Sample pretreatment techniques for oligopeptide analysis from natural sources
2008
The analysis of oligopeptides in samples of food, tissues, and body fluids attracts considerable attention. The complexity of such samples requires efficient sample preparation (i.e., concentration and cleanup) procedures to remove interfering endogenous compounds and inorganic or organic salts. The methods of sample pretreatment that enable effective and selective isolation and/or preconcentration of oligopeptides from complex sample matrices have been reviewed. In each case, examples of application were presented and discussed, taking into account selectivity, enrichment, method automation, cleanup, and environmental aspects of the developed methods.
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
Biopsy vs. brushing: comparison of two sampling methods for the detection of HPV-DNA in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity
2012
Background: HR HPV infection was proposed as aetiological factor of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). HPV frequency in OSCC is highly variable, due to the discrepancy in oral sampling procedures, HPV testing methods and inclusion criteria regarding tumour site (strictly oral cavity vs. nearby structures). Our aim was to compare HPV DNA frequency and type-specific distribution in paired cytological and histological samples of SCC strictly located in oral cavity. The correlation between HPV detection rate by each method of sampling and demographical, behavioural and clinical-pathological variables was also examined. Patients and methods: HPV DNA was detected in brushed cells and formalin-…
Abstract P2-05-04: Gene expression associated with poor prognosis of young TNBC patients
2015
Abstract Background: Among TNBC patients those of very young age (<40 years) display a significantly worse prognosis (Liedtke et al. 2013 Breast Cancer Res Treat). We verified this result in 1161 TNBC samples with full Affymetrix gene expression data of which 845 patients had both detailed age and follow up information. Materials and Methods: We split the full sample set into a finding cohort of 394 TNBC and a validation cohort of 767 TNBC encompassing 309 and 536 samples, respectively, with both age and follow up data. We then used significance analysis of microarrays (SAM) in the finding cohort to look for genes whose expression is associated with young age (<40 years). Iden…
R-Score: A New Parameter to Assess the Quality of Variants’ Calls Assessed by NGS Using Liquid Biopsies
2021
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled a deeper knowledge of the molecular landscape in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), identifying a growing number of targetable molecular alterations in key genes. However, NGS profiling of liquid biopsies risk for false positive and false negative calls and parameters assessing the quality of NGS calls remains lacking. In this study, we have evaluated the positive percent agreement (PPA) between NGS and digital PCR calls when assessing EGFR mutation status using 85 plasma samples from 82 EGFR-positive NSCLC patients. According to our data, variant allele fraction (VAF) was significantly lower in discordant calls and the median of the absolute va…
The Role of Religiosity in Symptom Expression of Advanced Cancer Patients
2021
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the religious pattern and its impact on symptom expression in patients with advanced cancer. Methods: A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients screened at admission to palliative care. Standard epidemiological data were recorded. Patients were asked about their religious beliefs, the degree of social relationship to existing religions, the role of religion in their life, and the frequency of their prayer. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and Hospital Anxiety Depression scale (HADS) were assessed. Results: Two-hundred-eighty-three patients were screened. Age and gender were found to be independently correlated with religious belief…
Biomarker Analysis in Patients (pts) with Steroid-Refractory Acute Graft-Vs-Host Disease (aGVHD) Treated with Ruxolitinib (RUX) or Best Available The…
2020
BACKGROUND aGVHD, a common complication of allogeneic stem cell transplant (alloSCT), is driven by proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that activate the immune system, resulting in end-organ damage. Steroids are first-line treatment but up to 50% of pts are steroid refractory (SR), resulting in high mortality and morbidity. RUX, a JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor, inhibits cytokine-dependent activation of the JAK-STAT pathway and cell proliferation and differentiation, which prevents worsening of aGVHD and allows recovery. JAK pathway inhibition by RUX may also lead to modulation of proinflammatory cytokines and prognostic GVHD biomarkers. The phase 3 randomized REACH2 trial (NCT02913261) in SR aGV…
Circulating miR-99a-5p Expression in Plasma: A Potential Biomarker for Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
2020
MicroRNAs have emerged as new diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for breast cancer. Herein, we analysed miR-99a-5p expression levels in primary tumours and plasma of breast cancer patients to evaluate its usefulness as a minimally invasive diagnostic biomarker. MiR-99a-5p expression levels were determined by quantitative real-time PCR in three independent cohorts of patients: (I) Discovery cohort: breast cancer tissues (n = 103) and healthy breast tissues (n = 26)

2019
In a recent study our research group described a non-invasive sampling procedure based on [...]
Intraspecific Differences in Spectral Reflectance Curves as Indicators of Reduced Vitality in High-Arctic Plants
2017
Remote sensing is a suitable candidate for monitoring rapid changes in Polar regions, offering high-resolution spectral, spatial and radiometric data. This paper focuses on the spectral properties of dominant plant species acquired during the first week of August 2015. Twenty-eight plots were selected, which could easily be identified in the field as well as on RapidEye satellite imagery. Spectral measurements of individual species were acquired, and heavy metal contamination stress factors were measured contemporaneously. As a result, a unique spectral library of dominant plant species, heavy metal concentrations and damage ratios were achieved with an indication that species-specific chan…
