (OER) repositories act in the re-use process and how they perceive quality. Based on a quantitative empirical study, we also surveyed which quality requirements users have and how they would contribute to the quality process. Trust in resources, organizations, and technologies seem to be of particular importance when looking at quality. In our findings, we derive recommendations for learning object repositories and OER user-oriented quality assurance.
