What happens at the lesson start?
2016
AbstractTransitional periods, such as lesson starts, are necessary steps from one activity to another, but they also compete with time for actual learning. The aim of the present study was to replicate a previous pilot study on lesson starts and explore possible disturbances. In total, 130 lesson starts in Finnish basic education in grades 1–9 were studied using systematic observation performed by 79 preservice teachers. The results corresponded with a previous pilot study indicating that lesson starts were generally orderly and teachers used effective means to manage events. However, lessons started 5 min late on average. Male teachers were evaluated to have better classroom order than fem…
COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF DATA PREPROCESSING SOFTWARE TOOLS TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND ACCURACY IN DIFFUSION KURTOSIS IMAGING
2016
Introduction: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is the most commonly used technique to extract microstructural features from a set of diffusionweighted images. In addition to the metrics obtained with DTI, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) can provide non-Gaussian diffusion measures by means of the kurtosis tensor. DKI has shown to be more sensitive to tissue microstructural changes in both normal and pathological neural tissue. In a clinical setting, however, these benefits are often nullified by numerous acquisition artifacts. The aim of this study was compare two preprocessing software for DTI apply to DKI. Also, the major preprocessing, processing and post-processing procedures applied to D…
El relato digital como herramiento pedagógica en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras a través del uso de la secuencia didáctica
2012
Digital storytelling constitutes a pedagogical tool for teachers to work on different linguistic skills while generating students’ interest and attention. This study analyses the usefulness of including digital storytelling within a didactic sequence in order to work on linguistic routines such as greetings and leave-takings in English as a foreign language. To this aim, we have worked with first year students in the Faculty of Education at the Universitat de València to improve their ability to adapt their language skills to specific situations within common daily interaction. We have designed a didactic sequence consisting of different workshops that have been put into practice in class. …
False-Positive LSD Drug Screening Induced by a Mucolytic Medication
1998
Since the early 1990s, the ingestion of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) as an inexpensive alternative to amphetamine derivatives has once again become widespread (1)(2). Consequently, screening of LSD has gained importance in clinical routine. The drug screening of a patient with a severe craniocerebral trauma showed a positive LSD screening by the homogeneous immunoassay CEDIA® DAU LSD (Boehringer Mannheim). In spite of the 3-h half-life of LSD in plasma (3), the drug screening remained positive for several days. These samples …
Epigenetic Biomarkers
2016
Our epigenome is characterized by its ability to dynamically respond to intra- and extracellular stimuli. These epigenetic changes are reversible and consequently are potential contributors to health and disease. Epigenetic biomarkers are emerging as tools for the screening and early detection of various diseases, for prognostic and treatment monitoring, and for predicting future risk of disease development. In clinical practice, this will contribute to the development of in vitro diagnostic and prognostic tools, which in turn may also lead to advances in personalized medicine. In this chapter we propose a definition for epigenetic biomarkers and describe different technologies used for the…
(18) F-labeled folic acid derivatives for imaging of the folate receptor via positron emission tomography.
2013
The folate receptor (FR) is already known as a proven target in diagnostics and therapy of cancer. Furthermore, the FR is involved in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The major advantage as a valuable target is its strongly limited expression in healthy tissues. Over the past two decades, several folic acid-based radiopharmaceuticals addressing the FR have been developed, and some of them show great potential for applications in clinical routine. However, most of these radiofolates were developed for single photon emission computed tomography imaging, and only a few can be used for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The development of suitable (18) F-labeled derivatives for PE…
Epigenetic biomarkers: Current strategies and future challenges for their use in the clinical laboratory
2017
Epigenetic modifications and regulators represent potential molecular elements which control relevant physiological and pathological features, thereby contributing to the natural history of human disease. These epigenetic modulators can be employed as disease biomarkers, since they show several advantages and provide information about gene function, thus explaining differences among patient endophenotypes. In addition, epigenetic biomarkers can incorporate information regarding the effects of the environment and lifestyle on health and disease, and monitor the effect of applied therapies. Technologies used to analyze these epigenetic biomarkers are constantly improving, becoming much easier…
SIeSTA: From Concept Board to Concept Desktop
2011
Recently published social protection and dependence reports reaffirm that the elderly, the disabled, or those in situations of dependency objectively benefit from continuing to live at home with the assistance from direct family. Currently in Spain - amongst the elderly, or people in a situation of dependency - 8 out of every 10 people stay at home. The end result is that the direct family relations have the responsibility of performing 76% of the tasks during the daily routine where aid is needed. Associations for people with disabilities, however, not only report a lack of adequate aid services, but a lack of direct-family assistance as well. It is necessary, therefore, for an "evolution"…
Veedors, marquejadors, maestros: el valor de la experiencia en la carpintería medieval. El ejemplo valenciano
2014
In the carpenter’s guild of Valencia in the Middle Ages, experience and skill were two notions captured in the more comprehensive idea of expertise. The appreciation of this added value made the expert an indispensable figure inside the guild. He was present in the different positions of control and inspection established by by-laws, which ensured the quality of goods manufactured, the proper level of teaching, and the accreditation of new masters. This figure also acted as an expert assessor, estimating the work of a colleague of even assessing the value of his interventions. In this article we examine the notion of expert in medieval carpentry and the infl uence of his practical applicati…
