Shaded-mask filtering: novel strategy for improvement of resolution in radial-polarization scanning microscopy

Radially polarized illumination produces, in combination with annular pupil filtering, the sharpest focal spot. However, the enhanced sidelobes produce an effective deterioration of spatial resolution. This study shows that if one substitutes the annular filter by one, adequately designed, shaded-mask filter, the sidelobes' strength is strongly reduced, and an important, effective improvement of resolution is achieved.

Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a method to obtain information about the optical properties of a sample at a lateral resolution below the diffraction limit of far-field microscopy. In SNOM, a light source of a dimension which is small compared to the wavelength of light and which is held at a small distance from the sample is scanned across the surface of the sample. The modulation by the sample of the light emitted from the source is recorded as a signal. As a general rule one may say that the size of the source and the distance to the sample limit the resolution of SNOM. The use of cleaning instruments on titanium implants may cause undesired surface alterations. In a qualitative and quantitative assessment of these alterations, 5 titanium implant abutments were treated with a steel curet, a prototype pure titanium curet, an air abrasive polishing system, and an ultrasonic system. Custom-made polymer templates, used to secure the curet to a vertical guide bar and a spring scale to maintain a constant instrument pressure, guaranteed a standardized procedure and reproducible results. Ellipsoid-shaped superparamagnetic nanoclusters through emulsion electrospinning.

Ellipsoid-shaped nanoclusters composed of single superparamagnetic nanoparticles can be generated by emulsion electrospinning. Stretching and subsequent solvent evaporation of iron oxide loaded emulsion droplets during the emulsion electrospinning process enables the creation of such structures embedded in polymer nanofibers. Dissolution of the polymer fibers yields an aqueous dispersion of the inorganic clusters which are the first example of ellipsoid-shaped superparamagnetic nanoclusters with a high saturation magnetization (∼47 emu g(-1)).
Microtriches of tetraphyllidean metacestodes from Western Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba)

The tegumental structures of two types of tetraphyllidean plerocercoids and two types of merocercoids (Phyllobothrium delphini and Monorygma grimaldii) from Mediterranean striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, are described for the first time using scanning electron microscopy. The tegument of all of the specimens was fully covered with microtriches. An environmentally-stable low-repetition rate fiber oscillator is developed to produce narrow-bandwidth pulses with several tens of picoseconds duration. Based on this oscillator an alignment-free all-fiber laser for multi-photon microscopy is realized using in-fiber frequency conversion based on four-wave-mixing. Both pump and Stokes pulses for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy are readily available from one fiber end, intrinsically overlapped in space and time, which drastically simplifies the experimental handling for the user. Soluble derivatives of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) embedded in a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix forming thick, homogeneous and transparent nanocomposites, were prepared and characterized. A new photo-assisted method using microwaves, to purify the MWNTs from amorphous carbon and synthesis catalyst clusters, was tested in a sulphonitric mix. The "condition-specific competition hypothesis" proposes that coexistence of 2 species is possible when spatial or temporal variations in environmental conditions exist and each species responds differently to those conditions. The distribution of different species of feather mites on their hosts is known to be affected by intrinsic host factors such as structure of feathers and friction among feathers during flight, but there is also evidence that external factors such as humidity and temperature can affect mite distribution. Excitation and interrogation of whispering-gallery modes in optical microresonators using a single fused-tapered fiber tip

We show that whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in optical microresonators can be excited and detected using a fused-tapered fiber tip (FTFT). The fabrication of FTFTs is simple and inexpensive; they are robust and allow the excitation and interrogation of the resonances with a single fiber. Excitation of high-Q WGMs in silica microcylinders and microspheres is demonstrated.
