Monitoring soil organic carbon variations in organic farming by proximal sensing

2014

It has been widely It has been widely recognized the crucial role of soil monitoring in assessing the effectiveness of the soil measures and agro-environment schemes passed by Regional and local administration in complying the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy to soil protection. The costs of soil monitoring however are substantial and the reliability of the results often questionable. A reason is that the monitoring activity commonly consists of a network of sampling points which are then spatialized through different inference models. This methodology does not often enable a reliable estimation at the fi eld scale, that is the scale where the measures are foreseen and fi nanced. The organic…

Finzioni gastronomiche e astuti ripieni: sarde a beccafico

2020

Searching for "beccafico" on the internet, the first occurrences that come up are sardines a beccafico, a delicacy that is widespread in Sicily and an undisputed icon of the island's cuisine. Riflessioni conclusive

2015

The rural sanctuary in the San Cataldo district, between the territories of Terrasini and Partinico, is mentioned by the written sources since the XII century, but the surviving architectural structures date back to the 16th century. The site, abandoned since the 1950s and now restored by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali of Palermo who carried out archaeological excavations in this area in 2000 and 2014, over the centuries has been an important aggregation pole in order to the cultural and religious identity of the rural communities in northwestern Sicily, in relation to the fertile hinterland through the Roma viability (via consolare Valeria) .

The power of fiction in times of crisis: movie-tourism and heritage planning in “Montalbano’s places”

2015

The current economic crisis, and its effects on the European sovereign debt, has resulted in asignificant reduction in Italian investments in the field of preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage and landscape. In fragile contexts, such as Sicily, the contraction of investments has put further into crisis the already weak management and planning system. Despite this scenario of crisis, in South-Eastern Sicily, the province of Ragusa shows a significant resilience to the crisis also due to the "effect Montalbano" and the capability to rethink the traditional heritage policies (Magazzino & Mantovani, 2012). The paper, based on the analysis of the case study of South-East Sicily, refl…

Arthrinium phaeospermum , Phoma cladoniicola and Ulocladium consortiale , New Olive Pathogens in Italy

2013

In recent years, leaf necrosis and twig dieback in the olive crop have been detected in Sicily (Italy). In this article, we identify the predominant fungal species associated with symptomatic leaves and twigs, using morphological features and DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, as Alternaria alternata, Arthrinium phaeospermum, Phoma cladoniicola and Ulocladium consortiale. The pathogenicity of these four species was tested on olive plants cv. Biancolilla. All species were pathogenic on leaves, but only U. consortiale produced cortical lesions on twigs, thus suggesting its main role in the Olea europaea twig dieback. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A…
