Multiplicity of ground states for the scalar curvature equation

2019

We study existence and multiplicity of radial ground states for the scalar curvature equation $$\begin{aligned} \Delta u+ K(|x|)\, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}=0, \quad x\in {{\mathbb {R}}}^n, \quad n>2, \end{aligned}$$when the function $$K:{{\mathbb {R}}}^+\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^+$$ is bounded above and below by two positive constants, i.e. $$0 0$$, it is decreasing in (0, 1) and increasing in $$(1,+\infty )$$. Chen and Lin (Commun Partial Differ Equ 24:785–799, 1999) had shown the existence of a large number of bubble tower solutions if K is a sufficiently small perturbation of a positive constant. Our main purpose is to improve such a result by considering a non-perturbative situation: we ar…

A search for neutral higgs particles in Z$^0$ decays

1992

Abstract The search in DELPHI data for neutral Higgs bosons is described. No candidate for the Standard Model Higgs is seen in Z0 decays to H 0 ν ν , H 0 μ + μ − or H0τ+τ− after selections that proved efficient for finding simulated H0. One remaining candidate for Z0 → H0e+e− is consistent with background. Together with our earlier studies, these results restrict the H0 mass to be above 38 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level. No signal is found for decays of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model neutral Higgs bosons to τ+τ−. Limits are obtained for their decays to produce four jets.

Search for massive colored scalars in four-jet final states in √s = 7 TeV proton–proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

2011

A search for pair-produced scalar particles decaying to a four-jet final state is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 34 pb[superscript −1] recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. No deviation from the Standard Model is observed. For a scalar mass of 100 GeV (190 GeV) the limit on the scalar gluon pair production cross section at 95% confidence level is 1 nb (0.28 nb). When these results are interpreted as mass limits, scalar-gluons (hyperpions) with masses of 100 to 185 GeV (100 to 155 GeV) are excluded at 95% confidence level with the exception of a mass window of width about 5 GeV (15 GeV) around 140 GeV.

Palatini $f(R)$ Black Holes in Nonlinear Electrodynamics

2011

The electrically charged Born-Infeld black holes in the Palatini formalism for $f(R)$ theories are analyzed. Specifically we study those supported by a theory $f(R)=R\pm R^2/R_P$, where $R_P$ is Planck's curvature. These black holes only differ from their General Relativity counterparts very close to the center, but may give rise to different geometrical structures in terms of inner horizons. The nature and strength of the central singularities are also significantly affected. In particular, for the model $f(R)=R - R^2/R_P$ the singularity is shifted to a finite radius, $r_+$, and the Kretschmann scalar diverges only as $1/(r-r_+)^{2}$.

Common fixed points for self mappings on compact metric spaces

2013

In this paper we obtain a result of existence of points of coincidence and of common fixed points for two self mappings on compact metric spaces satisfying a contractive condition of Suzuki type. We also present some examples to illustrate our results. Moreover, using the scalarization method of Du, we deduce a result of common fixed point in compact cone metric spaces.

Nonlinear scalar field equations with general nonlinearity

2018

Consider the nonlinear scalar field equation \begin{equation} \label{a1} -\Delta{u}= f(u)\quad\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N,\qquad u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{equation} where $N\geq3$ and $f$ satisfies the general Berestycki-Lions conditions. We are interested in the existence of positive ground states, of nonradial solutions and in the multiplicity of radial and nonradial solutions. Very recently Mederski [30] made a major advance in that direction through the development, in an abstract setting, of a new critical point theory for constrained functionals. In this paper we propose an alternative, more elementary approach, which permits to recover Mederski's results on the scalar field equation. T…

Bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue attained at an infinite family of Riemannian manifolds

1996

LetM be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary ∂M. We get bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem onM in terms of bounds of the sectional curvature ofM and the normal curvatures of ∂M. We discuss the equality, which is attained precisely on certain model spaces defined by J. H. Eschenburg. We also get analog results for Kahler manifolds. We show how the same technique gives comparison theorems for the quotient volume(P)/volume(M),M being a compact Riemannian or Kahler manifold andP being a compact real hypersurface ofM.

Relativistic quantum thermometry through a moving sensor

2023

Using a two-level moving probe, we address the temperature estimation of a static thermal bath modeled by a massless scalar field prepared in a thermal state. Different couplings of the probe to the field are discussed under various scenarios. We find that the thermometry is completely unaffected by the Lamb shift of the energy levels. We take into account the roles of probe velocity, its initial preparation, and environmental control parameters for achieving optimal temperature estimation. We show that a practical technique can be utilized to implement such a quantum thermometry. Finally, exploiting the thermal sensor moving at high velocity to probe temperature within a multiparameter-est…

Searches for scalar top and scalar bottom quarks at LEP2

1997

Searches for scalar top and bottom quarks have been performed with data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data sample consists of 21.7 pb^-1 taken at sqrt{s} = 161, 170, and 172~GeV and 5.7 pb^-1 taken at sqrt{s} = 130 and 136~GeV. No evidence for scalar top quarks or scalar bottom quarks was found in the channels stop --> c chi, stop --> b l snu, and sbottom --> b chi. For the channel stop --> c chi a limit of 67 GeV/c^2 has been set on the scalar top quark mass, independent of the mixing angle between the supersymmetric partners of the left and right-handed states of the top quark. This limit assumes a mass difference between the stop and the chi of at least 10 GeV/c…
